It's official: Singapore is home to one of the most beautiful outdoor cinemas in the world

Time Out6 days ago
We knew it, and now the world does too. Singapore has officially landed a spot on Time Out's list of the world's most beautiful outdoor cinemas – coming in hot at 11th place, thanks to the stunning Hendrick's Sunset Cinema. With its breezy beachfront setting at Tanjong Beach, pre-show live DJ show, coastal cuisine from nearby Tanjong Beach Club, immersive silent disco-style experience, and free-flow vibes, it's no surprise this alfresco film affair always sells out. Top spot went to Sydney's WestPac OpenAir – we'll happily concede to a cinema with front-row views of the Opera House and that unbeatable Aussie sunshine.
While this year's edition of Hendrick's Sunset Cinema has already wrapped, there's good news for cinephiles craving that under-the-stars kind of movie magic. The team behind the seaside screenings is bringing back its sister event: Films At The Fort, an open-air cinema experience set against the lush, green backdrop of Fort Canning Park.
The event runs from August 21 to September 7, with a nightly lineup of acclaimed films and cult classics. This year's buzz-worthy titles include The Life of Chuck, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, F1: The Movie, and all-time greats, including 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Shawshank Redemption.
Instead of deck chairs, you get space to spread out your picnic blanket and settle in under the trees. You can also rent backrests for maximum comfort. Food-wise, you're in for a treat as The Prince, Firangi Superstar and Neon Pigeon come together to curate a menu that includes sweet and savoury popcorn, juicy beef burgers, flavourful kebab dishes, ice cream sandwiches, and more.

BBC Death in Paradise's 'favourite' detective set to join spin-off as star drops clue

Death in Paradise favourite Kris Marshall has teased a stint in the show's Australian spin-off Kris Marshall, famed for his role in Death in Paradise, has expressed his willingness to make a cameo in the show's Aussie spin-off, Return to Paradise. Kris stepped into Ben Miller's shoes as the lead sleuth when Ben's character, Richard Poole, met his untimely demise. ‌ He portrayed Detective Humphrey Goodman until he left the series at the end of season six, choosing to chase his romance with Martha Lloyd (portrayed by Sally Bretton) back to London. ‌ Their romantic tale didn't end there; it carried on in the Death in Paradise spin-off, Beyond Paradise, where they relocated to Devon to be closer to Martha's mother. ‌ Despite being content with his current role in Beyond Paradise, Kris hasn't ruled out a potential appearance in Return to Paradise, which features its first female protagonist and has been greenlit for a second run. Anna Samson plays the lead as Mackenzie Clarke, the spin-off's inaugural female detective, reports the Express. ‌ Chatting with Woman's Day Magazine about the possibility of joining the Australian venture, Kris remarked, "In the future, I'm definitely not ruling it out, no." He teased: "Never say never." Should Kris join the cast, he wouldn't be the first Death in Paradise detective to cross over, as Ardal O'Hanlon graced the first series of the spin-off. ‌ Ardal returned as Detective Jack Mooney, taking on the role of Mackenzie's superior from London, and is rumoured to be making a comeback for the second series of the Aussie drama. The worlds of Death in Paradise and Beyond Paradise have intertwined previously. In the first series of Beyond Paradise, fans were treated to Humphrey Goodman's return to the Caribbean alongside Martha. ‌ Viewers were ecstatic to witness the inaugural meeting between Humphrey and Detective Neville Parker. While showrunners haven't confirmed another crossover, with production for Return to Paradise in full swing, the prospect of Humphrey Goodman making an appearance is tantalising. Kris Marshall's recent jaunt to Australia has sparked speculation among fans that he might pop up in Return to Paradise. ‌ A fan speculated on a Facebook fan page: "I wonder what Humph's doing here in Australia? Perhaps a Return to Paradise cameo." Another enthusiast responded: "That would be spectacularly awesome - DI Goodman in Return to Paradise - with DI Mooney - hope so!". A third chimed in: "Yes, my favourite detective, this needs to happen." For those eager to catch up, Death in Paradise is available for streaming on BBC iPlayer.

The best dive bar in London, according to bartending experts

Finding a good dive bar in London can be tricky. It has to be sufficiently dingy, a little bit grubby, and bar orders should ideally only be one syllable – we're talking beers, shots, and maybe crisps. London might have an abundance of pubs, ranging from the old-fashioned variety to sleek hipster haunts, but when it comes to a proper dive, choices can be limited. That's why Time Out asked seven different bar industry insiders – including Coral Anderson from cocktail bar Swift, Mr Lyan of the acclaimed Lyaness, and Carina Soto Velásquez, co-owner of what we've just named London's best bar, Equal Parts – to recommend their favourite dive bar in the city, so we could come up with the definitive answer to the question of London's best. According to the experts, the best dive bar in the city is Blondies in Clapton. The east London metal haunt has been open since 2015, and is famous for its packed-out gigs, as well as outrageously OTT Halloween decorations every October. 'Blondies is sweaty, chaotic, charming, very loud and just brilliant,' said Stephanie Randle-Solley from Exale Brewing, an independent brewery and taproom in Walthamstow. 'They have really great gigs, so make sure to check their listings,' she added, remembering a particularly raucous night when she saw Australian punk duo Mannequin Death Squad play in the tiny room. Randle-Solley recommended ordering the Blondies lager, the in-house beer that's made at the bar's Leytonstone taproom. Blondies Brewery was recently put under a licence review after noise complaints, and has been crowdfunding to save its future ever since. 'It's not particularly high ABV, it's an easy gig drink,' said Randle-Solley about the brew. Max Venning, co-founder of Three Sheets in Dalston and Soho also nominated Blondies as the best dive bar in London. 'It's a great grungey rock and roll dive,' he said, also pointing out the live music, or what he calls 'mad gigs'. Runners up included the legendary Oxford Street boozer Bradley's Spanish Bar, chosen by Missy Flynn and Gabriel Pryce from Rita's; the Americana-esque Rasputin's in Hackney, known for its £7 martinis and recommended by Coral Anderson; and The Victoria, a late-night pub and gig venue in Dalston, chosen by Mr Lyan. An honourable mention goes to Slim Jim's Liquor Store in Islington, also known for its gigs – Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong even put on an impromptu show there in 2023 – whiskies and 3am licence, which was also shouted out by Venning and Mr Lyan. The best bars in London for 2025.
