Dustin Poirier: Charles Oliveira should fight Ilia Topuria 'the same way he fought me'
Dustin Poirier has some insight on where Charles Oliveira fights best.
Oliveira (35-10 MMA, 23-10 UFC) takes on Ilia Topuria (16-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) for the vacant lightweight title in Saturday's UFC 317 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) main event at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Poirier (30-9 MMA, 22-8 UFC) was able to drop and hurt Oliveira in their title fight at UFC 269 in December 2021 but was ultimately submitted by a rear-naked choke in Round 3. Oliveira was dropped in his title fights against Poirier, Michael Chandler, and Justin Gaethje before rallying to finish them all.
However, Poirier points out a key difference between Oliveira's prior opponents and Topuria.
"Charles does get hit a lot," Poirier told MMA Junkie. "I got some people sh*tting on me on Twitter for saying I think Ilia is going to beat Charles, but that's just what I think. Charles does take a lot of shots, and Ilia is a guy who – we haven't seen it really, but he's confident in his jiu-jitsu. He's going to follow Charles down.
"When I hurt Charles, and it's rinse and repeat, a lot of guys have hurt Charles, but we try to make him get back up and touch him again. I think Ilia, if he does sit Charles down, he's going to follow him, get into his guard. We've seen Charles when guys go into his guard and play jiu-jitsu with him and aren't afraid of that, he starts breaking a little bit, I think. But we'll see which Charles shows up. It's a fun fight. It's a fun matchup."
Like Topuria, Poirier boasts heavy hands with his boxing. "The Diamond" thinks Oliveira needs to implement a similar strategy in the striking as he did against him.
"I think Charles needs to fight Ilia the same way he fought me," Poirier continued. "He was all the way in, or he was all the way out. He never really fought me at that boxing range. If he was in, it was clinch work, body locks, a lot of energy, but he smothered my boxing. Or he was at kicking range, using those long front kicks. He's a long, rangy guy. He needs to be all the way in or the all the way out. He cannot play the boxing, pocket game. He needs to be clinching. He doesn't need to be exchanging shots in the pocket with a shorter guy who can crack."
While Poirier is picking Topuria to win, he sees a way Oliveira can get the submission.
"I think Ilia does have good takedown defense, and Charles even being big, I was able to stop a lot of his shots against the fence and make him go back to the body lock," Poirier said. "He eventually got underneath me and got around to my back, and jumped on my back like a JanSport.
"So, if he can close the distance and get into that clinch work with Ilia, instead of boxing there or trying to dirty boxing, holding one tie, I think he needs to use that body lock, try to get behind him. If he can close the distance and get a hold of Ilia's body being the longer guy, maybe he can creep around to the back. I mean, Charles could finish anybody if he gets their back."

Rashad Evans: If you don't consider Jon Jones the GOAT, 'you're kind of a hater'
Rashad Evans will not let the Tom Aspinall saga define Jon Jones' legacy. Jones (28-1 MMA, 22-1 UFC) was chastised by many, including ex-foe Daniel Cormier, for his decision to retire and not fight Aspinall (15-3 MMA, 8-1 UFC) in a title-unification bout. Advertisement Evans' beef with former teammate Jones is well documented. The pair ended up fighting, with Jones scoring a definitive decision win to retain his light heavyweight title at UFC 145. Rivalry aside, Evans thinks former two-division UFC champion Jones has achieved too much in his career for people to ignore. "This newer generation of fight fans, they didn't get a chance to really enjoy Jon in his prime and get to see how magnificent he was inside of the cage," Evans told "MMA on Sirius XM." "He did some amazing things in there. The freedom in which he fought, the creativity in which he fought, the execution in which he fought, and the ability to go in there and fight the way he has, when his life is a dumpster fire on the outside. "So, they won't appreciate that, and unfortunately for Jon, it's a game of what have you done for me lately, and that's the most unfortunate part about it. But I think that, in time, once this moment passes and there's more perspective looked at on his career, I think he'll be held up to be as good, and his accomplishments will stand the test of time. Drug cheat, everything else – listen, he's the greatest. He's the greatest one to ever do it, and you have to be kind of hater to say he isn't." Many put an asterisk on Jones' greatness due to multiple failed drug tests. Former UFC light heavyweight champion Evans explained why he doesn't. "And there was a time when people got the exemptions to use testosterone replacement therapy, and there were some people who went over the level of that threshold that they were allowed to have, but it didn't make them what Jon Jones was. There's something different that Jon Jones brought to the table. "He brought a mental ability to go out there and compete in a way that allowed him to be free enough to take the risk that he needed to take that his opponents weren't willing to take. He had a great frame, a great build for what we do, and he's a smart fighter. So, I can't hate on that, and as much as it may pain me because we had the rivalry, but when I shoot it straight, I just got to give him his props." Final Mocks show Trey Johnson might be sliding before tonight's NBA Draft?
The 2025 NBA Draft tips off tonight with the first round and former Longhorns wing Tre Johnson is expected to go in the Top 10. How high can the green room invitee climb in the draft order? It depends on who you ask. The most optimistic landing spot for Johnson in the final Mock Drafts is the New York Post's prediction of the Charlotte Hornets at No. 4. "The Hornets are in desperate need of shooting after finishing 28th in 3-point percentage (33.9) this season, and Johnson could help improve upon that weakness immediately. As a freshman, he shot a robust 52.1 percent coming off screens and also hit 39.7 percent from distance on 6.8 attempts per game." -- New York Post Mock Draft Much of the discussion since the NBA Draft Lottery has forecast Johnson landing in Utah with the 5th pick. Bleacher Report's final Mock Draft still believes the Jazz will indeed pick the Texas Ex at No. 5. "Sources say the Utah Jazz have done significant homework on Tre Johnson, who's also a strong fit based on the team's current roster. His shotmaking has teams picturing a high floor and instant, translatable offense. The trouble some have with Johnson focuses on his shot selection and lack of passing, and whether they'll lead to inefficient stretches that negatively affect his value. Still, Johnson remains incredibly polished around the perimeter with his self-creation, shooting skills and touch shots. A more potent one-on-one game could give him an edge over Kon Knueppel, who'll also be in the best-player-available discussion." -- Bleacher Report Mock Draft A new mock draft from ESPN has Johnson falling all the way to at the Brooklyn Nets at No. 8. "Johnson has been viewed by many teams as having a somewhat narrow set of landing spots, between Picks 4 and 6, but there are realistic scenarios such as this one in which he slips out of that group." -- ESPN Mock Draft Trades and free agent signings can change a lot between the lottery and the draft. A new USA TODAY Sports Mock Draft has Johnson getting picked at No. 7 by the New Orleans Pelicans. "Johnson is a natural shooter and scorer. He does well when scoring on the move and is a decent playmaker for his size. He still needs to work on his ability to make plays for others. He must also work on his strength and his explosiveness in order to assert himself as a finisher at the rim. He had three 30-point games in the past two months, including 39 against Arkansas on Feb. 26. He had 23 points and six rebounds in an NCAA Tournament loss to Xavier." -- USA TODAY Sports Mock Draft CBS Sports latest Mock Draft agrees that Johnson will wind up in the Big Easy. "Johnson led freshmen in Division I last season in scoring and made more 3-pointers than any player in his class to boot. He's a bucket-getter who has opened eyes not just with his versatility as a scorer, but with his rounded skill set as a playmaker, too. He's in play as high as No. 3 but could go outside the top five, too. One determining factor may be which direction Utah, seen as a wild card, goes at No. 5." -- CBS Sports Mock Draft Yahoo Sports also has the 6-foot-6 guard falling to the Nets in the 8th spot. "Someone's gonna slip here. In this mock, it's Johnson, a clutch shot-maker who can hit from all over the floor, drilling step-backs and off-screen jumpers with ease. But he needs to continue developing his point-guard skills while also honing his shot selection and dramatically improving his defense. The Nets have five first-round picks, one-sixth of the entire first round. And though they're a potential trade-up team, league sources say they're comfortable using all five firsts and going with a young roster heading into next season." -- Yahoo Sports Mock Draft The latest Mock Draft from NBC Sports also has the former Longhorn falling to the Nets. "The Nets, who now control five first-round picks thanks to the reported three-team deal with Boston and Atlanta, will significantly impact how the draft plays out. How many will lead executive Sean Marks hold onto? And will Brooklyn look to use the draft capital to go 'big game hunting?' As for this pick, Johnson is one of the best scorers in this draft class, and he would be joining a Nets squad that finished this season ranked 28th in offensive rating and 29th in points per game." -- NBC Sports Mock Draft An add The Athletic thinks Johnson will be taken No. 7 by the Pelicans. "The Pelicans have several guards under contract, including C.J. McCollum and Dejounte Murray, but may not have any long-term answers there. Johnson would be a strong player to get into the mix, and it's hard to see him falling below this slot. He could go as high as No. 3 to Philadelphia. If the Pelicans are going to continue building around Zion Williamson, getting another monster shooter is a home run. Texas didn't utilize him enough this year as a movement shooter, but Johnson has elite potential in that respect. I watched him in a workout in April go at full speed for over an hour, consistently drilling shots with the same mechanics over and over again off complex actions and movements. The most underrated skill that movement shooters in the NBA need is stamina. They need to run forever, and Johnson can do that while also possessing real upside long-term to build his game.
