He subsequently withdrew from the Dutch Darts Championship and took a break from playing.
But he returned to the sport on Sunday at a Modus event in Waregem, Belgium.
Van Gerwen shared some footage of himself taking to the stage on social media and captioned the post with: "What a phenomenal atmosphere this evening."
However, the former world champion ditched his iconic green shirt for the occasion.
The 36-year-old has changed his trademark strip just once in the last 15 years - at the Winmau World Masters in January.
For a unique occasion, he agreed to wear a special black and gold jersey to celebrate spending five years with the tournament sponsors.
This time, however, Van Gerwen donned a black shirt with green stripes and a bright green logo on the back.
Fans were thrilled to see the Dutchman back in action, with some commenting messages of support on his latest social media post.
One person wrote: "Nice shirt! Great to see you back Michael."
Another commented: "Great to see you back."
While a third said: "Great to see you out and about MvG, hope you are doing well and looking forward to seeing you on tv soon."
Van Gerwen has not yet made a return to the PDC tour.
However, he is currently expected to appear at the US Darts Masters in New York this weekend.

August 10 - Taylor Ward had three hits, including a go-ahead two-run homer, and the visiting Los Angeles Angels defeated the Detroit Tigers 7-4 on Saturday. Ward scored two runs and knocked in three. Jo Adell hit a three-run homer and Luis Rengifo added a solo shot. Angels starter Yusei Kikuchi (6-7) gave up four runs, eight hits and two walks while striking out seven in five innings. Los Angeles closed out the game with four relievers each tossing an inning of scoreless relief. Kenley Jansen picked up his 21st save. Javier Baez had three hits and scored a run for the Tigers. Matt Vierling, Gleyber Torres, Andy Ibanez and Jake Rogers drove in a run apiece. Charlie Morton (7-10), making his second start since being acquired from Baltimore, surrendered six runs, seven hits and one walk while recording 10 strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. The Angels scored a run in the first on Mike Trout's two-out single and Ward's run-scoring double. Detroit took a 2-1 lead in the second. Wenceel Perez led off with a triple and Ibanez brought him home with a single. Baez had a one-out double to put runners in scoring position and Rogers knocked in Ibanez with a sacrifice fly. Los Angeles regained the lead in the fourth. Ward smacked a one-out single and Yoan Moncada was hit by a pitch. Adell then blasted a 400-foot homer to left. Detroit tied it in the bottom of the inning. Dillon Dingler and Baez hit back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. Dingler scored on Vierling's sacrifice fly. After Baez stole second, Torres brought him home with a double. The Angels took the lead once again in the fifth. Nolan Schanuel led off with a single and scored on Ward's one-out homer to left center, his 27th long ball of the season. The Tigers left two runners stranded in the sixth and another in the seventh. Rengifo gave his team some breathing room with his eighth-inning homer to right center. --Field Level Media

Report: Chargers signing OL David Sharpe after Rashawn Slater injury

August 9 - Just days after losing starting left tackle Rashawn Slater to a torn patellar tendon, the Los Angeles Chargers will reportedly sign offensive lineman David Sharpe. According to CBS Sports, Sharpe will bolster a depleted Chargers line after the team announced that Slater will miss the 2025 season. Originally a fourth-round pick of the then-Oakland Raiders in 2017, the Florida product last played an NFL game in 2023 while with the Carolina Panthers. Sharpe spent the 2024 season with the Houston Texans and New York Jets practice squads. After a year with the Raiders, Sharpe joined the Texans in 2018 before returning to Oakland the following year. Sharpe then bounced around to the then-Washington Football Team (2020), Baltimore Ravens (2021) and Carolina. Sharpe has played 45 games, including six starts, throughout his career. The serious injury to two-time Pro Bowl selection Slater occurred 11 days after he signed a four-year, $114 million deal to become the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history. --Field Level Media

Luke Littler lights up Wollongong with Australian Darts Masters victory

World champion Luke Littler demonstrated his phenomenal teenage talent in Wollongong by winning the star-studded Australian Darts Masters. A year after being humbled in the final of the biggest invitation event to be played in Australia, the 18-year-old this time made no mistake, winning all three of his matches convincingly on Saturday night to lift yet another big title. He also crushed Damon Heta's homecoming dream as he hammered Australia's top player, the world No 10, in the quarter-finals. After defeating Heta 6-3 in the last eight and Stephen Bunting 7-4 in the semis, Littler outplayed Belgian Mike de Decker to win the final 8-4. In 2024, Littler had lost in the showdown 8-1 to former world champ Gerwyn Price, so was determined to put on a show for his Australian fans on his second visit. 'It feels very good. It's another one I can tick off,' Littler said after winning a World Series event for the first time in six attempts this year. 'I played very well tonight. I didn't play so well last night in the first round but tonight is when it really matters. 'It's not gone to plan this year in the World Series but there are plenty of opportunities to win and I've finally picked one up,' added Littler, who's been in superlative form in other events, particularly with his victories in the Premier League and recent World Matchplay. Now he's after a trans-Tasman double when he moves on to the New Zealand Darts Masters. 'A few days off and then Auckland, I can't wait,' he said of next weekend's event. The frightening thing for his opponents is that Littler prevailed at the WIN Sports and Entertainments Centre without ever quite hitting his very best form. Perth ace Heta, who had held high hopes of toppling Littler after averaging nearly 110 in his first-round match on Friday, just couldn't hit those heights again, and the teenager made him pay by reeling off three straight legs from 3-3 to move into the semis, including a 104 checkout in the penultimate game. In the semis, there was some more magic from Littler as he pulled off the biggest finish of the tournament, a maximum 170 'big fish' checkout on the way to beating Bunting. In the final, Littler was always in control once he produced two fantastic legs, one featuring a 143 checkout and the next an 11-darter. It all left De Decker sighing with a rueful smile: 'He needs to retire because it's not fun any more.'
