
Global vaccine reserves helped avert 5.8 million infections, over 300,000 deaths since 2000: Study

since 2000, according to a new study.
The alliance, established in 2000, funds the roll-out and scale-up of new vaccines through routine healthcare systems and preventive campaigns.
The findings, published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) Global Health, highlight life-saving impacts and economic benefits of nearly USD 32 billion due to
outbreak response immunisation
programmes aimed at containing vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks.
"For diseases with routine vaccination programs, maintaining high levels of population immunity is vital for preventing large outbreaks," lead author Dominic Delport, a PhD candidate at Burnet Institute, an Australian-based medical research institute and NGO said.
"But when outbreaks do occur, a rapid vaccine response typically provides the greatest protective impact for the population at risk -- and the faster the response, the greater the impact," Delport said.
The researchers added that with routine vaccination declining and also impacted by cuts to the US' foreign aid, the study highlights the ongoing need for an insurance policy against major outbreaks of diseases like cholera, Ebola and measles.
The study analysed 210 outbreaks across 49 low- and middle-income countries that occurred between 2000-2023 for five diseases -- cholera, Ebola, measles, meningitis and yellow fever.
Globally, routine vaccine coverage has been shown to falter, with a recent study published in The Lancet journal attributing this to persistent inequalities, challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and a growth of vaccine misinformation and hesitancy -- factors which increase the risk of vaccine-preventable outbreaks, it said.
Low- and middle-income countries have been studied to bear the major brunt of these outbreaks.
Senior author Nick Scott, associate professor and head of modelling and biostatistics, Burnet Institute, said the global decline in routine vaccine coverage highlights the value of vaccine stockpiles as insurance against major outbreaks.
"Routine vaccine coverage is declining due to many factors including
vaccine hesitancy
and funding cuts for organisations like USAID and
Gavi
, and in many places gaps in coverage due to COVID-19 disruptions haven't been filled yet," Scott said.
"And as routine coverage declines, the prospect of more major outbreaks means there's a growing need for global vaccine stockpiles," the senior author said.
The authors wrote, "Across 210 outbreaks, ORI (outbreak response immunisation) programmes are estimated to have averted 5.81 million cases 327,000 deaths."
The team also looked at the impact of outbreak response immunisation programmes in helping control large outbreaks in low- and middle before they became overly disruptive.
Larger outbreaks are linked with worse health and economic outcomes, often requiring more disruptive public health measures that involve travel interruptions and school and business closures.
"We found here that the presence of the (outbreak response immunisation) consistently resulted in smaller outbreaks (eg, reducing the percentage of measles outbreaks with more than 100,000 cases from 41 per cent to eight per cent)," the authors wrote.
"(Outbreak response immunisation) programmes are critical for reducing the health and economic impacts of outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases," they wrote.

Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta on Monday announced that seven ongoing hospital projects in the Capital will be redeveloped as super specialty ICU Centres, each dedicated to treating specific critical illnesses. The move, she said, aims to transform Delhi into a premier medical hub 'where no patient leaves disappointed, and people from across the country and the world come for treatment.' The seven hospital projects—located in Kirari, Sultanpuri, Sarita Vihar, Shalimar Bagh, Raghubir Nagar, Geeta Colony, and Dilshad Garden—were initiated during the Covid-19 pandemic to expand the city's healthcare capacity. However, progress on most remains sluggish. Some are only around 50% complete, while others have made even less headway. Originally envisioned as high-capacity ICU or multi-specialty centres, the projects have faced delays due to funding gaps, bureaucratic hurdles, and planning issues. In light of the setbacks, the government is now exploring public-private partnership (PPP) models to expedite construction and operation. Gupta blamed 'poor planning and corruption in past governments' for the city's underdeveloped healthcare infrastructure. 'During the Covid-19 pandemic, the scarcity of hospital beds led to the loss of lives due to delayed treatment. At one point, Delhi had just 0.42 hospital beds per 1,000 residents,' she said. 'Across 38 government hospitals, there were only six MRI machines and 12 CT scan machines—an alarming shortfall for a city of this scale.' She also highlighted longstanding shortages of doctors, medicines, and equipment but said the BJP-led government is now actively working to modernise the system. 'People will soon witness major transformations in Delhi's medical landscape,' she added. The newly inaugurated private hospital, now empanelled under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, will enable even the most underprivileged patients to access quality treatment without financial burden. As part of its commitment to strengthening primary and secondary healthcare, the government has also designated 15 Aarogya Mandirs in each assembly constituency.

Influenza cases on the rise in Kerala; 19 deaths so far in 2025
KOCHI: With 19 deaths and 1,857 cases reported so far this year, the state is witnessing a surge in influenza virus infection. In the first nine days of July, the state reported 382 cases and six deaths. Influenza is a seasonal disease caused by environmental and other factors, with fever and body pain being the common symptoms. However, a high proportion of elderly population and youngsters with lifestyle diseases, cancer, and obesity poses a threat. According to Dr Rajeev Jayadevan, convenor of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) research cell, there are three strains of influenza viruses in circulation now. 'H1N1, H3N2 (both of which come in the Influenza A category), and Influenza B strains are circulating. Also, a vast majority of cases go undiagnosed as the symptoms are often indistinguishable from other common viral infections,' Dr Rajeev said. The reason why fever and flu-related mortality is on the rise is the prevalence of comorbidities, pointed out Dr B Ekbal, a public health expert. 'Among the elderly and youngsters, more people are suffering from lifestyle diseases including diabetes, hypertension, and even cancer. In Kerala, only 40% of the people control diabetes properly. Obesity is also a major factor,' Dr Ekbal said. The severity of the disease varies as per the patient profile. 'Those with comorbidities and among elderly, the condition can even cause death. If the host is weak, the impact will be greater,' Dr Rajeev said. Unlike Covid, influenza has effective treatment, and if symptoms are present, it is better to conduct a flu test, Dr Ekbal said. 'The number of people who undergo flu tests is low in the state. Antivirals, if taken within 48 hours, are effective too,' he said. An expert panel led by Dr Ekbal — entrusted with formulating a new immunisation policy in November 2023 — had proposed a mandatory administration of flu jabs to those aged 65 and above, but no action has been taken.
