Yankees' Aaron Boone Sends Trade Deadline Message Amid Calls for Change
The New York Yankees managed to avoid a sweep in their Subway Series against the New York Mets, but they've dropped 16 of their last 22 games and calls for significant change are growing.
As news surfaced that Aaron Boone reminded the team that it's still the best in the American League during the skid, several fans and analysts have urged the franchise to move on from their optimistic skipper. And while such a move seems very unlikely, the manager himself sent a message about a potential shakeup amid the Mets series.
"As trite as it sounds or as corny, these are moments that build character within a team and also help you find out and define what the heck you need moving forward and where do you need to change?" Boone said, per Mark W. Sanchez of the New York Post. "Or where do you need to go out and explore for things?"
The list of changes that the Yankees might explore with the trade deadline approaching is fairly long as their recent skid has exposed numerous weaknesses.

After a season-ending injury to Clarke Schmidt, the Yankees could be in need of another middle-rotation pitcher who is capable of starting a playoff game. And as Luke Weaver has struggled in his own return from injury, they'll almost certainly be looking to fortify the bullpen.
But perhaps the most difficult need to solve will be in the infield, where the team could use an upgrade over DJ LeMahieu at third base. Potential trade options include Eugenio Suarez of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Nolan Arenado of the St. Louis Cardinals, but it isn't clear if either of those players will be on the move as their teams hold out hope for playoff contention.
Ultimately, as Boone attempts to find silver linings to the team's recent struggles, the Yankees can move forward with the knowledge that there are several significant needs to fill.

Ben Rice homers, ties career high with 7 RBIs as Yankees beat Cardinals 12-8
Ben Rice homered and tied a career high with seven RBIs, Aaron Judge also went deep in his first multi-hit game since the All-Star break and the New York Yankees beat the St. Louis Cardinals 12-8 on Saturday night. Trent Grisham singled four times and scored four runs, and Ryan McMahon hit his first homer since being acquired by the Yankees to overcome a shaky start by Max Fried (13-5). Masyn Winn hit a three-run homer and Nolan Gorman had a two-run shot for St. Louis as Fried yielded multiple homers for the third time this season. Fried notched his 1,000th career strikeout when he fanned Alec Burleson immediately after Winn's second-inning homer, but he exited after yielding seven runs on eight hits in five-plus innings. Gorman's 389-foot blast ended his outing with no outs in the sixth. After two-out infield singles by Winn and Burleson in the ninth, David Bednar entered and induced Iván Herrera to foul out for his 20th save. Sonny Gray (11-6) allowed six runs on nine hits in five innings as St. Louis lost its fourth in a row. Rice had three of New York's 15 hits and finished a triple short of the cycle. In a matchup of aces, there was plenty of offense despite the Yankees playing without Giancarlo Stanton (lower body soreness) and Cody Bellinger (illness), while the Cardinals rested Brendan Donovan (left foot) and Willson Contreras (right foot) for a second straight game. Judge led off the third with his 39th home run, which bounced off the top of the wall and into the front row of the right-field bleachers. Judge, who has played his entire career with the Yankees, has now homered against every other major league team. He also had an RBI double in the first and drew two walks. Judge hadn't delivered multiple hits in a game since July 13 against the Cubs. After putting New York ahead with a three-run homer off Gray in the fourth, Rice added a three-run double off reliever Kyle Leahy in the sixth to extend the lead to 9-5. With a run-scoring single in the seventh, Rice matched his RBI total from July 6, 2024, when he homered three times in a 14-4 win over Boston. The Yankees go for the sweep Sunday, when they send RHP Will Warren (7-5, 4.34 ERA) up against St. Louis RHP Miles Mikolas (6-9, 4.97).

Astros Announce Jose Altuve News After Yankees Game
Astros Announce Jose Altuve News After Yankees Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Houston Astros kicked off a weekend series the New York Yankees with a 5–3 win on Friday. New York continues to try to shed a recent slump: It has lost six of its last 10 games. The Astros, on the other hand, are looking good at 65–51 atop the AL West. Although the entire team played well, one man stood out. José Altuve scored two runs, had two hits, drove in two and homered against the Yankees. The team named Altuve the player of the game after beginning the series on a high note. Carlos Correa delivered the tiebreaking RBI single in the 10th inning, and Taylor Trammell added a two-out homer off Devin Williams. Josh Hader closed the game for Houston. Starter Hunter Brown kept New York largely in check through five-plus innings, and Houston's bullpen preserved the extra-innings victory. Carlos Correa's Clear Message on Fans Jeering Jose Altuve Altuve heard it from the Yankees crowd throughout the game, but it seemed to have the opposite effect than what fans wanted. Carlos Correa, who the Astros reunited with at the MLB trade deadline, issued a warning on Altuve. "If I'm a fan, I would try to make it feel like a spring training game," Correa said, per Clutch Points. "After he yanked the fastball, I knew he was gonna go back to (the changeup). If he's gonna get beat, he's gonna get beat with his best pitch, and that's the changeup." The Yankees continue to look for ways to slow Altuve. Heading into Saturday's game, Altuve has a hit in six straight contests while adding four RBIs and two home runs during this story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 9, 2025, where it first appeared.

Yankees fans ready to remind Correa and Altuve about 2017 and old grudges
Yankees fans ready to remind Correa and Altuve about 2017 and old grudges originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Carlos Correa's return to the Astros was billed as one of baseball's feel-good stories of the summer. The former cornerstone, back in orange after a surprise deadline trade from Minnesota, is reunited not with the full 2017 core but really just with Jose Altuve, the other face of the 2017 championship that Yankees fans still believe came with an asterisk. Around baseball, the narrative leans on nostalgia. In the Bronx, there's none for the Astros. When Correa and the Astros made their first post-cheating scandal visit to Yankee Stadium, the Bronx erupted. He's also been back as a Twin. But walking into the Bronx this weekend alongside Altuve changes the math. Together, they are the two players most associated with the trash-can era: the shortstop who delivered October dagger hits and the second baseman whose every at-bat here still draws a chorus of boos. It's not hard to imagine what's coming this weekend. The first time Altuve steps in, the crowd will let loose. When Correa follows, the volume might actually rise. What matters here is memory. Yankee fans don't forget, and do not forgive, especially when the reminders are standing side by side in the other dugout. And with weekend crowds and plenty of beer money, that memory tends to get even louder. Adding fuel to it all, Saturday is Old-Timers' Day — another reminder to fans that the Yankees' road to their 28th championship may have been detoured by those 2017 Astros. Maybe that's the silver lining for New York. The Yankees have been flat in recent weeks, struggling to find an edge in a playoff race that's suddenly tighter than they'd like. If anything can jolt them, it might be the energy of an old feud. For the Astros, Correa's return is about chemistry and chasing another pennant. For Yankees fans, it's about payback — and a weekend soundtrack built for maximum volume. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 8, 2025, where it first appeared.
