'Clear mind' over doping case helped Sinner win Melbourne title

BBC News26-01-2025

Jannik Sinner says the possibility of a doping ban ruling him out of upcoming Grand Slam tournaments did not provide extra motivation to win the Australian Open. The 23-year-old Italian says he could not have won back-to-back Melbourne titles if he did not have a "clear mind" that he had done nothing wrong.Sinner was cleared of any wrongdoing by an independent panel after testing positive for banned substance clostebol in April. The World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) appealed against the decision and is seeking a ban of between one and two years. The world number one will have his case heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) from 16-17 April, just over a month before the French Open begins.Sinner beat German second seed Alexander Zverev in straight sets on Sunday but said the uncertainty around his future did "not really" drive him to win again at Melbourne Park."I keep playing like this because I have a clear mind on what happened," Sinner said."If I know if I would be guilty, I would not play like this, and that's it."I just came off an amazing run again here. I want to enjoy this moment."
Sinner twice tested positive for clostebol - a steroid that can be used to build muscle mass - during the Indian Wells tournament in March 2024.He did not dispute traces of clostebol were found in his urine test and successfully argued that he had been inadvertently contaminated with the substance by his physiotherapist. The ITIA accepted there was "no fault or negligence" attached to Sinner and he had provided a "credible" explanation.Wada is not questioning the player's explanation of why the substance ended up in his system, but believes the independent panel's finding that Sinner held no fault or negligence is "not correct under the applicable rules"."I still believe every time [the ruling] came out in a very positive way, and I still believe it's going to be that case," Sinner added."At the moment I'm not thinking about this. "Of course, you have your moments of certain days where you feel like I wish I would not have this problem. "In the other way, I'm always looking forward to go on court."

Liverpool handed chance to complete Wirtz swap transfer as new target emerges

Liverpool are pushing hard to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen and a door has now opened that could help to push through the move for the German playermaker Liverpool have been handed a prime chance to complete their record move for Florian Wirtz, with Bayer Leverkusen growing interested in one of the Reds' players. Wirtz has emerged as their top target for the summer window. The playmaker has starred over recent seasons, playing a key role as they won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double last year. But with only two years to run on his contract, Leverkusen are ready to sell. ‌ They are demanding a high price though, with Liverpool having failed with two bids so far. A deal does finally seem to be closing in though, with Leverkusen expected to be paid a package in the region of their asking price. ‌ The German side have already sold Jeremie Frimpong to Liverpool earlier this summer. While Wirtz appears to be on his way over to Anfield, Leverkusen are eyeing a move the other way. If Liverpool were to agree to sell the player Leverkusen are chasing, it could help to push through the move for Wirtz. But it would involve Liverpool U-turning on their current stance. According to Sky Sports Germany, Leverkusen are interested in signing Jarell Quansah. It is said that 'concrete talks' have begun between the two clubs, though an agreement has not yet been reached. While Leverkusen are exploring other options, Quansah is understood to be 'high on the list'. The 22-year-old has another four years to run on his current contract, with Liverpool currently not looking to sell him. The Reds could be tempted into letting him go, though it would take a bid in excess of £40m. Leverkusen's current transfer record is the £27.1m signing of Kerem Demirbay from Hoffenheim in 2019. ‌ Though he claimed a regular starting spot during the 2023/2024 season, the campaign just gone was much more difficult. He was subbed off at half-time of the opening game, going on to start just four more games in the Premier League. Boss Arne Slot insisted he is a fan of the defender, but admitted he still has work to do on his game. Slot said last month: "He has all the qualities and he is already shown that to me - but also to you - to play for this club. "But the biggest part of us winning the league is of course consistency and that is the most difficult part for a younger player to get that as well. Jarell is fast, strong and comfortable on the ball. He has every ingredient a centre-back for this club should have. ‌ "Now the last parts should be consistency in his performances. To play in this team you need to be really, really, really good and he is competitive to the other ones. But he was maybe a bit unlucky that the other ones stayed fit throughout the whole season. "They have so much consistency in their levels. Jarell has had consistency as well but one moment can change the perception of a game. One moment can also lead to us losing or winning a game of football."

Liverpool star believes Florian Wirtz arrival will force him out of Anfield

Liverpool have been busy in the summer transfer window and are desperate to bring Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz to Anfield next despite the club demanding £126m - and Luis Diaz believes the German's arrival will spell his end Liverpool star Luis Diaz is "convinced" Florian Wirtz's arrival at Anfield will spell the end for him, with the Colombian forward "determined" to join Barcelona this summer. Diaz joined Liverpool from FC Porto for around £37million in 2022 and he has largely been a success on Merseyside. He's netted 41 times in 148 appearances and arguably had the best campaign of his career last season by scoring 17 goals in all competitions as Liverpool won the Premier League. ‌ But the 28-year-old is about to enter the final two years of his contract with the Reds and there have been fears he could leave in the near future, with Barcelona strongly linked with bringing him to the Nou Camp. ‌ It comes as Liverpool continue negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen over playmaker Wirtz, with the German side wanting £126m for their star player. The Reds have already had a number of bids turned down - including one totalling £114m - but are hopeful of wrapping up a deal soon for a talent they believe could transform the club and be part of their midfield for years to come. And according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Diaz believes Wirtz's signing will lead to his own exit. It goes on to say that Diaz is "only thinking about playing for Barcelona next season" and wants to capitalise on the La Liga side's interest. Diaz also "does not feel appreciated by Liverpool" and believes he might not have many chances to seal a transfer to a team he supported as a child. ‌ Liverpool boss Arne Slot will be keen to keep Diaz and play him alongside Wirtz after starting the Colombian 28 times in the Premier League last season. The Premier League champions have already made two signings after snapping up Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen for around £30m, while keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili has joined from Valencia for £25m. Trent Alexander-Arnold has left for Real Madrid, meanwhile, while Caoimhin Kelleher has left for Brentford in a £12m deal - and now Liverpool chiefs will be keen to ramp things up in their pursuit of Wirtz. Liverpool remain confident of getting the deal over the line but they might have to break the bank to seal Wirtz's signature. It could lead to financial complexities and potentially even swap deals, with Leverkusen reportedly keen on the likes of Curtis Jones and Jarell Quansah.

Rory McIlroy's amazing body transformation after injury scare threatened career

Rory McIlroy, who is aiming to get back on track at the US Open at Oakmont, has worked incredibly hard off the course to become one of the most powerful players in the golfing world Rory McIlroy may be grappling with precision at the moment, but he will never be short of power as he gears up for the US Open. The now five-time major champion has seen a dip since his monumental Masters victory in April, where he finally donned the green jacket and completed golf's Grand Slam. McIlroy barely made the cut at the subsequent major, the US PGA Championship, and then didn't make it to the weekend at the recent Canadian Open. ‌ The world No.2 has had trouble off the tee since his reliable driver failed a standard legality test on the eve of the US PGA Championship. However, once he gets his bearings with his new driver, it is surely only a matter of time before he is back in contention, possibly even at Oakmont this week. ‌ McIlroy continues to be one of the biggest drivers on the PGA Tour. Last year, his average drive was a whopping 320.2 yards, with only Cameron Champ (322.8 yards) outdoing him. The 36-year-old's distance off the tee is no fluke. It's the result of thousands of hours in the gym, which transformed him from a skinny-looking youngster to a muscular physical specimen... Rory McIlroy's gym routine Over the years, McIlroy has packed on pure muscle by hitting the gym for 90 minutes a day, five days a week. He has boosted his swing speed by strengthening his shoulders with exercises like landmine presses, which involve lifting one end of a barbell. He also performs box jumps and flips 120lbs bags as part of his routines. His physical transformation was so remarkable that in 2015, he became the first golfer to grace the cover of Men's Health magazine. Over the years, McIlroy has shared clips of his gym workouts. In a 2017 tribute to Gary Player, a pioneer in golf fitness, he posted on Instagram: "At the end of my gym session I remembered it was Gary Player's 82nd birthday today. What better way to honour the legend and pioneer of fitness for golf than doing a plank. Hopefully everyone can join me today and #PLANK4PLAYER to honour the great man!" Rory McIlroy's injury scare McIlroy was prompted to hit the gym after suffering a back injury in 2010, the year before he won his first major, the US Open at Bethesda. He took a month off and began working with fitness expert Dr Stephen McGregor, who had previously worked with Manchester City and the New York Knicks NBA team. ‌ Speaking about the scare, he said: "The doctor said to me, Look, if you don't start taking care of yourself or getting stronger, you can seriously jeopardise how long your career is. That was a wake-up call for me." Five years later, he reflected on his progress, revealing in a promotional workout video for Nike: "I wasn't really big into going to the gym and I couldn't stand on one leg for more than 10 seconds. I couldn't hold a plank for more than 30 seconds. ‌ "Everyone has to start somewhere. I started at the very beginning, and I've worked my way up. Getting my body into the best shape for what I do, which is ultimately to go out and play golf." He reportedly slashed his body fat from 24 per cent down to a lean 10 per cent over five years and is said to have packed on 20lbs of muscle between 2005 and 2010. What does Rory McIlroy eat? It's not just about hitting the gym hard for McIlroy, who credits his diet with playing a pivotal role in enhancing his power behind the swing. In pursuit of this goal, he has significantly increased his protein consumption, as he shared with in 2023: "I'd eat a gram of protein per pound of body weight. I still do that, 170 grams per day of protein." ‌ However, McIlroy made some sacrifices too, cutting out certain foods, like eggs and pork, while adopting a gluten-free lifestyle. He elaborated on this choice, saying: "It just doesn't agree with my body. Those are more of a personal thing that's unique to my body." Moreover, he curbed his indulgence in two beloved snacks, chocolate and ice cream, which are now rare treats for him. However, he said: "I don't think you want to demonise food. "It's about being able to fit it into your diet so you can have it every once in a while and feel good about it and not feel guilty. There's so much guilt associated with eating. If you can break that mental barrier, you'll be better off."
