Visitors to the Venice Biennale will get to taste coffee made with canal water this spring
Ever strolled along the Thames and thought that lovely brown water would make a solid flat white? Or sipped a café au lait and pondered whether it lacked the Seine flavour? No, neither have we.
But it's time to open your minds, folks, as this year at the Venice Biennale, coffee aficionados will have the chance to sample espresso made with water straight from the city's canals.
Yes, you read that right. As reported by the New York Times, an offbeat project at this year's Architecture Biennale will invite visitors to literally get a flavour of Venice in the form of a coffee made with water straight from the lagoon.
But don't fret – espresso cups aren't being dunked into the canals willy-nilly. Instead, the Canal Café, a project by New York-based design studio Diller Scofidio + Renfro, will be utilising some pretty swanky-sounding tech to purify canal water before our very eyes.
The project was first thought up in 2008, but it's taken until 2025 for it to actually materialise thanks to the development of more advanced filtration systems.
So, how will it work exactly? Well, the café will be installed outside and water will be drawn directly from the Arsenale Lagoon through clear pipes and split into two streams: one will be treated through reverse osmosis and ultraviolet disinfection, the other biologically through a 'micro-wetland' of salt-tolerant plants. Sciency, right?
After that, the two streams of water will re-join each other and – get this – Michelin-starred chef Davide Oldani will sample the combination and alter it to produce a distinct local flavour, as well as selecting the coffee blend to 'deliver the most authentically Venetian taste'.
The project is 'about combining the sort of pleasure of drinking beautiful espresso while also thinking about the complexity that it takes to actually have potable water,' said Elizabeth Diller, co-founder of the studio. 'I will drink the first cup of espresso, and I will be the guinea pig.'
The Canal Café can be found at the back of Arsenale, Venice's former shipyard and one of the Biennale's main sites.
Venice and climate change
Due to rising sea levels, Venice's MOSE system, which was installed to protect the city from storm surges, will likely become obsolete in years to come, and some scientists predict that Venice itself will be entirely underwater by 2150.
Carlo Ratti, director of the 2025 Biennale, said that Venice won't just be facing the challenge of too much water, but will also have to grapple with ensuring there is enough clean, drinkable water.
'We could say that the project is a prototype of the global dilemmas we face in a time of increased climate change when our infrastructures must adapt,' he said.

The BRIT Awards will be moving away from London for the first time in the ceremony's 46-year history. MailOnline can reveal the annual showpiece, regarded as the biggest night in British music, will be held in Manchester next year and is likely to move around the UK in different locations for the foreseeable future. The change will be officially framed around the desire to reach new audiences in other regions, while also banishing its 'London-centric' reputation. But music insiders have told MailOnline 'cost-cutting' is also a major factor, as 'everything is more expensive in the capital.' The BRITs, which has provided iconic moments in music history including Spice Girl Geri Horner 's Union Jack dress and Madonna 's infamous 2015 stage fall, has been held at London's O2 Arena since 2011. Past venues include Earl's Court, the London Arena, Alexandra Palace, Hammersmith Apollo, the Dominion Theatre, the Royal Albert Hall, the Grosvenor Hotel and its original location, Wembley Conference Centre. But the move away from the capital signals another new era in the ceremony's history, arguably the most seismic. A source told MailOnline: 'It's officially the end of an era. The BRIT Awards has been hosted in London since the ceremony first took place in 1977 and now for the first time ever, it will be held outside of the capital. 'Obviously, it's going to come as sad news to artists and talent who are London-based but there's a feeling within the music industry that these shows don't always need to be held at the same venues, year after year. 'The BRITs is the biggest night in the British music calendar and now it will be shared with a new audience, as fans from Manchester and the surrounding areas are more likely to attend. 'In recent years, there has been a general appetite for the ceremony to move, as with the The Mercury Prize and The MOBO Awards and now for the first time the music scene won't be as London-centric, both for the nominees and fans.' Manchester's new Co-op Live indoor arena is the likely destination of the first non-London ceremony, which will no doubt spark rumours Oasis, newly reformed ahead of their highly-publicised comeback, could mark the move to their native city with a live performance. According to insiders, bosses hope relocating the awards outside of London may free up more cash to spend on A-list artists to play at the ceremony. However, there are concerns many London-based acts and record company execs may turn their noses up, due to many of the big labels being based down south. An insider said: 'It's very gutting for artists who are in London, travelling to Manchester will triple the costs for people having to pay for travel and accommodation, which will no doubt go up in price. 'There's also the fear that record labels such as Sony Music, Warner, and Universal will be less inclined to host glamorous afterparties for the nominees and winners, and that the ceremony as a whole could potentially be poorly attended. 'It's not what anyone wants to hear and from many people's perspective it's purely to cut costs when London is the rightful home of the BRITs.' The BRIT Awards is not only famous for its superstar performers, glamorous guests and famous hosts, it's also provided outrageous moments watched by millions at home. Madonna's stage fall, in which the iconic singer was accidentally pulled down some stairs by a backing dancer grabbing onto her cloak, is just one of many unpredictable incidents which became synonymous with the BRITs. Chumbawabe pouring a bucket of ice water over then deputy Prime Minister John Prescott at the 1998 was a stand out moment, as was DJ Brandon Block confronting Rolling Stones legend Ronnie Wood on stage in 2000, who promptly threw a drink over him and summoned football hard man Vinnie Jones over to confront the intruder. Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker 'mooning' Michael Jackson's performance of Earth song in 1996 sparked huge controversy, as did Adele giving the middle finger after host James Corden cut her off mid-speech to end the show back in 2012. Notable presenters, aside from Corden, down the years have included Jack Whitehall, Chris Evans, Ben Elton, Kylie Minogue and Peter Kay, who famously branded Liam Gallagher a 'knobhead' for throwing his award into the crowd. But the most notorious were arguably the worst, the iconic 1989 pairing of Page 3 legend Samantha Fox and Mick Fleetwood whose stint as hosts was marred with technical issues so bad the show was televised twice, the second time with the shambolic errors edited out.

Gogglebox family announce heartbreaking death as fans pay tribute
Gogglebox star Tom Malone Jr and his family have announced the death of their beloved pet dog, Bob the Rottweiler. The Manchester-based Malone family have been regularly joined by their dogs during a decade-long tenure on the Channel 4 programme. Joining the show in 2014, the family unit originally consisted of dad Tom, mum Julie and siblings Tom Jr and Shaun, plus a rotating cast of Rottweilers which included Lucy, Dave, Izzy, Joe and Bob. Sadly, Lucy died in 2022, and Dave in 2023. The Malones have now revealed that they were forced to bid farewell to Bob this weekend, with former Goggleboxer Tom Jr taking to social media to share the sad news. Tom Jr left the programme in 2021 to pursue new career opportunities, including freelance modelling and street dance choreography. As he and his family shared the news, fans were full of love and support for the grieving Malones. 'Good boy Bob….Rest easy big man 🐾 🕊️' wrote Tom Jr as he shared a series of pictures and videos of himself with the beloved pooch. Jared Leto denies allegations of sexual misconduct from nine women
Jared Leto is facing allegations of sexual misconduct from several women, including some who were teens at the time. The Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman has been accused of inappropriate behaviour by nine women over a period of two decades. These claims involve alleged victims who say they were teenagers when the incidents occurred. According to an exposé published by Air Mail, the matter has 'been an open secret for a long time.' Representatives for the 53-year-old House of Gucci star have denied all the accusations to the publication. The claims against Leto resurfaced after a Los Angeles-based DJ, Allie Teilz, re-shared a post on Facebook from 2012 to her Instagram Story. In it, the 30-year-old alleged she was assaulted by the star when she was 17. She alleges that Leto 'knew' how old she was but 'didn't care'. 'You're not really in LA until Jared Leto tries to force himself on you backstage… in a kilt… And a snow hat,' she wrote. 'I was assaulted and traumatized by this creep when I was 17.' Teilz also described Leto's actions as 'predatory, terrifying and unacceptable.' An unnamed alleged second victim also told Air Mail that she was 16 when Leto briefly spoke with her at Urth Caffé in LA. Taking place in 2006, she alleges he got her phone number and called her days later. During the call, she says he sounded 'weird'. 'I don't know if he was on drugs or what… it was the weirdest, grossest voice… [but] for me, it's Jared, you know?' Claiming they would speak on the phone late at night, she says their conversations became 'sexual', with Leto asking if she'd 'ever had a boyfriend' and questions such as, 'Have you ever sucked a d**k?' A third accuser, Laura La Rue, 33, says she met Leto in 2008 at an animal rights event. At the time, he was 36 and she was 16. She says Leto asked what her age was, to which she responded. Despite knowing she was 16, she claims Leto still asked for her phone number, later inviting her over to his home in LA. There, he allegedly 'flirted' with and 'teased' her the 'whole time'. The model also claims that Leto was fully naked at one point and walked into the room as if it were 'normal'. 'I thought maybe this was just what adult men do.' A fourth woman, also anonymous, has said Leto approached her at an 18+ club when she was 20, where his assistant asked for her number. She said they 'hook[ed] up a little' at the nightclub and she visited his home several times afterwards. Echoing the second victim's descriptions, she also said Leto was 'weird'. 'I know some people are kinky, and that's fine,' she reasoned, but said 'his kind of kink … just didn't feel right.' Furthermore, a fifth alleged victim has said she and Leto exchanged flirtatious messages while she was underage. She allegedly also visited his home, where he would ask her questions of a sexual nature, including, 'Do any of the little boys you hang out with f**k you?' After she turned 18, their relationship was allegedly taken to another level. At one point, Leto is said to have 'pulled his penis out and started masturbating'. She says he put her hand on his penis and told her: 'I want you to spit on it.' In the original Air Mail piece, it is claimed that Leto was 'known' for taking an interest in younger women. One woman told the outlet: 'I remember being so physically ill to the point of throwing up when I passed billboards … for his films, and just wondering how everybody in LA knows.' A rep for Leto said to Air Mail: 'Their (the women's) communications contain nothing sexual or inappropriate and Ms. La Rue later applied to work as Mr. Leto's personal assistant, further underscoring the absence of anything inappropriate in any of their interactions.' La Rue denies ever applying to be Leto's PA. The actor's publicist also defends that he 'has not had a drink or used drugs in over 35 years', following claims that he hosted parties at his mansion attended by approximately 60 'very young women to four or five men'. It's claimed guests were encouraged to go skinny dipping at the events. Leto, now an Academy Award and Golden Globe winner, first achieved recognition in 1994 for his role as Jordan Catalano in the teen drama television series My So-Called Life. He went on to have supporting roles in Fight Club (1999), Girl, Interrupted (1999), and American Psycho (2000), before turning his focus to music.
