Guwahati: With the NDA sweeping the Assam panchayat polls, winning 300 zilla parishads and 1,436 anchalik panchayats, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa is targeting to win around 104 of the 126 assembly seats in next year's assembly polls.Polling took place in two phases -- on May 2 and May 7 -- across 27 districts of Assam, the first such elections held after the delimitation of constituencies."The Assam panchayat polls results point to a clear pro-incumbency wave in Assam. Compared to 2018, we've seen a broad increase in seat and vote share by over 26%. These results come a year ahead of the 2026 polls and a year after an exceptional performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls," Sarma said.Of the 397 zilla parishads, NDA secured 300, BJP won 274 while Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) won the rest."Out of 2,192 anchalik panchayats, NDA won 1,436, BJP won 1,265 and 171 was won by AGP. Congress won in 72 zilla parishads."He said 76.27% of the zilla parishad seats were with the NDA. Sarma highlighted that the party achieved nearly full dominance in several districts, including in Dibrugarh, Dhemaji, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, Golaghat, Jorhat, and more. "We have won 100% of the ZP seats in multiple districts. Even in places where we didn't win all the seats, we received substantial support," he said. The ruling BJP's strength in the 126-member Assam Assembly stands at 64, while its allies AGP has nine MLAs and the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) has seven.Sarma said BJP won even in the Muslim-dominated seats. "Throughout Assam, the Congress could not win a single seat dominated by Hindus. We are doing very well in areas which were traditionally not ours.""We will do a panchayat conference in Guwahati. We will invite party president JP Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah ," he said.Sarma said, "We will contest 105 seats in next year's assembly polls. Among the indigenous Muslims, our vote percentage has gone up to 60-70%."Amit Shah stated on X, "Gratitude to the people of Assam for granting the NDA a historic victory in panchayat election 2025. This victory is an endorsement of PM @narendramodi ji's people-centric policies that have brought about a new era of peace and prosperity in Assam. My heartfelt congratulations to CM @himantabiswaJi, Assam BJP President @DilipSaikia4Bjp ji, and the @BJP4Assam Karyakartas for their dedicated efforts to carry Modi ji's message of development door to door. Together, we will build a developed Assam for all."

'Muslim countries have 644 times amount of land controlled by Israel': US ambassador Huckabee on two-state solution; slams allies UK, Australia
US ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee (Image: X) US ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee suggested "Muslim countries" should give up some of their land to create a future Palestinian state. Speaking to the BBC, Huckabee said Muslim countries have 644 times more land than Israel. "So maybe, if there is such a desire for the Palestinian state, there would be someone who would say, we'd like to host it,' he said. Huckabee further called the idea of a two-state solution, where Israel and a future Palestinian state would exist side by side, 'an aspirational goal.' This idea is widely supported internationally, including by past US governments. The plan imagines a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza, with East Jerusalem as its capital. But in a different interview with Bloomberg, Huckabee said the US was no longer working toward creating an independent Palestinian state. Afterward, state department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said that Huckabee was speaking for himself, and that the president sets US policy in the Middle East. When asked if the US now opposes a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Huckabee said,: "I wouldn't say there can never be, what I would say is that a culture would have to change.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Milana, 38, Shows Her Huge Size In New Photos. Paperela Undo "Right now the culture is that it's OK to target Jews and kill them and you're rewarded for it. That has to change.' Israel itself rejects the two-state solution. It says any final agreement must come through talks with Palestinians, and that statehood cannot be a precondition. Huckabee has long supported the idea of a 'greater Israel,' meaning permanent Israeli control of the occupied Palestinian territories. He uses the biblical term 'Judea and Samaria' to refer to the West Bank. The ambassador also strongly criticised US allies, including the UK and Australia, for placing sanctions on two far-right Israeli ministers. The sanctions were issued over the ministers' "repeated incitements of violence against Palestinian communities" in the occupied West Bank. He said, 'I have not yet heard a good reason for why these two elected ministers have been sanctioned by countries that ought to respect the country's sovereignty and recognise that they have not conducted any criminal activity.' The war in Gaza started in October 2023, after Hamas attacked Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking about 251 hostages. There are still 56 hostages being held in Gaza, and at least 20 are believed to be alive. Since the war began, at least 54,927 Palestinians have been killed, according to Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry. The UN says more than a quarter of those killed were children.

Development does not come in long speeches, big ads: BJD chief Naveen on one year of BJP rule
BHUBANESWAR: Ahead of the BJP government's first anniversary celebration in the state, leader of Opposition and BJD president Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday came down heavily on the former, accusing it of failing on all fronts. Launching the Jana Jagaran Abhijan (people's awareness campaign) at the Sankha Bhawan here, the BJD president alleged the BJP government has confined itself only to long speeches and big advertisements during the last one year. 'The BJP government has completed one year in office. They claim to be the government of the people, but who are these people? Development does not come through long speeches and big advertisements,' he said. Stating that the healthcare system has completely collapsed during the BJP rule, the former chief minister said during his tenure, 90 per cent of Odisha's population benefitted from Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana. 'The Ayushman Bharat Yojana has been launched in the state but people are not getting medicines and unable to get free treatment in hospitals,' he said. The healthcare system has turned into a mess. Out of the 30 districts, the post of chief district medical officer (CDMO) is vacant in 19 and this is said to be the success of the current government, he pointed out.

Real development not possible under Modi: TPCC chief Mahesh Kumar Goud
HYDERABAD: TPCC chief B Mahesh Kumar Goud on Tuesday said that BJP was trying to impose Manusmriti by replacing the Constitution of India. Speaking during the 'Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan' rally at Shadnagar, he alleged that as part of this plan, Union Home Minister Amit Shah was insulting Dr BR Ambedkar in Parliament. 'Why do we have to hit roads carrying the copies of the Constitution, which is as sacred as the Bhagavad Gita, Quran and Bible? It's because the BJP is dividing people for its political gains. We need to protect the Constitution for our safety and well-being,' he said. Goud also said that real development is not possible under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Targeting both Modi and Shah, he said: 'They are speaking with an aim to divide people. The Home Minister is supposed to integrate this country but he is disintegrating it in the name of caste and creed.'
