New book documents Bristol's music and youth culture from the 80s

BBC News13 hours ago

A photographer who has documented a city's street music and youth culture since the 1980s is publishing a double picture album of his work.Beezer, real name Andy Beese, 60, from Bristol, worked with the likes of Pulp, Paul Weller and Vivienne Westwood and is highlighting some of his most poignant images from his archive. At 16 he was given a camera while studying audio visual at Brunel College and said it became "a continuation of my teenage years".The double album Until Now is being released on the 7 July through Bristol publisher PC Press.
Beezer previously published a book called the Wild Days which included scenes from Bristol and Glastonbury. He said he was "very young" when he started taking photos in 1982, but it was an amazing time."There was music going on every night of the week and I always went out with my camera," he said."I was heavily into reggae and sound systems and it was so good to be able to go out and photograph the things that you enjoyed.'However, he said there was a "really dire, really dank atmosphere at the time', and "everyone was skint"."It was Margaret Thatcher, everyone was moaning and we had less but looking back on it now it felt like we had more at the time," he said.
The double album includes pictures of St Paul's Carnival and Glastonbury Festival, and artists Mark Stewart, The Wild Bunch and Massive Attack."So a wide variety of people in gigs, [and] there's a huge social documentary section on different things going on in the city or protests," he said."It was very raw what I was shooting but it was anything going on."An average day [could be] photographing the manager of Bristol Rovers doing a Sikh protest on Nelson street then photographing a gig or an event in the evening."But words like 'youth culture' didn't exist then and the kind of stuff I shot, there were very few outlets for it because it just wasn't popular – especially on the music front."He said popular bands at the time were Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Simply Red, so "more sculpted bands".
He said his main focus when he went anywhere with his camera was trying to get that "one Glastonbury shot that covers the weekend, that sums it all up… it was totally unrehearsed".And for anyone interested in photography, he said "use it as a tool'. "If there's something you're interested in and you're not confident, it could be dancing or anything like that, a camera's a good way to get up close and personal with it and see where you could fit in with it," he said.He said he is "so proud with this double book. So many people [in my archive] have passed and it's really sad. People aren't around forever, but images are".

Helen Flanagan strips down to blue lingerie as she opens up about cellulite and losing confidence in her body

Helen Flanagan stripped down to her underwear as she opened up about losing confidence in her looks in a new Instagram video on Friday. The Coronation Street star, 34, has become known for showing off her enviable physique in lingerie shoots over the years. But as she got ready for a night at the theatre, Helen revealed she's lost confidence in her figure in recent months after noticing 'cellulite'. Filming a 'get ready with me' for her fans, the stunner initially sported a pink set of pyjamas before stripping down to a sky blue lingerie set. 'My weight goes up and down,' she explained. 'It depends on my love life and how stressed I am.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. As she stunned in the skimpy lingerie, Helen then spoke about how she was pleased to have been asked to help edit the bra she was sporting. 'Even though sometimes you don't feel so confident or toned, just got for it,' the Corrie star added. 'Even though I've got cellulite and my body isn't as toned as it used to be, I just thought, "you know what Helen go for it, you only live once."' Helen later showed off her final look for the evening, with the beauty letting her blonde locks down with a denim blue button-up dress ready for her night out with a friend. The model's latest Instagram post comes days after she was pictured partying with Wayne Linker at the notorious O Beach Ibiza club. Following a heavy night, Helen shared her hungover state with her followers saying: 'I am really hungover, I am like a lizard. 'I am not drinking for a long time. I know I will feel better tomorrow. I have the school run tomorrow. 'Oh my god. I literally got in at six in the morning'. Helen later showed off her final look for the evening, with the beauty letting her blonde locks down with a denim blue button-up dress ready for her night out with a friend It came on the same week the 34-year-old model dramatically cut the asking price of her six bedroom luxury mansion on the outskirts of Bolton from £1.5million to £1,195,000. Admitting she's 'really struggling financially', Helen had initially listed the property spanning more than 5,000 feet in May. The mother-of-three had reportedly been left 'broke' following her split from ex Scott Sinclair, with Helen even claiming she barely had enough money to pay a £10 cab fare to get her son Charlie, three, to nursery. Helen and Scott separated in 2022 after 13 years together, before she moved on with Robbie Talbot, 45, only to split last month after a year of dating. On her failed romance with ex Scott, Helen revealed she was the one to call time on their relationship. She said they 'were always quietly breaking up and then getting back together' until one day she called it quits for good. Helen told The Sun: 'In the end, it was me who decided [to break up]. I'll always be sad it didn't work out, and we still have love for each other, but we're happier apart.' Speaking to Charlotte Dawson on her Naughty Corner podcast, Helen said: 'I still love him very much, I care about him deeply, but we don't like each other. 'We don't like each other at all, we don't get on. I do know that Scott - he'd never admit it - cares about me too and he does love me. 'But I'm so done, I could never have another relationship again where we would always be bickering. I haven't got another argument in me. 'As women we try and do anything we can to make it work with the father of your children and I did. But I think for me if I was in a relationship with someone else it would have to be easy because I haven't got the energy in me again, I've done all that with the father of my kids.' Helen went onto say co-parenting is 'hilarious' as she revealed the pair try and avoid each other so they don't 'argue' in front of their kids. She continued: 'I've been a single mum for two years now. Co-parenting is hilarious, we were together for 13 years. 'The last time I saw him, I thought it was quite funny, I was taking the p*** out of him because he had a bucket hat on. I think he was trying not to laugh. 'He lives in Bath and I live in North Manchester so its about five hours and we meet in Birmingham to exchange things and the kids. 'He's throwing things in my boot and I just started taking the mickey out of his bucket hat to lighten the mood. 'We just try and not be in the same house together because the children are the priority and I want a good environment for them and I don't want them to see us arguing.'

Terrified Gemma Collins calls cops & beefs up security after man sends ‘nasty and menacing' letter to her home

SHOCKED TV star Gemma Collins rang cops in terror after getting an 'abusive and menacing' letter at her home. The former Towie star, 44, is said to be petrified by the sender's hate note. 4 Fearing a kidnap plot like the one targeting TV presenter Holly Willoughby, Gemma phoned officers who then visited her home in the Essex countryside. The worried star, who has been battling pneumonia, has since beefed up security with 24-hour guard dog patrols. Family and friends have kept her company. A source told The Sun on Sunday: 'Gemma was left shaken and very scared for her safety after she received a threatening and abusive letter from a man expressing his extreme dislike for her and using menacing language. 'It was really nasty and made reference to tracking her down, so she called the police straight away. 'It was alarming that this man knew her home address, but she already upped security and has round-the-clock guard dogs and has cameras onsite. 'She is always incredibly friendly with all her fans and happy to stop for pictures and a chat so to have someone send such an unpleasant letter has really shocked her. 'She was very grateful to the police, who are taking it very seriously and have given her practical advice on how to handle herself. It is an ongoing investigation. 'She thought about what had happened to Holly Willoughby and her kidnap threat ordeal so didn't want to take any chances. 'Police are confident they are going to track down the culprit.' Gemma, who lives with businessman fiancé Rami Hawash, told a podcast in May how she has had multiple stalkers over the years. They had threatened to kill her and sent 'terrifying' letters to her boutique in Brentwood. Watch hilarious moment Gemma Collins launches bid to become a DAME as she sets sights on royal nod She told how it 'played havoc on her mind' and was the reason she stepped away from front of house work. Gemma said: 'No one would believe the bl**dy crap I've had to deal with. I've had a woman stalker who wrote me a letter in white gloves and wanted to kill me. You know, people would wish me dead. I'd get all sorts at the shop. Weird. 'People are weird. And that's why in a way I came away from my shop in the end.' In 2019 The Sun revealed she had called in police over fears she was being hounded by a stalker. Gemma claimed she had seen a man who previously verbally abused her outside her home over six days. The scares have even made her consider a move away from Essex. 4 Gemma, a contestant in 2019's Dancing On Ice, has previously spoken of her love of the countryside, saying: 'The only way is the Cotswolds for me.' Earlier this month she revealed her battle with pneumonia, showing pictures of herself with a drip in her arm. She said: 'It's shocking, I've had it for over three weeks and had steroids given to me by my doctor. 'It was DJ Fat Tony's wedding and I had to take them to get through that. But I'm off them now and the sickness is kicking back in. 'It's so frustrating because I normally have so much energy and I'm always loving life. But now I get really breathless really quickly and I feel like I'm dying.' Last week it emerged she is in talks to join I'm A Celebrity: All Stars in South Africa — despite quitting the Australian jungle after just three days of the main series in 2014. Essex Police said they were aware of Gemma's report. 4
