Who could be California's next governor after Kamala Harris bows out? These contenders are eyeing top job
AP Kamala Harris confirms she won't run for California governor in 2026, paving the way for Democratic candidates like Eleni Kounalakis, Xavier Becerra, and Katie Porter to battle for Gavin Newsom's seat. Kamala Harris announced on Wednesday that she will not run for Governor of California. People had been wondering for months if she would run after she lost the presidential race to Donald Trump last a statement, Harris said she had thought seriously about running but finally decided not to after "deep reflection". She said she loves California, its people, and its promise, and called it her home. Harris added that she will not run for any elected office for now and will instead spend time listening to Americans and helping other Democrats win, as per the report by NBC. She also mentioned that she would share more about her own plans in the coming months. Two people close to her said Harris wants to keep the door open for a possible run for President in 2028. Running for governor wouldn't stop her from running for president, but it would have made things harder, so she took that into account. ALSO READ: Sydney Sweeney sparks debate with American Eagle 'great jeans' campaign amid Ted Cruz criticism One of those people said Harris had many conversations over months before deciding. They said it was a really tough decision and she struggled with it because she wanted to have the biggest impact possible, according to the report by NBC. Another person who knows her plans said she met her advisers about a month ago in Los Angeles to talk it through. At that meeting, her options were: don't run for governor, prepare for 2028, or step away from elected politics altogether. In the end, she made the decision on her own, that person said. In the short term, she's thinking about working with nonprofits and maybe starting a political action committee (PAC). One source said she's also planning to help campaign for Democrats in the upcoming midterm elections. A third person who spoke with her on Wednesday said Harris still wants to talk to Californians and others across the U.S. That person also said Harris had a real chance of winning the governor race if she had decided to run, as stated by NBC. But they added that she wants to stay part of national politics and talk about issues like Donald Trump. Being in California debates and forums would not let her do that at a national level, so she stepped had 10 years of experience in California statewide roles, first as attorney general and then as U.S. senator. She left the Senate after Joe Biden won the 2020 election and made her Vice President. In the last presidential race, she replaced Biden as the Democratic nominee after he dropped out. Now that Harris is not running, the race for California's next governor is wide open. Current Governor Gavin Newsom can't run again because of term limits. Several Democrats have already jumped into the race, trying to replace him, as per the NBC report. ALSO READ: Karoline Leavitt's 2022 campaign still owes $323,000 — and there's no cash left to pay it back These candidates include Lt. Gov Eleni Kounalakis, Xavier Becerra (former health secretary and state attorney general), Katie Porter (former congresswoman), Toni Atkins (former state senate president), and Antonio Villaraigosa (former LA mayor). California is a strongly Democratic state, and most expect the Democratic Party to keep control of the governor's office. In the last presidential race, Harris won California by 20 points, showing how blue the state still is, as mentioned in the report by NBC. Q1. Why did Kamala Harris decide not to run for California governor? Kamala Harris chose not to run so she can stay active in national politics and possibly prepare for a 2028 presidential run. Q2. Who are the top candidates for California governor after Kamala Harris dropped out? Democrats like Eleni Kounalakis, Xavier Becerra, Katie Porter, Toni Atkins, and Antonio Villaraigosa are running to replace Gavin Newsom.

Thailand, Cambodia plan border visits for diplomats as violence eases
Bangkok, Jul 31 (AP) Thailand and Cambodia separately planned border visits for foreign diplomats to observe damages from the nearly weeklong clash, as violence that continued after a ceasefire appears to have eased. The ceasefire reached in Malaysia was supposed to take effect at midnight Monday, but it was quickly tested as Thailand and Cambodia continued to accuse each other of violating the truce agreements. Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Thursday it is organising a trip to the border for military attachés of foreign missions and the media on Friday to show the impact of the clashes on the ground. Cambodia is also organising a border visit for foreign diplomats on the same day. It held a similar trip on Wednesday attended by representatives from 13 countries, including the US and China. Thailand's government spokesperson Jirayu Houngsub said Thursday that there had been no new clashes reported overnight Wednesday. But tensions on other fronts continue to simmer. Officials in Thailand's border province of Surin, one of the critical locations of the conflict, on Thursday cautioned evacuees against returning home as they were surveying affected areas for any ammunition that might still pose a risk. A spokesperson for Cambodia's Defence Ministry, Maly Socheata, said Thursday that Cambodia has received the body of one of its soldiers from Thailand. 'I hope that the Thai Army will return all our soldiers who are currently in the custody of the Thai Army to Cambodia as soon as possible," he said. Thai foreign minister Maris Sagniampongsa said the Cambodian soldiers were being well taken care of and would be sent back once Thailand is confident they no longer pose a threat. He said security officials would determine when the return would be. Hun Manet and Thailand's acting prime minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, agreed Monday to an 'unconditional" halt in the fighting, which has killed at least 41 people. The fighting began last week after a land mine explosion along the border wounded five Thai soldiers. The peace talks were hosted by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. He called the ceasefire a 'vital first step towards de-escalation and the restoration of peace and security." The ceasefire was brokered with US pressure as President Donald Trump said he would not move forward with trade agreements if the conflict continued. But both countries continued to blame each other, and Thailand accused Cambodia of launching new attacks on Tuesday and Wednesday after the agreement took effect. Cambodia's Major General Chan Sopheaktra of the Preah Vihear province said Wednesday that the Cambodian military has been strictly adhering to the ceasefire agreement and that there had been two ceasefire violations by Thai forces since the agreement took effect. He did not elaborate on the violations. Cambodia and Thailand have clashed in the past over their 800-kilometre border. Tensions had been growing since May, when a Cambodian soldier was killed in a confrontation that created a diplomatic rift and roiled Thailand's domestic politics. 'Costing our country trillions of dollars': Donald Trump calls Jerome Powell 'too stupid' after rate decision; central bank holds rates steady for fifth straight time
President Donald Trump lashed out at Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell on Thursday, accusing him of being 'too stupid' and 'too political' for the job after the central bank opted to keep interest rates unchanged for the fifth consecutive meeting. 'Jerome 'Too Late' Powell has done it again!!! He is TOO LATE, and actually, TOO ANGRY, TOO STUPID, & TOO POLITICAL, to have the job of Fed Chair. He is costing our Country TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS, in addition to one of the most incompetent, or corrupt, renovations of a building(s) in the history of construction! Put another way,'Too Late' is a TOTAL LOSER, and our Country is paying the price!' Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, a day after the Federal Reserve announced its decision to hold the key lending rate steady. Meanwhile, US inflation edged higher in June, with the Federal Reserve's preferred price gauge reflecting the early impact of President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs on a broad range of goods. According to Commerce Department data released Thursday, prices rose 2.6% year-on-year in June, up from 2.4% in May. Core inflation, which excludes food and energy, held steady at 2.8%—a figure revised higher for May, AP reported. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Earlier, the US Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged for the fifth straight meeting, defying pressure from President Donald Trump and highlighting concerns over rising inflation linked to tariffs. Chair Jerome Powell said tariffs were starting to push up prices, but it was too early to tell if the impact would last. 'That is a risk to be assessed and managed,' he told reporters, as quoted AP. The Fed held its key short-term rate at around 4.3%, where it has remained since three cuts last year. Two governors—Christopher Waller and Michelle Bowman—voted for a cut, marking the first such dual dissent from Fed governors in over three decades. One official, Adriana Kugler, was absent. Powell stressed that no decision had been made for the next meeting. 'We have made no decisions about September,' he said, warning that premature easing could reignite inflation.
