‘So proud…': Former UK minister praises his nephews, speaking up for their jailed father Imran Khan
In a note on X, Goldsmith, while advocating for Imran Khan himself, sang high praises of his nephews, feeling 'proud' of them. While quoting a post by Mario Nawfal, an Australian entrepreneur, Goldsmith said, 'So proud of my nephews. They have never courted publicity. The contrary. But they are speaking up now for their father @ImranKhanPTI - a hero for so many in Pakistan, an uncorruptible leader who is being tortured by a desperate, corrupt and greedy establishment.'
Nawfal's account has been withheld in India due to the ongoing India-Pakistan tensions.
The 72-year-old has been incarcerated in Adiala Jail of Rawalpindi, the garrison city, since mid-2023 in connection with multiple cases.
Imran Khan's sons Kasim Khan and Suleiman Khan, in an interview with Nawfal, urged US President Donald Trump and the international community to help free their jailed father.
According to a report published in Arab News, Kasim Khan and Suleiman Khan spoke about the 'suppression of democracy' in Pakistan, and a lack of basic facilities for their father in his prison cell. They said he was being kept on 'trumped up charges,' and called on the Trump administration and the international community to press Islamabad for his release.
'Anyone who looks into it a little can kind of see that,' Suleiman said. 'In terms of a message to the Trump administration, we'd call for any government that supports free speech and proper democracy to join the call for our father's release, and especially the most powerful leader in the world," the report quoted Suleiman as saying.
Imran Khan's older son Kasim Khan said they just wanted the international community to see what had been going on in Pakistan and 'hopefully take action.'
On May 9, Imran Khan's party had filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court seeking his release from jail, claiming a threat to his life due to the impact of the prolonged detention on his health and in view of the escalating military conflict with India, news agency PTI reported.
Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf party, in a WhatsApp message, said that the party's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur approached the Islamabad High Court for the release of the party founder.
'The Islamabad High Court has been approached for the release of Imran Khan. An application has been filed by Chief Minister KP Ali Amin,' a PTI report quoted the party.
'It has been requested that in view of the current war situation with India, for national harmony and solidarity, and due to the fear of a drone attack in Adiala Jail, he be immediately released on parole/probation."

The US imposition of 25% tariff is `terrible' and India has done to stand up to Donald Trump's bullying and calling the US bluff, says a leading US trade expert. US President Donald Trump on Wednesday, July 30, announced the imposition of a 25 per cent tariff on all goods coming from India starting August 1(PTI/File) ``India could have fared a lot worse if it had given in to US pressure to open its agriculture and dairy industries, which is America's principal interest. To that extent, the 25% tariff is along expected lines, Biswajit Dhar, told this reporter, adding that 'India sensibly shielded its agricultural and dairy markets from American access. Had we caved, the harm would have been much worse.' He said that India must keep its small and marginal farmers in mind and their interests could scarcely be ignored. ``No trade deal can be so one-sided,'' the trade expert said. Dhar also said that the threat to impose tariffs on India's import of Russian oil ratcheting up the pressure on New Delhi, is unacceptable. ``The US has no business telling India how it should manage its relations with other countries. It is a direct impingement on India's sovereignty," Dhar said. "What is most objectionable is the manner in which the US President cites what kind of trade relations will have with other countries," he said. "First, you said you played a part in ending the India-Pakistan conflict. Now he is going even further. India cannot be led by Trump," Dhar added. President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the United States would impose a 25% on goods imported from India, alongside an additional "penalty" import tax, citing India's significant trade barriers and continued purchasing of Russian oil and military equipment. In a social media post, Trump stated that while India "is our friend", its existing tariffs on US goods were "far too high, among the highest in the World". He also criticised India's "most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country". The US president added that India's procurement of military equipment and oil from Russia had enabled the war in Ukraine. As a result, he intended to charge an additional "penalty" on Indian imports starting this Friday, as part of his administration's revised tariffs on multiple countries. ``What Trump's decision has done is to scuttle, in effect, Indo-US bilateral trade talks, which were proceeding alongside," Dhar said. The US president's comments on social media called into question the prospects of a deal with a key US trading partner just days before his tariff deadline. This move follows Washington running a US$45.8 billion trade imbalance in goods with New Delhi last year, according to the US Census Bureau. India said on Wednesday that it was committed to a fair and balanced trade agreement with Washington after Trump's tariff announcement. Top trade officials have been transiting back and forth between Washington and New Delhi for months in pursuit of a final agreement. "India and the US have been engaged in negotiations on concluding a fair, balanced and mutually beneficial bilateral trade agreement over the last few months. We remain committed to that objective," the Indian government said in a statement. Asked what New Delhi could do now, including imposing counter tariffs as China had done, Dhar said that India needs to wait and watch. ``The kind of tariffs he has imposed on India and other countries, will come back and bite the US,'' he predicted. Asked what the short-term impact of this tariff imposition would be, Dhar said while they will be 'painful' and will have a clear bearing on exports from India, US companies which trade in India would also suffer. ``For instance, the US pharmaceutical industry leverages the Indian pharmaceutical sector for cost-effective production, particularly of generic drugs, which significantly benefits the US healthcare system through lower drug prices and increased access. Indian companies, in turn, find a large and lucrative market in the U.S., especially for generic medications. This balance could be disturbed," he said. US tariffs will also impact its smartphone industry, Dhar predicted. For the first time India has overtaken China as the No. 1 exporter of smartphones to the US, following Apple's tariff-driven manufacturing pivot to New Delhi. India-made devices accounted for 44% of smartphone imports in the US during the second quarter, up sharply from 13% during the same period last year, according to a new report published Monday by research firm Canalys. The total volume of smartphones made in India jumped 240% year-over-year, Canalys wrote.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed gratitude to United States President Donald Trump for the 'historic' US-Pakistan trade agreement, calling it a 'landmark deal', in a social media post on July 31. 'I wish to convey my profound thanks to President Trump for his leadership role in finalization of the historic US-Pakistan trade agreement, successfully concluded by our two sides in Washington, last night,' Shehbaz Sharif wrote on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter). 'This landmark deal will enhance our growing cooperation so as to expand the frontiers of our enduring partnership in days to come,' he added. Donald Trump on July 30 announced that the US has sealed a deal with Pakistan to work together on developing the South Asian nation's 'massive oil reserves'. Pakistan has long claimed to have large oil deposits along its coast, but no progress has been made to tap those deposits, according to a PTI report. The country currently imports oil from the Middle East to meet its energy demands. According to state-run Radio Pakistan, the breakthrough was reached during a meeting of Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb with US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer in Washington, DC. In his own post on Truth Social, Donald Trump said the Us deal with Pakistan involves working together 'on developing their massive oil reserves'. 'We are in the process of choosing the Oil Company that will lead this Partnership. Who knows, maybe they'll be selling Oil to India some day!' he added. The trade agreement reportedly aims at boosting bilateral trade between the US and Pakistan, expand market access, attract investment and foster cooperation in areas of mutual interest. 'The agreement will result in reduction of reciprocal tariffs especially on Pakistani exports to the United States. This deal marks the beginning of a new era of economic collaboration especially in energy, mines and minerals, IT, cryptocurrency and other sectors,' an official statement said. The deal complements Pakistan's existing efforts to broaden the scope of bilateral economic ties, and also enhances its access to the US market and vice versa. Additionally, the deal is expected to spur increased US investment in Pakistan's infrastructure and development projects. The trade agreement underscores the commitment of both nations to deepen their bilateral relationship and explore all avenues for strengthening trade and investment ties, according to the report.

Lok Sabha adjourned till 4 pm amid continued Opposition protests
New Delhi, Jul 31 (PTI) Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned for the second time on Thursday amid protests by Opposition members over various issues, including poll roll revision in Bihar. As soon as the House met again at 2 pm, the Chair had to adjourn the proceedings till 4 pm as Opposition members continued with their noisy protests. Some Opposition members were in the Well of the House raising slogans as they sought to raise certain issues. Awadhesh Prasad, who was chairing the House, urged the members to take their seats but adjourned the proceedings as his pleas went unheard. Earlier, Speaker Om Birla had urged the protesting members to stop shouting slogans and go back to their seats. 'You (protesting members) don't want to discuss issues?…," he said and also asked whether people have chosen them to indulge in sloganeering in the House. The House is for discussing issues and the behaviour of the members is not appropriate, Birla said before adjourning the proceedings till 2 pm. As the din continued, the proceedings were adjourned in less than seven minutes. The House congratulated the scientists for the successful flight of a GSLV rocket that placed an earth observation satellite, jointly developed by ISRO and NASA.
