'Creation Of Bangladesh Justified?: Himanta Hits Out At Indira Gandhi Govt Over Illegal Immigrants

While Himanta Biswa Sarma said Indira Gandhi deserves credit for India's 1971 victory over Pakistan, he raised doubts on whether the creation of Bangladesh was justified.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday criticised former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's government in 1971 for 'squandering the opportunity" to reclaim occupied Indian territories, after the Indian Armed Forces 'crushed" the Pakistan Army during the Bangladesh Liberation War, and not dealing with illegal immigration.
Speaking in the Assam Assembly, Sarma said, 'In 1971, under the leadership of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, India won the war. The Indian Army achieved victory, and Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister, she rightly deserves credit."
'However, after the victory, 93,000 Pakistani prisoners of war (POWs) captured by India were returned to Pakistan, but we could not secure even nine POWs from Pakistan."

He further said, 'Yes, we won the war but what exactly did we achieve. We created Bangladesh. But are we satisfied with that decision today? It's worth asking in 2025: Was the creation of Bangladesh the right move?"
He said Indira Gandhi could have at least demanded the return of all illegal migrants in exchange for supporting the creation of Bangladesh. 'Though Indian Forces crushed the Pakistani Army in 1971, the Govt of the day could not secure Indian interests and squandered the opportunity to reclaim back occupied Indian territories," he said.
India initially provided humanitarian aid and extended support to the Bengali resistance force, the Mukti Bahini. After Pakistan launched pre-emptive strikes on Indian airbases, India declared a full-scale war and engaged Pakistani forces across land, air and sea.
In collaboration with the Mukti Bahini, India defeated Pakistani forces in just 13 days, capturing 93,000 Pakistani soldiers and leading to the creation of Bangladesh. India and Pakistan signed the Simla Agreement in 1972, with both sides agreeing to resolve issues peacefully.
India agreed to repatriate Pakistani soldiers in exchange for Pakistan's formal recognition of Bangladesh. However, this move has been criticised by several political leaders, who said India missed an opportunity to reclaim Pakistan-occupied Kashmir without getting adequate concessions.

Himanta: Non-tribals on forest land will be evicted — period

1 2 Guwahati: Amid Assam's most aggressive land reclamation drive to date, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said he has ordered a sweeping crackdown on forest encroachments across all districts of the state. He said here on Friday that all district commissioners have been tasked with conducting immediate surveys and initiating evictions, sparing only those protected under the Forest Rights Act, 2006 (Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006). The directive is clear—enforce the law and reclaim the land. "Tribal communities who lived in forests before 2005 are protected under law. Everyone else will be evicted, period," Sarma said here on Friday, adding that the scale of encroachment is staggering. "Even at one eviction per month, it will take a decade to reclaim the land," he added. Since May 2021, when Sarma's government came to power, over 1.19 lakh bighas (approximately 160 sq km) of land has been cleared, evicting nearly 50,000 people. This includes 84,743 bighas (113 sq km) of forest land and 26,713 bighas (35.6 sq km) of general government ('khas') land. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Despite this, an alarming 63 lakh bighas (8400 sq km) — including 29 lakh bighas (3866 sq km) of forest land — remain under illegal occupation. On Thursday, the government carried out its largest single eviction yet, clearing 3,305.78 acres in Uriamghat, Golaghat district, along the Assam-Nagaland border. The ongoing operation targets the Rengma Reserve Forest, aiming to clear 1,500 hectares currently occupied by nearly 1,500 families, primarily Bengali-speaking Muslims. Many of them claim displacement from riverine 'char' areas due to erosion by the Brahmaputra. The eviction entered its fourth straight day on Friday across six villages, with no reports of violence. But the message from Dispur is clear, unauthorised settlement—regardless of community—is not negotiable. Sarma has reiterated that the drive will also extend to village grazing reserves (VGR), professional grazing reserves (PGR), satras, namghars, and other public lands. "This is about reclaiming Assam's land, restoring ecological balance, and enforcing the rule of law," he said.

Another Cooch Behar man gets Assam NRC notice

Jalpaiguri: Yet another Cooch Behar resident has received an NRC notice from Assam's Foreigners Tribunal. Baxirhat resident Dipankar Sarkar, who works as a carpenter in Guwahati's Paltan Bazar, has been residing in Assam for over a decade. In 2014, he was summoned by Assam Police on suspicion of being a Bangladeshi intruder and a case was registered against him in 2015. The notice, dated Jan 24 this year, was received by Sarkar in March. It directs him to appear before the tribunal with documents to establish his Indian nationality. Soon, Cooch Behar TMC president Avijit De Bhowmik shared an image of the notice on social media. While TMC has advised Sarkar to disregard the notice and assured him of all necessary assistance, BJP accused TMC of trying to play the "Bengali card". Similar notices were earlier issued to three other residents of Cooch Behar — Uttam Kumar Brajabashi, Nishikanta Das and Mamina Bibi.

Many green card holders shelve travel plans after US advisory

Hyderabad: The US Customs and Border Protection's (CBP) recent reminder to all green card holders about carrying proof of their alien registration at all times, has left Indian immigrants anxious. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Speaking to TOI, many of them said that despite having valid documents they have shelved their holiday plans or turned down invites to family functions. Some have even put off their work trips, fearing trouble. As per the USCBP's recent advisory, not having an "alien registration or alien registration receipt card" can lead to "misdemeanour and fines" if stopped by federal law enforcement. "I cancelled a trip to Atlanta for my niece's wedding because I didn't want to take a flight and risk being questioned," said an Indian from New York who has been living in the US for over 15 years. "Even though my documents are in order, it's just not worth the stress," he added. Similarly, another immigrant — a resident of Chicago for 10 years — shared how he has called off his trip to Florida for the time being. "I recently secured my green card and I cannot risk anything," he added. More fines in 2025: attorneys Immigration attorneys say that while the law requiring green card holders to carry their registration has been in place for long, under the Immigration and Nationality Act, it has rarely been enforced in the past. "In 2025, there's an uptick in CBP issuing fines, penalising people for not carrying their green cards," said Nicole Gunara, principal immigration attorney at Manifest Law, US. She added: "In Southern California alone the officials have issued fines to 46 individuals for not carrying their green card. This is twice as many as issued in the entire 2024." While families acknowledge the need for regulation, such moves, they say instill fear even among the law-abiding populace. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "We came here legally. We pay taxes and contribute to the country's economy. But when you hear things like this, it reminds you how fragile your status is. I've started carrying my green card with me everywhere," said a 54-year-old, living in New Jersey for the last 21 years. Lawyers uphold this practice. "Under the current administration, it's best to always keep your original documents and proofs with you. So far, we have not seen any cases of deportation, but fines/violations are never good. Compliance is everything now," said Gunara. MSID:: 123044976 413 |
