IN PHOTOS: Track and field history belongs to Rob Ferreira's boys
The Track+Field Series started this year as a way to bring together the best high school athletes from across the country, in pursuit of being crowned the number one athletics high school in South Africa.
Before the national grand finale, nine regional competitions were held in each province to crown a provincial champion that would compete in the national finale. Each school could enter a boys' and girls' team comprising the best U15, U17 and U19 athletes the school has to offer.

Having won both the boys' and girls' competition in Mpumalanga, Rob Ferreira represented the province in the grand finale at the University of Johannesburg Stadium on April 10 and 11.
In the girls' competition, Bethlehem Voortrekker of Free State were victorious with a total of 739 points. Hoërskool Stellenbosch finished second (704) while Rob Ferreira ended third with 596.
Even though the boys' competition was tough, the Rob Ferreira boys were untouchable. They emerged as overall victors with a total of 625 points, while Stellenbosch (605) finished second and TuksSport High School (585) third.

Sedibeng hosts SAPS Rugby National Championships
VANDERBIJLPARK.- Vuvuzelas were the order of the day during the South African Police Service (SAPS) Rugby Championships finals at Isak Steyl Stadium on August 1. The five-day rugby national championships came to an end with the men's and women's finals. The atmosphere was electric. The tournament saw the nine provinces battling for the championships. The programme started with the women's finals, and was followed by the Division B men's finals and the Division A final. The most exciting final was between Gauteng and Free State in the Division B men's section. This game kept the spectators on the edge of their seats for the better part of the game. It was a fast-flowing game of rugby with Gauteng being outstanding. Gauteng was crowned the champions in Division B after they beat their opponent, Free State, 38-31. This was the best final of the day, with spectators enjoying the action. In other finals, the Eastern Cape was crowned the champions in the men's Division A. This was after they beat Western Cape 30—19. Eastern Cape also crowned the champions in the women's Division A after they beat Gauteng 3-2 in an exciting final. These nail-biting finals were attended by the who's who in SAPS and sports. Sedibeng Ster Sport was there to capture the action. The tournament was hailed a great success by the hosting province, Gauteng. The SAPS Gauteng Province representative said this would go down as one of the best championships.

The 17-year-old brought home a gold medal in discus with a throw of 52.99m, dominating her competitors, with silver medallist Tunisia's Katr Jaoued throwing 48.28 and the bronze medallist, Namibia's Marika Weitz, throwing 44.84. "Felt familiar even though it was my first time. Super nervous at the start, but when I knew I had it in the bag, I realised I had a good shot at winning this competition, and I did. I walked into the competition with a good mindset and with the goal to break my PB. So, I was pretty chuffed and proud to be able to bring gold home for South Africa and to represent my country. I was filled with emotions after my big win, but it finally sank in the night after my competition when I finally realised I was the African champ at my very first African games," said Ueckermann. The Hoërskool Stellenbosch learner said the championships that took place between 16-20 July in Abeokuta, Nigeria, were an opportunity for the best athletes from each country to compete for the chance to be crowned as best on the continent. "I threw on the 17th of July and received a gold medal for Women's U18 discus throw with a distance of 52.99, almost 53m. I broke my previous PB with a distance of over 2 meters. I knew then that whatever happened next, we came into the competition to break my PB, and I accomplished it, and that alone made me excited." She told Eyewitness News that her father's passion for throwing sports was what grabbed her interest at a young age, and she wanted to follow in his footsteps. "So my dad was very passionate about discus throw and shot put. Seeing as he had gotten his provincial colours himself for discus throw when he was in high school, it inspired me to take part in shot put at the age of 10 years old in 2018. "I started off as a shot putter and went to Junior South African champs in the same year I started doing shot put, and placed 2nd in the 2018 SA junior school champs. When the time came, I was old enough to pursue discus throw in 2019, and my dad was my full-time coach." The African champion said that juggling school and sports wasn't easy, as she tries to stick to time slots for everything she needs to do daily to better herself as an athlete and to keep her marks up at school. "I want to strive to get my technique better, and with better technique comes better distances. I also want to focus on my academics because school comes first and my end-of-year marks mean a lot toward my future."

Mpumalanga teams bring silver medals home
Mpumalanga's U15 sportsmen and -women flew the province's flag high at the 2025 National School Sports Winter Games Championships in Durban from July 11 to 15. The talented youngsters participated in soccer, netball and rugby. The netball outfit consisted of three teams of people living with disabilities; one for those with mild intellectual disabilities, one for severe intellectual disabilities, and another for deaf learners. In the girls' football team, seven players of the Easthigh Ladies Academy U15 team participated in the championships. Katlego Nape, Sinothile Mhlanga, Maria Leshaba, Nkosingimphile Mthombeni, Luthando Nkosi, Blessing Mnisi and Kamogelo Maroga represented Easthigh well during the games. Also from Mpumalanga, Witbank High School's entire U15 boys soccer team were selected to compete. ALSO READ: TS Galaxy Academy dominate Hotspurs in title chase at Halls Sports Ground Nkosimphile Mthombeni of Easthigh claimed the joint top goal scorer title and the girls' player of the tournament, while Kenny Zolani of Witbank claimed the coveted player of the tournament award in the boys' division, as well as various other top individual accolades. The Mpumalanga girls' and boys' football teams clinched silver medals and gave a great performance. In the finals, the boys team lost 3-5 against Free State in a penalty shoot-out, while the girls suffered a defeat of 4-1 in penalties against KZN. The results of the tournament are as follows: Day 1 Boys football Mpumalanga 1-1 Free State Mpumalanga 2-1 North West Mpumalanga 0-0 Eastern Cape. Girls football Mpumalanga 7-1 Northern Cape Mpumalanga 0-3 KZN. Boys rugby Mpumalanga 3-7 Free State Mpumalanga 7-10 KZN Mpumalanga 0-39 Western Cape Mpumalanga 5-10 North West. Girls netball Mpumalanga 4-3 KZN (mild intellectual disability) Mpumalanga 1-7 KZN (severe intellectual disability) Mpumalanga 1-12 KZN (deaf).
