GST rate cut hopes drive nearly ₹1 lakh crore rally in Nifty auto stocks

Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor, TVS Motor Company, and other auto stocks saw a massive rally in Monday's session after the government announced plans for sweeping changes to the goods and services tax (GST) regime. Analysts believe the reforms could revive demand in the auto sector, which has remained muted in recent quarters. Fourteen out of the 15 constituents of the Nifty Auto index closed with sharp gains, led by Maruti Suzuki, which surged 8.8% to ₹ 14,068 apiece, its biggest intraday jump in the last five years. Other major gainers included Ashok Leyland, TVS Motor Company, Hero MotoCorp, MRF, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Eicher Motors, all rising between 2.6% and 8%. The rally boosted the combined market capitalization of the 14 auto stocks by nearly ₹ 1 lakh crore, taking the sector's total m-cap to ₹ 22.56 lakh crore. In his Independence Day address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced significant GST reforms, the most comprehensive since the rollout in 2017, announcing the ushering in of a two-tier GST structure—a reform billed as the 'next generation of GST,' expected to take shape by Diwali, as per sources. The current GST tax structure has four main categories of rates, at 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. The proposed changes will see the number of categories reduced to two, with most goods that were taxed at 12% and 28% now taxed at the lower rate of 5% and 18%, respectively. Even though changes to the GST had been discussed for years, the timing of the announcement in Modi's Independence Day speech was a surprise to many. The move comes against the backdrop of President Donald Trump's threat to double tariffs on Indian exports to the US to 50% by August 27 to penalize the country for buying oil from Russia. Automobiles, currently under the 28% slab, would move to 18% if the proposal is approved, which analysts believe could lead to price cuts and potentially revive sales. Auto manufacturers have been struggling in recent quarters amid weak urban demand, with many shifting focus to exports to sustain growth. Hero MotoCorp and Bajaj Auto both reported muted sales growth in the June quarter, while Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motor also posted flat passenger vehicle sales. If implemented, the GST cut would offer much-needed relief for the Indian automobile sector. 'Autos fall under the 28% GST bracket. If autos move to 18% and we see sharp price drops, this could drive the next auto upcycle, similar to 2008,' said Morgan Stanley. 'Currently, GST on passenger vehicles ranges from 29% to 50%, as a cess is imposed on top of GST based on the vehicle's size and engine capacity. In the new regime, the government may reduce the tax on smaller cars to 18% (from 28%) and move bigger cars to a 'special rate' of 40% while scrapping the cess. This could lower prices of smaller cars by around 8% and larger cars by 3–5%,' HSBC noted. GST reduction would negatively impact government revenues in the near term but drive-up Auto demand and hence job creation in India. PVs generate USD14-15 billion in GST collection, and 2Ws USD 5 billion, said the brokerage. Domestic brokerage Motilal Oswal added that passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles, currently taxed at 28%, will benefit most from the cut. Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Ashok Leyland are well positioned to gain from lower effective prices and higher volumes. Disclaimer: This story is for educational purposes only. Govt mulling further FDI regime easing, more tax benefits for startups

The commerce and industry ministry is working on a 100-day reforms agenda which may include proposals such as further liberalising FDI regime, easing investments from neighbouring countries, and more tax benefits for startups, an official said. The proposals may also include easing certain environmental norms for the leather and footwear industry, liberalised rules to promote exports through e-commerce hubs, and integrating lab testing and certification requirements for various sectors, the official said. The government is embarking on the next 100-day agenda of transformation to take India on a fast track to developed nation. In Lokmat global economic convention, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said that in the next 100 days, the government will follow the clarion call given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15 to take India forward on a fast-tracked pathway. These proposals would help boost the country's exports and foreign direct investments (FDI). During April-July 2025-26, exports increased by 3.07 per cent to $ 149.2 billion, while imports rose 5.36 per cent to $ 244.01 billion. The trade deficit during the first four months of 2025-26 was $ 94.81 billion. FDI into India rose by 13 per cent to $ 50 billion in 2024-25. In July 2024, a pre-budget Economic Survey has made a strong case for seeking foreign direct investments from China to boost local manufacturing and tap the export market. At present, the bulk of the FDI coming into India falls under the automatic approval route, however, FDI from countries sharing land borders with India needs mandatory government approval in any sector. Countries which share land borders with India are China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Bhutan, Nepal, Myanmar, and Afghanistan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15 announced a 10-year project to develop an indigenous defence shield to protect India's vital military and civilian installations. In his Independence Day address from the ramparts of the Red Fort here, Modi also hinted at New Delhi's resolve to reduce dependence on foreign technologies for military platforms as he called for developing jet engines within the country for India's fighter aircraft. The government is also taking a number of steps to promote startup ecosystem in the country. It provides number of incentives to these budding entrepreneurs such as income tax benefits. The commerce ministry's arm DGFT is working on steps to promote exports through e-commerce medium as huge export opportunities are there in the sector.

FM Sitharaman to attend GoM meeting on Aug 20, explain next-gen GST reforms

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will attend a crucial meeting of a state ministerial panel on August 20 to put forth the Centre's proposal for sweeping GST reforms that will slash tax rates and lead to reduction in prices of common use items. The two-day meeting of the Group of Ministers (GoM) on GST rate rationalisation is scheduled on August 20-21 here, sources said. The meet will deliberate on the Centre's proposal for GST reforms of reducing the number of tax slabs in Goods and Services Tax (GST) to two -- 5 and 18 per cent, and a 40 per cent special rate on a select few items. Sources said apart from the rate rationalisation panel, the two-day meeting would be attended by members from GoMs on compensation cess and also health and life insurance. "The idea is to put forth the Centre's view point behind the GST reform proposal. Although the Centre is not a member of the GoM, Union Finance Minister's presence and her address will give the GoM a better understanding of the idea and thought process behind the Centre's proposal," a source told PTI. The GST reforms proposed by the Centre come against the backdrop of the levy period of GST compensation cess nearing an end and also the impending rate rationalisation to deal with the industry problem of duty inversion in various sectors. Also, a rate tweak in both health and life insurance premiums were being worked out by a GoM to give relief to the common man. The GST Council had earlier set up three separate GoMs on the three issues. While Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary is the convenor of the GoM on rate rationalisation and health and life insurance, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary is the convenor of the GoM on compensation cess. The Centre has proposed two-slab structure of 5 and 18 per cent classifying items under the category of 'merit' and 'standard' and the broad principle followed in the classification is to reduce tax burden for middle class, MSMEs, and the farm sector. The proposed 40 per cent slab, the highest permissible tax rate under the GST law, will be only for 5-7 items, including demerit goods like pan masala, tobacco and online gaming. Goods and Services Tax (GST) is currently levied at 5, 12, 18 and 28 per cent. While food and essential items are either at nil or 5 per cent, luxury and demerit goods are in 28 per cent slab, with a cess on top of it. If the Centre's proposal is accepted by the GoM, it would be placed before the GST Council, chaired by Sitharaman and comprising finance ministers from all states and UTs, in its meeting likely next month. The Centre's proposal entails moving 99 per cent of the goods in the current 12 per cent slab to 5 per cent, and 90 per cent of the goods and services in 28 per cent slab to the 18 per cent bracket. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day speech had promised a Diwali gift for citizens by implementing GST reforms which will reduce tax rates and benefit the common man. Soon after the announcement, the finance ministry unveiled its 'next generation' GST reform which is based on three pillars -- structural reforms, rate rationalisation and ease of compliance.
