‘A bro area full of testosterone': Tension over the Bondi Beach gym crackdown
Long-term users of the Bondi Park Fitness Station want Waverley Council to allow gym gear to be returned to the site after complaints resulted in the removal of the equipment in March.
Regular gym users say they were left stunned when the free weights were removed in response to concerns the site had become a public liability risk for Waverley Council.
A council report outlining concerns stated the fitness equipment posed safety risks, including potential trip hazards that might expose the council to claims for injuries.
The report added the removal of the equipment was in line with broader work by the council to 'rein in commercial operators' from the region's parks and reserves.
Along with safety concerns, there has also been debate over the equitable use of the site after some residents complained the gym was primarily used by groups of men and alienated other users, including women.
Joey Pamment, a regular user of the fitness station, believes the council crackdown is incongruous with Bondi's fitness lifestyle.

Man faces court accused of selling police uniforms
At least 28 pieces of police uniform have allegedly been sold illegally by a man who had access to the items through his employment. Benjamin Lee Onley appeared at Sydney's Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday after he was accused of stealing 71 pieces of unauthorised law enforcement uniform and attempting to sell them. Police have confirmed that Onley was employed by a company involved in the procurement and disposal of NSW Police Force uniform and insignia. The 50-year-old had access to items through his work, but police said investigations continue to determine the source of the items. Onley was arrested on Tuesday after detectives searched his home in Thirroul on the NSW south coast earlier in July and seized a mobile phone. Police allege the phone contained evidence that Onley had attempted to sell 71 pieces of NSWPF uniform and insignia, of which 28 were sold. Photos shared by NSW Police revealed the items included badges, caps and brimmed hats. Onley was also allegedly in possession of unauthorised firearms, including a pistol. Following his arrest, he was charged with four offences including stolen property charges and possession of prohibited firearms. Onley is in custody after not applying for bail at his first court appearance on Tuesday. The matter is expected to return to court on August 12.

Russia carries out deadly strike on Ukrainian prison
A Russian air strike on a prison in Ukraine's southeastern Zaporizhzhia region has killed at least 17 inmates and wounded more than 80 others, Ukrainian officials say. In the Dnipro region, authorities reported at least four people killed and eight injured. Ukraine's air force said Russia launched two Iskander-M ballistic missiles along with 37 Shahed-type strike drones and decoy UAVs. They say 32 Shahed drones were intercepted or neutralised by Ukrainian air defences. The attack late on Monday hit the Bilenkivska Correctional Colony with four guided aerial bombs, according to the State Criminal Executive Service of Ukraine. At least 42 inmates were hospitalised with serious injuries, while another 40 people, including one staff member, suffered injuries. The strike destroyed the prison's dining hall, damaged administrative and quarantine buildings, but the perimeter fence held and no escapes were reported, authorities said. Ukrainian officials condemned the attack, saying targeting civilian infrastructure, such as prisons, was a war crime under international conventions. In Dnipro, missiles hit the city of Kamianske, partially destroying a three-storey building and damaging nearby medical facilities including a maternity hospital and a city hospital ward. Two people were killed and five were wounded, including a pregnant woman who is in a serious condition, according to regional head Serhii Lysak. Further Russian attacks hit communities in Synelnykivskyi district with FPV drones and aerial bombs, killing at least one person and injuring two others. According to Lysak, Russian forces also targeted the community of Velykomykhailivska, killing a 75-year-old woman and injuring a 68-year-old man.
