Applications Open for Shared Apprenticeship Scheme in Pembrokeshire
Cyfle Building Skills is accepting applications for its Shared Apprenticeship Scheme in the Pembrokeshire region – with just 10 places available for motivated individuals looking to kick-start a career in the construction industry.
The award-winning scheme enables young people and career changers to gain valuable hands-on experience while studying towards a recognised vocational qualification. Through a shared apprenticeship model, participants rotate between a number of reputable local construction employers, gaining a wide range of real-world skills and on-site experience alongside one-day-a-week college learning.
To help interested candidates find out more, Cyfle's Pembrokeshire Coordinator, Paul Falzon, will be hosting a drop-in information session at The Corner Room, Haverhub, The Old Post Office, 12 Quay Street, Haverfordwest, SA61 1BG, on Wednesday 21 May 2025, between 09:00 and 13:00. No appointment is necessary.
Now in its 12th year, the Shared Apprenticeship Scheme has supported nearly 1,000 apprentices across South West Wales. Apprentices have the opportunity to specialise in a wide range of trades, including bricklaying, plastering, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting and decorating, maintenance/multi-skilling, and technical roles.
The scheme offers an ideal route into the industry, with around 90% of apprentices securing full-time employment upon completion. Backed by local construction businesses and supported by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, it helps meet the growing demand for skilled workers while offering a flexible and supportive path for those entering the sector. The scheme plays a key role in developing a future workforce for the construction industry, ensuring young people and career changers alike have the skills, knowledge, and experience to thrive.

Applications for the Pembrokeshire Shared Apprenticeship Scheme close at the end of June 2025. Those interested are encouraged to apply early due to limited availability.

Initiative Aims to Celebrate Wrexham's Creativity and Community Spirit
Owner Sarah Baker, artist Mickey Jones and Beth Williams A new initiative is set to shine a light on creativity, wellbeing and community spirit thanks to a collaboration between independent café Lot 11 and This is Wrecsam. This is Wrecsam is the official tourism and hospitality partnership for Wrexham County Borough, working to promote the region as a destination for visitors, businesses and residents. Through strategic campaigns, business support and place promotion, the partnership champions everything that makes Wrexham special – from hidden gems and local independents to major events and attractions. Now Lot 11 owner Sarah Baker and her team are launching a project that brings together art, local business and wellness experiences. The café has partnered with Wrexham artist Mikey Jones to create a bespoke skyline illustration, featuring the iconic Lot 11 building at its centre. The artwork will appear on a range of tote bags and merchandise, designed to both celebrate the city and support local promotion. Each tote bag will be filled with a Wrexham map, flyers and promotional material from local businesses, encouraging visitors to explore everything the city has to offer. This is Wrecsam is working closely with its member network to ensure a wide range of independent businesses and experiences are represented. In addition, Lot 11 will be teaming up with local wellness providers – including yoga, pilates, walking and fitness groups – to deliver a series of monthly wellbeing events. Attendees will each receive a tote bag, helping to spread the word about Wrexham and its thriving independent scene. The project is being supported by money from by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, and has been described as a celebration of creativity, collaboration and community – with Lot 11 and This is Wrecsam at its heart. The council has announced that it will use grant funding to support cheaper bus travel for the public in December 2025 by capping the cost of journeys over the festive period which will a maximum of £1.50 per journey in Rhondda Cynon Taf during the month of December. In addition bus travel for five-to-21-year-olds will be capped at £1 for a single journey from September 2025 – two months before this is fully rolled out as a national Welsh Government initiative in November. These offers will use funding from the UK Government's Shared Prosperity Fund. The UK Shared Prosperity Fund, from the UK Government, has been allocated to local authorities to help introduce initiatives that will reduce the cost of living for residents. Farmers invited to take part in North Wales tech trials
The on-farm trials will test 'smart' agriculture technology, focusing on Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) systems as part of the Smart Agriculture Internet of Things (IoT) project. The initiative is being funded by taxpayers via the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and delivered by Mentera on behalf of Ambition North Wales. Siwan Howaston, head of technical at Mentera, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for farmers in North Wales to be at the forefront of agricultural innovation. "The adoption of technologies like LoRaWAN is crucial for creating more resilient, productive, and sustainable farm businesses. "We encourage all interested farmers to apply and help us build a more technologically advanced future for agriculture in North Wales." The scheme aims to help improve efficiency, productivity, and sustainability by integrating IoT-based solutions into daily farm operations. According to Mentera, LoRaWAN technology could help support remote monitoring and management of livestock, water systems, soil health, and infrastructure. For example, real-time soil moisture and temperature sensors could guide optimal slurry application, helping to reduce environmental risk and improve compliance with regulations. The organisation says sensors could detect water tank levels and identify leaks to help prevent loss and infrastructure damage. The technology is also being touted as a way of support livestock tracking, infrastructure monitoring, and the remote management of gates and machinery. Farms participating in the trials will receive technical support from an agri-tech specialist to implement and assess the solutions. The programme is open to farms in the dairy, red meat, pig, poultry, arable, and horticulture sectors across Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Gwynedd, Anglesey, and Wrexham. Cllr Nia Jeffreys, lead member for Ambition North Wales's Digital Connectivity Programme and leader of Cyngor Gwynedd, said: "The transformative potential of this project is significant for the farmers involved. "All equipment is provided and installed, with the option to continue with use if they find the trial to be beneficial – so there could be much to gain."
