Tata Power RE bags 30 MW/120MWh battery energy storage project from NHPC
The project has been secured under NHPC's BESS Tranche-I tender through a competitive bidding route for Kerala State Electricity Board Ltd -- the end-user of the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) asset, TPREL said in a statement on Friday.
The project involves setting up a 30 MW / 120 MWh battery storage system at the 220 kV substation in Kerala. This means 30 MW of storage can provide back up of up to four hours.
This is its first Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA), TPREL said.
It will operate under a 12-year BESPA. The project is slated for commissioning within 15 months, positioning storage as a key enabler of round-the-clock renewable power and grid resilience.
The project will play a vital role in addressing peak power demand, enhancing grid flexibility, and enabling seamless integration of renewable energy in Kerala.
It is part of NHPC's broader initiative to develop 125 MW / 500 MWh of standalone battery storage capacity in the state of Kerala, under a Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding framework supported by Viability Gap Funding.
With this addition, TPREL's total renewable capacity now stands at approximately 10.9 GW, including 5.6 GW of operational projects, 4.6 GW of solar and 1 GW of wind, and 5.3 GW under various stages of development.

North Chennai thermal plant to get battery storage system
CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation Limited (TNPGCL) will soon launch Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with a capacity of 200 MW at the North Chennai Thermal Power Station on a pilot basis. Battery storage systems were so far considered options for solar and wind energy. However, the TNPGCL, for the first time, is looking to explore its use in thermal power stations to allow electricity storage during low demand. With the state's all-time maximum demand having touched 20,830 MW, there may not be immediate visible benefits through this pilot project. However, when scaled up in due course, it can ensure steady power supply, reduce the chances of power cuts, and avoid buying costly electricity from private companies, officials said. 'This will also save money for the power utility over time,' a senior TNPGCL official said. According to official sources, TNPGCL incurred a loss of around `2,991 crore in 2024-25 after the division of power utility into three separate entities. 'If proper steps are not taken, the losses may compound this year. Installing BESS in thermal stations will help control the losses,' another official said.

NTPC Green Energy looks to develop RE, battery energy storage projects in Bihar
State-owned NTPC Green Energy Limited has plans to set up renewable energy and battery energy storage projects (BESS) in Bihar , a move which will increase the company's portfolio and presence in the clean energy space. The company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited (BSPGCL) to take forward its plans. The MoU with BSPGCL aims for development of Battery Energy Storage Projects and Renewable Energy Project for decarbonisation and energy transition in Bihar, NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) said in a statement on Saturday. The agreement was signed between Sarit Maheswari, CEO (NGEL), and Abdesh Kumar Singh, Director Technical (BSPGCL), in the presence of Minister of Energy, Planning & Development of Government of Bihar Bijendra Prasad Yadav and other senior officials from the state government. NGEL is an umbrella company for the green business initiatives of NTPC and it undertakes projects through organic and inorganic routes and aims to be the flag-bearer of NTPC's green energy journey to achieve the ambitious target of 60 gugawatt (GW) by FY32.
