Toyota Gazoo Racing caps off Safari Rally with a strong finish

The inaugural South African Safari Rally, round three of the World Rally-Raid Championship, oncluded with the fifth stage on Saturday (24 May), wrapping up six days of racing through some of the country's most punishing terrain.
Final push
Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa crews Guy Botterill and Dennis Murphy, and Saood Variawa and Francois Cazalet capped the event with a double top 15 finish on the on the final 111 km special stage around Sun City.
The stage covered 222 km in total, featuring two liaison sections split by a high-speed special run through a mix of sand, soft gravel, rocky outcrops, and dry savannah.
Opening the route after winning the fourth stage proved a tall order for teenager Variawa and his French co-driver Cazalet as they struggled to maintain pace.
'I gave it everything,' said Variawa. 'I pushed at yesterday's winning pace, but opening the road makes it incredibly difficult. There's just no line to follow, and by the time a few cars are through, the route changes completely. We saw corners become straights just a few cars back.'

The duo finished 18th on Stage 5, seven min 31 sec behind the leader. 'All in all, it was an amazing event,' Variawa added. 'The scenery, the fans, the stages, everything was fantastic. We were fighting with the world's best, and it's clear we're moving in the right direction.'
Teammates Botterill and Murphy also rebounding strongly after a tough start to the event. They produced another clean run to finish 12th on the final stage.
'We had a really successful weekend overall,' said Botterill. 'We managed two 1-2 stage finishes as a team, which was fantastic. The pace is definitely there; we just need to cut out the small mistakes and learn how to better manage the road order strategy in these world-level events.'
Reflecting on the rally's, Botterill noted: 'Nobody won a stage starting in the top 10 this week. You really want to be starting fifth or sixth every day, but it's hard to get that balance right. The guys who've been doing this for a while know how to play the game. We're learning fast, and we'll come back stronger.'
All round success for Toyota
Both Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa GR Hilux EVOs completed the event without issues Variawa/Cazalet finishing 12th overall and with Botterill/Murphy 13th.
In the overall standings, works Toyota Gazoo Racing team Henk Lategan and Brett Cummings took the victory ahead of the Dacia Sandrider of nine-times world rally champion Sébastien Loeb and Fabian Lurquin, and the second Gazoo Racing Hilux EVO of Brazilian Lucas Moraes and Spanish co-driver Armand Monleon.
In the drivers' classification, Variawa edges closer to the top ten, while Botterill adds valuable points to his international campaign.
With the South African round complete, the focus shifts to the next round in Portugal on 22-28 September.

Brevis leads Proteas' top five highest T20I individual scores
Dewald Brevis 125 not out Perhaps more than the skill it took for the right-handed batter to bring up the biggest individual score by a South African in T20I cricket, it was the timing of the knock that carried more significance. Apart from the pure power of the batter, what was perhaps more special about Levi's knock was that he was under a lot of pressure as he was playing his second T20I match. Reeza Hendricks 117 Perhaps one of the most underrated batters in the modern era, Reeza Hendricks features on the list with his brilliant 117 against Pakistan at SuperSport Park in Centurion last summer. With Pakistan having set South Africa over 200 runs to win the match with their opening batter Saim Ayub scoring nearly a century, the Proteas needed one batter to stand tall, and the stylish Hendricks took all the responsibility, hitting ten sixes and seven fours to reach his maiden T20I ton. David Miller 106 not out It is no surprise that South Africa's most decorated finisher features on this list with one of his T20I centuries. The left-handed batter brought up this one at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, as South Africa looked to level the series against a strong India side about three years ago. Miller finished unbeaten on 106 off 47 deliveries, a knock which saw the batter smash seven sixes and eight fours despite South Africa going on to lose the match by 16 runs.

Du Plessis seeks legend status in high-stakes clash with Chimaev in UFC 319
The United Center in Chicago, home to the Chicago Bulls, is set to witness another iconic sporting moment when Dricus du Plessis and Khamzat Chimaev meet on Sunday morning. South African UFC middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis is aiming to have his name mentioned among the greats of his sport as he attempts to defend his belt for a third time at the iconic United Center in Chicago on Sunday morning, 17 August 2025, at UFC 319. Du Plessis' task won't be easy as he prepares to do battle against one of the scariest fighters on the UFC roster in Khamzat Chimaev. The South African took a walk through the United Center and described having 'goosebumps' before entering the venue on the latest episode of UFC 319 Embedded. The arena is iconic, as the biggest National Basketball Association stadium in the country with a capacity of more than 20,000. It's home to the Chicago Bulls and has the famous statue of Chicago Bulls basketball legend Michael Jordan's 'flying' jump erected inside the venue. Below the statue, the words: 'The best there ever was. The best there ever will be,' have been etched. The statement is widely believed to be true of Jordan by many basketball fans, while for Du Plessis it's what he's aiming to become in the middleweight division of the UFC. He's tread the path to making the claim of being the best there ever has been superbly so far, by going undefeated in his first nine fights in the division and taking big names out on his way there, including Robert Whittaker, Israel Adesanya and Sean Strickland. At this moment, the two fighters contesting for the crown of the greatest UFC middleweight fighter of all time are Adesanya and Anderson Silva. Victory for Du Plessis on Sunday against Chimaev — who many believe is unbeatable, given not only his 8-0 record but also the fashion of his victories — will put him in the mix with those legendary fighters. 'Next best' Du Plessis has made no secret about the fact that Chimaev is one of the best fighters on the UFC roster, despite him only fighting twice in the UFC middleweight division so far, beating Kamaru Usman and former champion Whittaker before earning a title shot. His time before then was spent in the welterweight division. 'I never wanted to be gifted anything, I wanted to fight the best of the best,' Du Plessis said. 'Khamzat, as soon as he made the change to middleweight, I knew that our paths were destined to cross, and that's a fight I want. 'For me it's about the quality of opponents. Who did I beat? Fighting guys that are the best of the best, and Khamzat's that guy.' Chimaev has a reputation for ending fights in the first round, with five of his eight wins coming in the first five minutes. Du Plessis, though, is not planning to wear him out initially, but instead take the fight to him. 'I'm not going out there to survive anything, I'm going out there to hunt,' the South African champion said. 'I'm a hunter, not a survivor. I'm going out there to flourish from the first second to the last. I'm there to win in the most spectacular fashion possible. 'The whole world's excited for this fight because it's truly the two best guys fighting each other. Everybody knows Khamzat is the best 'next guy'. I just know that I am the best.' But how's the burly South African feeling after a 12-week camp in preparation for this bout? 'I'm feeling amazing, I'm feeling unstoppable,' he said. Two stars Chimaev, who moved from his home in Chechnya and became a dual citizen of the United Arab Emirates, compared the summer weather in Chicago to his new home. 'Hot weather, [it] feels like back in Dubai,' he said. For Chimaev, despite his massive reputation and the damage he has done in the octagon, this is also the biggest fight of his career. His thoughts on what many fans believe could be the biggest fight of the year? 'They should expect Khamzat Chimaev in the cage,' he said. It's an unclear answer but it is him acknowledging how his star has risen since entering the UFC octagon for the first time in 2020. Du Plessis' first UFC fight was also just a few months prior to that as the pair were little known at the time. Now their stars are aligning for a clash that's set to be spectacular. The Soweto derby is the biggest game on the South African calendar, regardless of how Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs are playing. If the two clubs don't meet in the Carling Knockout, their first encounter will unfortunately be played in February of next year — February 28, to be exact. Judging by the events of recent weeks, both clubs could go into the game with new head coaches. Pirates have had a nightmare start to the new campaign. Both results have put a massive amount of pressure on Abdeslam Ouaddou, and fans and pundits have already begun to question if he's the right man to lead the club. When Jose Riveiro left at the end of last season, they were in a good place, and were hoping to put together the final pieces that would help them challenge Mamelodi Sundowns for the league title. Pirates have lacked identity in recent games, and Ouaddou's team selections have also come under scrutiny. Tshegofatso Mabasa, the club's top goal scorer over the last two seasons, has not been called upon, while the immensely talented Thalente Mbatha has also been excluded from matchday squads. In their game against Gallants, Ouaddou did something that baffled many fans — he started the game with Relebohile Mofokeng on the bench, robbing the team of one of their most potent attackers. Many fans have since voiced their dissatisfaction, and it's only a matter of time before they start calling for him to be shown the door. While Soweto's other club have had a better start to the season, speculation about Nabi's future refuses to go away. Chiefs kicked off their campaign in impressive fashion last weekend when they beat Stellenbosch FC in Athlone. But it was assistant coach Khalil Ben Youssef who was on the touchline. On top of that, several reports claim the relationship between Nabi and the club soured after a meeting before the campaign kicked off. It remains to be seen what happens when Nabi returns to South Africa after spending time in Tunisia attending to an urgent family matter. The derby has always been more than just a match – it's a statement of pride and identity and who really rules Soweto. But with both Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs caught in the storm of coaching uncertainty, February's clash could be shaped as much by boardroom decisions as by performances on the pitch. If either side hopes to emerge from that day with more than just bragging rights, the hard decisions will need to be made long before the first whistle blows.
