Sometimes, the most surprising discoveries come from unexpected places. A similar experience happened when a California teenager decided to test whether a simple houseplant could do more than beautify a room.
The teen was highly interested in science, and scientific curiosity led to a great and unexpected discovery!
Can an Ivy actually clean the surroundings?
The young researcher Ryan Kim shared his experiment at the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology's annual meeting in Anaheim, California. It was also co-authored by Hilary Spyers-Duran of West Coast Clinical Trials in Long Beach, California. His experiment revealed strong air-cleansing potential in English ivy.
Over a 12-hour period, the plant reduced airborne mold particles by approximately 78.5% and fecal matter particulates by over 94%.
How did he set up his experiment?
Kim placed moldy bread and canine feces in sealed containers, with measurements taken before and after placement with the English ivy. After six hours, mold decreased by about 60% and fecal particles by 58%; after twelve hours, reductions rose to 78% and 94%, respectively.
How does ivy 'clean' air?
According to co-author Hilary Spyers-Duran, a nurse practitioner and investigator at West Coast Clinical Trials, 'Aerosolized proteins are actually absorbed through the roots and soil of the plant,' she explained, telling how ivy may trap and filter harmful particles from the air.

Spyers-Duran suggested, 'This may be a better alternative, and more cost-effective' than an electronic air purifier (HealthDay). The idea can be a natural alternative to artificial air purifiers as a low-maintenance plant that does something typically handled by machines.
However, indoor-air specialist Jeffrey Siegel from the University of Texas, who studies building air quality, warns that one should actually prevent contaminants from entering the home in the first place.
He also pointed out the limitations of small-scale tests compared to real rooms, noting that soil itself can emit microbes or pollutants.
While this alternative might look interesting, English ivy comes with clear warnings that it is toxic to humans and pets if ingested, so it shouldn't be placed where children or animals can reach it.
How do conventional air purifiers compare to this?
At the same conference, researchers tested three air purifier brands in mold-infested homes. A Honeywell HEPA filter unit cleared 72–84% of mold particles within one hour. In contrast, other purifiers showed much lower removal rates: around 43–50% for Living Air and only 16–28% for the Sharper Image Ionic Breeze, even after three hours.

Best to avoid salons that don't sterilize metal tools or reuse razors. Choosing dental clinics that advertise infection control policies is a wise move. Hepatitis doesn't always announce itself with symptoms. It can sit silently in your body for years, slowly damaging your liver. In 2025, it's not just unsafe blood transfusions or drug use that are to blame. It's routine, everyday things like vaccines without immunity checks, stylish tattoos done carelessly, or injections in sketchy clinics that are also responsible. India and the United States are set to launch one of the most advanced Earth observation satellites ever built. The NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission will lift off on July 30, marking a new chapter in Indo-US space collaboration, 50 years after the landmark SITE project. NISAR will scan the planet every 12 days, detecting changes as small as a few centimetres across land, ice, water, and vegetation. Each pixel of its radar image will represent an area about half the size of a tennis court. Precision tool for a shifting planet NISAR will observe everything from Himalayan glaciers and glacial lakes to the farms of Punjab and the beaches of California. Its radar will help track the evolution of glacial lakes and improve understanding of GLOF (glacial lake outburst flood) risks, an increasingly urgent concern in the Himalayas. 'We've never had such a tool for studying Himalayan snow, glaciers and lake systems,' said Prof PG Diwakar of the National Institute of Advanced Studies. He also noted the L-band radar's capability to penetrate forest canopies and assess biomass, making it invaluable for conservation work. 'A dual-band SAR like this has never flown before,' he said. 'L-band opens up deeper imaging and new interferometric applications. You can track deformation, subsidence, and seismic shifts in much finer detail.' In disaster-prone areas, the satellite's interferometric accuracy will aid early detection of ground shifts. It can also assist in monitoring oil spills and other environmental hazards. A legacy decades in the making NISAR traces its lineage to Seasat, NASA's 1978 satellite that was the world's first to carry a spaceborne SAR. Though it operated for just 105 days, Seasat's legacy transformed Earth observation science. Nearly five decades later, NISAR will continue that work for at least three years, beaming down more data each day than any previous remote-sensing satellite. 'This will be the first mission between US and India to observe Earth in such a detailed way,' said Nicola Fox, associate administrator at NASA's science mission directorate. For India, which will lead the launch, NISAR strengthens its global scientific profile. For NASA, it extends a legacy of innovation in Earth science.
