Weather: Cape Town set for its first 'winter' rainfall

As winter approaches, Cape Town will brace for the usual onset of regular cold fronts, and Tuesday will herald in the first real 'winter weather' day.
With temperatures dropping to the low teens, there is also predicted to be plenty of rainfall around for most of Tuesday, with WindGuru forecasting as much as 3mm of precipitation to fall between 11am and 2pm.
There is also predicted to be some fairly strong wind around, gusting up to 30 knots during the morning.
Yet, the good news for those in Cape Town is the fact that the weather will begin to clear up by the weekend, when clear skies, minimal wind and decent temperatures around 20°C are predicted.
Elsewhere, there is also a rainy and windy predicted for Gqeberha on Wednesday. Heavy rain is predicted for the morning of the 21st, while the Windy City will experience gusts of up 34 knots throughout the day, but the weather also clears up for a pleasant upcoming weekend.
The most noteworthy weather for Johannesburg this week will arrive on Wednesday as well, when temperatures are predicted to plunge to single digits in addition to some strong gusting wind.
Even Durban won't be spared on Wednesday, with the coastal city also expected to see plenty of rain and particularly strong winds and rough seas during the afternoon and evening.

At least seven killed in Eastern Cape floods

The Eastern Cape Provincial Government has confirmed the death of seven people due to recent flooding emanating from inclement weather conditions in the province. These losses occurred amid intense cold, wet, and windy conditions that have severely affected several communities in the province; however, the fatalities have for now been reported from various areas in the OR Tambo District Municipality. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) had also issued several warnings for disruptive snow, rainfall, damaging winds, and waves in parts of the province after a cold front made landfall at the weekend. The Eastern Cape Provincial Government stated that the severe weather conditions have also caused significant damage to road infrastructure, displacement of residents, and, unfortunately, loss of life. The Provincial Government's spokesperson Khusela Rantjie said police reports have also confirmed that six bodies were found along Decoligny village in Mthatha, while the seventh body was recovered at Tsolo near Bedlana River. The search is still ongoing regarding a minibus carrying school children that swept away earlier this morning. Rantjie said as disaster management teams work tirelessly to assist affected households and secure the safety of residents, Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has deployed MECs to support the O.R. Tambo District Municipality in its efforts to rescue citizens, including ensuring the provision of necessary resources. 'As the weather persists, the province's priority is the safety and well-being of residents, while working to mitigate damage to infrastructure and restore essential services,' Rantjie said. Meanwhile, Mabuyane has emphasised the urgent need for caution, urging community members to avoid flooded areas, remain alert on slippery roads, and promptly report any hazards to authorities. 'This is a devastating reminder of nature's force. We urge everyone to exercise extra caution in areas prone to flooding. Our disaster response teams are on high alert and committed to ensuring the community's safety,' he said. Mabuyane is expected to visit the OR Tambo Municipality district on Wednesday, 11 June. How to survive the cold winter in Jozi

SA's winter doesn't last long, but it will test your resolve, your plumbing, and your ability to make a fire with damp firewood. A friend asked recently: how does one stay warm in a South African winter without losing your mind (or toes)? Let's face it, South African winters are weird. One minute it's sunny enough to venture outside without a Windbreaker, the next it's colder than your ex's heart at 3am. So, what's the average person to do when the cold creeps in like a passive-aggressive mother-in-law? Forget fashion. This is war. Put on so many layers that you start to look like a sentient laundry basket. Thermal underwear, turtlenecks, scarves, two jackets, and a beanie that's slightly too tight (bonus: it gives you a facelift). If you can still move your arms freely, you're doing it wrong. Buy one hot water bottle. Or seven. Tuck them under the duvet like warm, squishy landmines of joy. Pro tip: name them. That way, when you say, 'I'm going to bed with Gerald tonight,' it doesn't sound quite as sad. Why change out of your blanket if society has already broken down after Covid? Wrap it around your shoulders and call it a fashion statement. Bonus points if you belt it and pretend you're in Game of Thrones. Tea. Coffee. More tea. Hot chocolate. Rooibos. Cup-a-Soup. Repeat until your blood is 60% warm beverage. Warning: your bladder will revolt. ALSO READ: Gauteng braces for coldest day of the year with freezing temperatures Have you considered sitting directly on your oven? Don't. But you can bake something unnecessarily elaborate, purely for the heat. Think lasagne, banana bread, or the sourdough ingredients you never finished during lockdown. Just leave the oven door open afterward and bask like a budget lizard. Cats, dogs, toddlers – all make excellent heat sources. Bonus: they don't complain if you stick your freezing toes under them (well, maybe the toddler). If no pet is available, find a partner. Or a friend. Or a stranger at Pick n Pay. Desperate times. Then there's denial. This is a surprisingly effective method. Just pretend it's not cold. Wear shorts. Eat ice cream. Tell people you 'actually prefer winter'. Shiver internally. Cry a little. You'll be fine. You don't need fancy heaters or triple-glazed windows. You just need creativity, caffeine and a high pain threshold. South African winter doesn't last long, but while it's here, it will test your resolve, your plumbing, and your ability to make a fire with damp firewood. Stay warm, stay ridiculous, and remember: if you can survive July in Jozi, you can survive anything. PS: If all else fails, emigrate to Durban. 8-hour power outage to affect 12 areas in Johannesburg

The city of Johannesburg has announced that an 8-hour power outage is set to affect 12 areas. The power outage will occur on Saturday, 18 June 2025, at Olivedale Substation. The power utility stated that the interruption is necessary to perform maintenance work on its electricity network, thereby providing better service to its customers. Here's a list of the areas that will be affected by the power outage on Saturday, 18 June 2025 from 9:00 to 17:00: Mapel drive Northworld First Street Northworld Dirk Street Northworld Paul Street Northworld Lima Street Third Avenue Northworld Fourth Avenue Golden Harvest Fifth Street Sharonlea Fountain Street Sonneglans Beesvyie Street Sharonlea Ululupa Sharonlea LA province Sharonlea City Power is urging customers to use electricity wisely, as a cold front is sweeping through the Gauteng province, with temperatures expected to last for several days. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) mentioned that temperatures are likely to drop below freezing point in parts of the province. The extreme cold weather conditions are also expected to increase electricity usage, putting a strain on the electricity network. City Power stated that the use of electricity appliances like heaters and electric blankets to keep warm may overload the infrastructure. 'We appeal to residents and businesses to help us reduce the pressure on the grid by using electricity efficiently and adopting alternative ways to stay warm,' said City Power.
