Diogo Jota's heartbroken family wipe away tears after tribute to late star
The magnificent tribute in the south bank featured a colossal image of Jota celebrating a goal during his spell as a Wolves player - when he spearheaded their Championship triumph and promotion, followed by consecutive seventh-place Premier League campaigns. Adjacent to the tifo, a banner was displayed on the pitch bearing the message: "We'll remember you when you walk in fields of gold."
Jota's wife, Rute Cardoso, attended the fixture alongside Ruben Neves, Jota's former Wolves and Portugal teammate and one of his dearest friends, who also served as a pallbearer at his funeral following his heartbreaking death last month.
The parents of Jota and Andre Silva, who died alongside his brother in the car crash in Spain, were also in attendance for the match. Like Jota's wife, Isabel and Joaquim Silva were visibly emotional.
When the clock reached the 18-minute mark during the encounter, fans throughout the stadium rose and applauded for 60 seconds in tribute to Jota, who wore the No. 18 jersey for Wolves during his time in the Black Country, reports the Mirror. Jota transferred to Liverpool from Wolves in 2020, spending five years at Anfield, and Liverpool's Premier League curtain-raiser against Bournemouth on Friday also included numerous tributes to Jota. Liverpool boss Arne Slot confessed after the match that he desperately wished he could have turned to Jota from the bench whilst his team hunted for a winner.
"Normally at 2-2 everyone knows which player I look to at that moment in time," Slot revealed. "I would have loved to bring in Diogo Jota, but I could not for terrible reasons. But tonight the fans and the players did what he did for us many times in the past." Wolves paid tribute to Diogo Jota (Image: 2025 Catherine Ivill - AMA)
Match hero Federico Chiesa, who netted Liverpool's decisive strike to seal a 3-2 triumph, also honoured Jota during his post-match chat, declaring: "[The goal] was a great moment for me, but my thoughts go to Diogo.
"I think for what we have seen it was his day. The feeling that the fans gave me, chanting his song all the way through the match. It was very emotional, very emotional for me. I have to say that after the goal my thoughts went to his family, his brother Andre. That's the only thing I could say.
"At the end of the day we have to focus on the football. We wanted to win today. It was a difficult match, we went 2-0 up and then they came back, but we showed why we are champions.
"Of course Diogo would have helped us a lot but unfortunately he was somewhere else and he helped us in another way."

The two giants collided at Old Trafford on Sunday with plenty of new signings on show. 1 Fans spotted Arsenal's sneaky new tactic against Manchester United But there was also a fresh rule implemented in the game which had a major effect on Mikel Arteta's game plan. Under new legislation, goalkeepers are now required to release the ball after eight seconds or less. Should a stopper hang on to it for longer, the opposing team is awarded a corner. And set-piece king Arteta showed he was ready to immediately manipulate the rule with a cheeky new tactic. Arsenal have scored 31 Prem goals from corners since the start of the 2023/24 season – 11 more than next nearest side Liverpool. Underwhelming Chelsea settle for draw against Palace draw at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea made an underwhelming start to the Premier League season as Crystal Palace ground out a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge. After a truncated pre-season following victory in the Club World Cup, everything pointed to a Chelsea side lacking both preparation and rest as Oliver Glasner's team coped relative easily with a new-look yet disjointed attack. Eberechi Eze started for Palace despite speculation he is about to leave and, if there were doubts about how supporters felt about the player whose goal won them the FA Cup in May, they were dispelled when he was substituted to a standing ovation late on. The England international provided the game with its only major talking point, lashing in a brilliant free-kick in the first half that was ruled out after Marc Guehi obstructed Chelsea's wall, drawing a furious response from Palace fans. As expected, Nicolas Jackson was not in Enzo Maresca's squad after being made surplus to requirements, with Newcastle considering a bid, while Joao Pedro was preferred at number nine to fellow new signing Liam Delap. Chelsea were playing 35 days after their win over Paris St Germain in the Club World Cup final in the United States and showed signs of mental fatigue in a first-half display low on creativity. Marc Cucurella had the first of their only two chances, his near-post header looping towards the far corner where it was nodded off the line by the leaping Ismaila Sarr. Eze looked to have obliged the headline writers after 15 minutes with an unstoppable free-kick that flew through the middle of the Chelsea wall and in, only for a VAR check to reveal Guehi had unfairly forced Moises Caicedo out of the ball's path. Moments later Jean-Philippe Mateta broke into the box but shot too close to Robert Sanchez, who bounced the effort to safety. There was little worthy of home fans' enthusiasm in attack in the first half, but they showed raucous appreciation for a wonderfully-timed, full-blooded tackle on Daniel Munoz by 19-year-old Josh Acheampong, making a third Premier League start in central defence, with Levi Colwill a long-term absentee and Wesley Fofana not risked. With Maresca having been told to seek internal solutions to his lack of defensive options, the academy graduate staked a convincing claim for regular game time with a display of maturity and fulsome grit that was warmly received by an otherwise subdued crowd. The best Chelsea chance of the half fell to Trevoh Chalobah, who fired high from eight yards after good work from debutant Jamie Gittens. Estevao Willian came on in the 53rd minute for a debut and, with his first action, breezed past Guehi in a foot race down the right before crossing brilliantly for Enzo Fernandez, who failed to make good contact. The Brazil international, still only 18 despite the hype surrounding his arrival from Palmeiras, betrayed his inexperience minutes later when striking wildly over the bar when off balance before being booked for lunging at Munoz. Eze was again almost the story when he drilled at goal and brought a two-handed save from Sanchez, then at the other end substitute Delap shot straight at Dean Henderson.
