Bumrah's omission was pre-planned, as India had earlier announced he would only play three matches in the series due to his back injury concerns. The 31-year-old completed his third appearance in the drawn Old Trafford Test last week, where he bowled 33 overs and conceded 100 runs while taking two wickets.

The demanding schedule of five Tests in 44 days has impacted both teams significantly. India brought in Akash Deep, who claimed 10 wickets in the Edgbaston victory, and Prasidh Krishna to replace Bumrah and Anshul Kamboj in the pace department.
India made two additional changes, with Karun Nair replacing all-rounder Shardul Thakur and Dhruv Jurel taking over wicketkeeping duties from Rishabh Pant, who suffered a broken foot while batting in Manchester.

Kuldeep travelled to England for a five-match Test series but didn't feature in a single match, which drew some flak. The left-arm spinner made his Test debut in 2017, but since then, he has played only 13 matches. He last played a red-ball match for India against New Zealand in 2024.
