Each food plate at Chowmahalla Palace costs ₹8,200 not ₹1 lakh: Tourism Minister addresses allegations on Miss World contest

The Hindu03-06-2025
Only ₹30 crore was spent for the Miss World 2025 beauty pageant, with Telangana government's spending only ₹9 crore and the balance ₹21 crore was paid by sponsors, said Tourism Minister Jupally Krishna Rao challenging the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders K.T. Rama Rao and T. Harish Rao to prove the allegation that ₹200 crore was spent for the contest.
At a press conference held at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Telangana State Secretariat in Hyderabad on Tuesday (June 3, 2025), the Minister condemned the allegations by Miss England 2024 Milla Magee that she was subjected to inappropriate behaviour. Mr. Rao said that 'there is no truth in her allegations'. If the contestants were indeed made to feel uncomfortable, as alleged by Ms. Milla Magee, the other contestants would not stayed till the end, he said.
He refuted another allegation that the contestants were given 30 tolas of gold. The contestants were taken to Chowmahalla Palace on May 13 where they had dinner. The Tourism Minister said that each plate of food there costs ₹8,200 but not ₹1 lakh.

BRS's ‘BC Kadhana Bheri' meeting postponed again due to heavy rain forecast

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS)'s public meeting christened as 'BC Kadhana Bheri' scheduled to be held in Karimnagar on August 14 has been postponed due to forecast of heavy rains in the erstwhile Karimnagar district and elsewhere in the State in the next three days. The party leadership has chosen Karimnagar, the political nerve centre of north Telangana, for its 'BC Kadhana Bheri' to galvanise Backward Class (BC) communities to mount pressure on the government to implement the 42% reservations for BCs. New date of the public meeting will be decided by the BRS leadership in due course, the party sources said. It was originally scheduled for August 8 in Karimnagar. Inclement weather forced the organisers to postpone the meeting to August 14. The meeting has been postponed twice within a week.

BJP condemns party chief's ‘house arrest'

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly condemned the house arrest of its State president N. Ramchander Rao which prevented him from participating in the party's scheduled 'Hoist the National Tricolour' campaign at households as part of Independence Day celebrations on Tuesday morning. Mr. Rao was slated to attend a series of programmes in the Secunderabad and Goshamahal constituencies. However, a group of policemen arrived at his Tarnaka residence and placed him under house arrest, anticipating his participation in a programme organized by the BJP women's wing at Peddamma Temple in Jubilee Hills. This action sparked widespread criticism from party leaders, including Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar, Mahabubnagar MP D.K. Aruna, former MLA N.V.S.S. Prabhakar, General Secretary K. Venkateshwarlu, Chief Spokesperson N.V. Subash, Women's Wing President Dr. Shilpa Reddy, and several others. Despite being occupied with the Parliament session in Delhi, Mr. Sanjay Kumar accused the Congress-led state government of orchestrating a conspiracy to secure votes from a particular community ahead of the upcoming Jubilee Hills by-election. 'The government is playing politics with Hindu sentiments for the sake of votes from one community. Even though our party chief had no plans to visit the Peddamma Temple, he was arrested,' he said, questioning whether visiting a temple was now considered a crime. Mr. Prabhakar alleged that the current government was continuing the 'vote bank politics' of the BRS regime by restricting the majority community's access to temples and religious practices. 'This goes against the principles of democracy and the fundamental rights of citizens,' he said. Mr. Subash also accused the State government of attempting to silence opposition voices through illegal arrests. 'Just as the people of Telangana rejected the BRS, the Revanth Reddy government is likely to face a similar fate,' he warned. The BJP clarified that its campaign aimed to honour the national flag and commemorate the sacrifices of freedom fighters, and was not directed against the State government. The party warned of Statewide protests if such actions continued. Meanwhile, Dr. Shilpa Reddy criticized the police for indiscriminately arresting members of the women's wing and preventing them from conducting a 'spiritual' programme at the Peddamma Temple. 'In a democracy, everyone has the right to religious expression. The government is trying to usurp these rights,' she said.

BRS leader K T Rama Rao serves legal notice to Union Minister Sanjay Kumar

'At the outset, our client states that allegations made by you (Sanjay Kumar) are misplaced without proof and reek of your malafide intention to tarnish the reputation, image and goodwill of our client,' the lawyer said in the notice, which was released to the media on Tuesday. In the notice, dated August 11, Rama Rao's lawyer alleged that Sanjay Kumar, Union Minister of State for Home, made false, defamatory and slanderous statements implying that his client (Rama Rao) committed 'phone tapping'. Hyderabad, Aug 12 (PTI) BRS Working President K T Rama Rao has sent a legal notice to Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar for allegedly making defamatory comments against him over the case of 'illegal phone tapping' during the previous BRS government. Sanjay Kumar's intentions are clear that the defamatory statements are made to further his political gains at the cost of Rama Rao's reputation and goodwill, the notice said. The notice asked Kumar to tender an unconditional apology to the BRS Working President and to refrain from engaging in any alleged further malicious or frivolous defamatory acts against the latter and his family members. The notice said Rama Rao would be constrained to initiate legal action against Kumar, including but not limited to civil and criminal, if he failed to comply with the demand to tender an unconditional apology within seven days of receipt of the notice. Sanjay Kumar, who appeared as a witness before the SIT in the illegal phone tapping case in Telangana, on August 8, called for the investigation to be transferred to the CBI. The Union Minister hit out at former Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and also Rama Rao on the allegations of phone-tapping, claiming that his phone was tapped by following the procedure used for surveillance of Maoist activities. The BRS leader and Sanjay Kumar were engaged in a war of words on August 8 following the latter's allegations. Demanding a public apology, Rama Rao had said a legal notice was being served. Responding to Rama Rao's threat of legal notice, the Union Minister had said he won't fall for such 'monkey tricks' and dared the former to 'bring it on'.
