Metro passenger's warning over 'devious' scammers
A victim of a social media scam claiming to offer free public transport has said fraudsters tried to take money out of her account for three months. Patricia Daglish, from Gateshead, made a purchase from the fraudulent page, which promised six months of unlimited free travel in the Newcastle area with a £2 Pop Pay As You Go (PAYG) card. She said she thought it was "too good to be true", but initially believed the advert came from an official Tyne and Wear Metro Facebook page. Metro operator Nexus said it had reported the scam page - which gets taken down but then appears again with a new name - dozens of times. Facebook has been approached for a comment.
"We have reported this to Meta numerous times. We're aware that other transport operators across in the UK have been targeted by what looks like the same scammers," Nexus said."Our customers are advised that this is a scam website and they should not engage with it. This is not connected in any way with Tyne and Wear Metro, or Nexus, and we do not endorse its content."
Since September, there have been a number of warnings from Nexus about the fraudulent page, which features photos of Tyne and Wear Metro, buses and the Shields ferry.Ms Daglish, 64, said there were also comments on it from people claiming they received the card and saying it was a great deal - but these were also fake. "Stupidly, I thought I'm going to try it," she said.
'Total, absolute scam'
Days after the initial payment of £2.35, fraudsters tried to take out about £49.99.Ms Daglish said she used a Zing card for the initial payment and had put only £3 on it.Subsequent scam payments failed because there was not enough money, and Ms Daglish cancelled the card - which was used in the euro currency for trips abroad - straight away.But, she said, despite the cancellation there were about nine attempts to take money out of the invalid card between the end of September and Christmas Day, for random sums ranging from about €9.99 to €49.99."I was very mad. I thought 'I cannot believe that I fell for something so stupid'," Ms Daglish said."I haven't seen the page for about two months now, but I can guarantee they are still doing it."It's a total, absolute scam and I don't know how the Metro can stop it, I don't know whose problem is it, but people must be getting money taken out of their bank accounts."Ms Daglish only lost the initial £2.35 but said she was worried of more scams in the future."I don't know who they are and how they get away with it. It's disgraceful," she said."They're very clever, they're very devious."Nexus advised customers to be vigilant "with any rogue social media page or website pretending to sell travel passes" and to report it to Nexus and Facebook.

The Department of Homeland Security has revealed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) personnel will provide security at the game. On its Facebook account, CBP posted last week: 'Let the games begin. "The first #FIFAClubWorldCup games start on June 14th in Miami, FL at the Hard Rock Stadium. "CBP will be suited and booted and ready to provide security for the first round of games. #CBPxFIFA #FootballUnitesTheWorld.' The post has since been deleted. However, NBC said the post had prompted questions about whether the presence of federal agents was "just part of the overall security team, which is normal for a big event?" This follows demonstrations nationwide, including Dallas and Austin in Texas, and Chicago and New York, after federal immigration raids arrested dozens of workers in Los Angeles. It also comes as Donald Trump continues his huge immigration crackdown and travel ban. And Vice President JD Vance last month warned World Cup travellers not to overstay their welcome. The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will see the World's best players decide which club is the greatest The broadcaster said it was not clear whether the agents will also be checking papers and detaining fans arriving for the game. FIFA today held a press conference to publicise the Club World Cup - the winning side of which will earn up to $125 million. NBC noted, "It's obvious that Fifa would rather focus on the games instead of outside issues." FIFA president Gianni Infantino urged fans to buy tickets despite concerns about the presence of federal agents. He told fans, 'Be part of history, football is such an important sport all over the world. we'll have billions of people watching this from home who would love to come and attend.' BOOSTING SECURITY Infantino was asked whether he had any concerns about ICE and border officials being present at the games. He replied, 'No I don't have any concerns on anything in the sense that we are very attentive on any security questions. "Most important for us is to guarantee security for our fans who will come to the games, this is our priority.' The station stressed that it is normal for local police to partner with federal counterparts and law enforcement agents to provide security at big events. The broadcaster said it had spoken to ICE agents - who had confirmed its officials will be at the games - to provide security. NBC - citing ICE advice - told viewers intending on attending games that all non-American citizens need to carry proof of their legal status. This is particularly vital after the debacle last year, when 7,000 unticketed supporters broke into the Copa America final. Some fans climbed over fences, while others were incredibly seen trying to enter via a ventilation system at the Hard Rock Stadium. More on the Club World Cup 2025 The Club World Cup 2025 will begin on Sunday, June 15, in the UK and Saturday, June 14, in the US. The tournament will run until Sunday, July 13. It is being held across 12 different cities and stadiums in the United States. The whole tournament will be broadcast by DAZN in the UK and US. Matches can be watched on DAZN TV or via the website/app. In the UK, Channel 5 will also air select games on terrestrial TV. But, Thomas Kennedy of the Florida Immigrant Coalition said the federal agents' now-deleted social media warning had caused confusion. He said, 'The messaging that CBP is using is a bit cryptic. "It's sort of alluding that people should have their paperwork in order to attend the games. 'It creates an environment where people are less likely to come watch the games because of just sheer intimidation.' When asked about the security arrangement, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said, 'We're here to make sure people are safe, that's our focus, to work with all of the law enforcement personnel, our safety personnel, and make sure they have a seamless experience."

Vicki takes action to keep EastEnders abuser Joel out of jail after assault
Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig) makes it her mission to protect Joel Marshall (Max Murray) after his commits another sex offence in EastEnders next week. As viewers of the BBC One soap have seen, Joel is deeply troubled, and is the reason his family were forced to flee from Australia. After upskirting a school mate, his dad Ross (Alex Walkinshaw) coughed up a whopping $50,000 to keep the girl's silence, but her family also demanded that they leave the country. Since settling in Walford, it seems that his behaviour hasn't changed. Not only has he introduced naïve Tommy Moon (Sonny Kendall) to pornography, but he also decided to record sexual content of his own. Growing closer to Avani Nandra-Hart (Aaliyah James), he secretly filmed them having sex – a video which a horrified Ross later discovered on his son's phone. In upcoming scenes, his behaviour worsens, despite demands from both Ross and Vicki for him to change his ways. Having spent the day with Tommy, the lads board an underground train and Joel decides to entwine him further into a web of misbehaviour. He pulls out his phone, and instructs Tommy to start recording. Stumbling through the carriage, he pretends to fall on a fellow passenger named Isla, who he goes onto touch inappropriately. Tommy is stunned by what he sees, as a terrified Isla rushes to report him to the police that are present in the tube station. Joel is apprehended and hauled in for questioning – just as Ross and Vicki witness what is happening. Down at the cop shop, Ross demands answers from the teen, as Vicki corners Isla and tries to comfort her. Vicki is supportive of the girl's decision to report Joel, and hopes that it will be the kick he needs to stop his alarming behaviour patterns. She then passes on her number in case she needs anything further from the family. Later that night, she comes up with a cunning plan, inspired by Ross' actions Down Under. Homes evacuated and man arrested after 'bomb found near Post Office'
Homes have been evacuated and roads closed in a Welsh town centre after reports of an 'active bomb' near a Post Office. A bomb squad was dispatched to a residential street New Dock Road in Llanelli, 11 miles north-west of Swansea. Officers have set up a cordon on five roads around the Post Office, which locals said was busy with police activity since this morning. Explosive ordnance disposal experts were called in and five roads have been cordoned off. Multiple locals told Metro they had heard reports of a 'bomb'. Officers arrived shortly after 6pm and set up a rest centre at Llanelli Leisure Centre for impacted residents. Dog groomer Georgia Fuller, who was evacuated from New Dock Road, claimed to Metro that police had said there was an 'active bomb' by the 'post office'. She added: 'It is not nice, they have cordoned all the roads off, it is a bit scary.' Another local told Metro that people are being evacuated after 'explosives' were found nearby. More Trending They added: 'It is really busy at the moment. They are evacuating the street. Everyone is saying different things at the moment.' A 57-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of offences under The Explosive Substances Act and is currently in police custody. Dyfed-Powys Police said on X: 'We are carrying out a warrant at New Dock Road, Llanelli. A 100m cordon is currently in place for public safety. EOD (explosive ordnance disposal) is on their way.
