Australia bracing for ‘full strength' T20 World Cup champions New Zealand
Featuring the last two winners of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup, the series offers an opportunity to iron out their teams in the shortest format with one eye on the next edition of the tournament in 2026.
'I think they (fixtures) are really important. We're coming off the back of a successful series but we want to finish off the season really well,' Australia head coach Shelley Nitschke said.
'There are only nine T20Is between now and the next T20 World Cup. So when you start to break it up like that, every opportunity you get to play in that format is going to be really valuable for us.'
Nitschke added that the White Ferns will offer a stern challenge with the return of Sophie Devine, Melie Kerr and Lea Tahuhu in the T20I squad. ALSO READ - Star players return as White Ferns name squad for Australia T20Is
'They're gonna be coming at us pretty hard. They're the T20 World Cup champions... they're back to full strength. Sophie (Devine) comes back in. So it should be a really exciting contest,' she said.
While Australia are coming into the series on the back of an Ashes series sweep against England at home, New Zealand played a 1-1 stalemate against Sri Lanka in the recent three-match T20I series. WATCH: New Zealand win the T20 World Cup | Final | WT20WC 2024
For Australia, Beth Mooney is approaching a major milestone – her 200th international appearance for the national team.
Gushing praise of the wicketkeeper-batter, Nitschke added, 'Moons has been really amazing with her consistency. That amount of time – 200 games – is such a fantastic feat.
'I think just the way the game has changed and Moons just keeps churning out the runs in all formats as well. She's just topped up a ton in Test match as well.
'To be so consistent with what she does in all three formats, she continues to evolve and change. I think that's a massive effort. It's really a special day for her.'

New Zealand take handy lead over Zimbabwe in first Test
New Zealand were in firm control after taking a 158-run lead over Zimbabwe after the first innings on Thursday and then making inroads into their hosts' batting on the second day of the first Test at Queens Sports Club. New Zealand resumed overnight on 92-0 and eased past Zimbabwe's first innings total of 149 before their innings ended on 307-9, with all-rounder Nathan Smith retiring hurt with an abdominal strain. Zimbabwe, who then had to face 13 overs in the final session on Thursday, lost openers Ben Curran and Brian Bennett cheaply and were 31-2 at the close, still trailing by 127 runs. Opener Devon Conway top-scored for New Zealand with 88 but went early after lunch as he cut a sharply rising delivery from Tanaka Chivanga to Brian Bennett in the gully. Daryl Mitchell was bowled for 80 by Newman Nyamhuri, the last wicket to fall as New Zealand added 215 to their overnight score for a significant lead on a testing pitch. Will Young had been dismissed first ball of the day for 41 by Blessing Muzarabani, who returned Zimbabwe's best bowling figures of 3-73 off 26 overs. Henry Nicholls scored 34 while Smith made 22 before being forced from the crease in obvious pain. Zimbabwe will resume on Friday with Nick Welch (2 not out) and Vincent Masekesa, who had yet to score, at the crease.

Tsitsipas brings father back as coach after Ivanisevic split
Stefanos Tsitsipas has brought his father Apostolos back as coach after ending his brief partnership with Goran Ivanisevic, the former world number three said. Tsitsipas, 26, ended his collaboration with Ivanisevic, who helped Novak Djokovic claim nine of his 24 Grand Slam titles, last week after less than two months. Tsitsipas, the 2021 French Open and 2023 Australian Open runner-up, has tumbled to 30th in the world rankings and has failed to get beyond the second round in the first three Grand Slams of the season. Following Tsitsipas' first-round exit at Wimbledon, Ivanisevic delivered a scathing assessment of the Greek, saying he had "never seen a more unprepared player" in his life. His title win in Dubai in February is the only final he has reached in 2025. "Some journeys have a way of circling back to where they began," Tsitsipas, who lost to Christopher O'Connell in the second round of the Canadian Open on Wednesday, posted on social media. "After some time apart, I've reunited with the person who first believed in me - my father. "I'm grateful to share the court and the road ahead with him once again. We've been through every chapter of this journey together, and this next one feels right.

Lyon puts pressure on England spinners ahead of Ashes series ICC World Test Championship
It's the second time recently that Lyon has delved into England's state of affairs, after the veteran chimed in earlier this week to provide some thoughts on the frustrating end to the fourth Test with India in Manchester that ended in a draw . While Lyon has had plenty to say about England of late, the veteran right-armer also has his own concerns to consider after he was left out of Australia's side for their most recent Test match against the West Indies in Jamaica. The reigning World Test Championship runners up opted for an all-out pace attack for the day-night contest and were rewarded for their bold ploy by recording an emphatic 176-run victory at Sabina Park , but Lyon expects conditions to be vastly different on home soil during the Ashes and is keen to see how England's spin attack perform. "It is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for people who haven't done it in the past in these conditions," Lyon said. "But I'm not going to let my secrets out so they come out and perform well out here. Our guys know how to play spin really well in this country. That's probably what helped me produce my skill to where it is at the moment. I know I'll keep trying getting better, and we'll see how their spinners go."
