The Pirates fan who fell from the 21-foot Clemente Wall in right field at PNC Park in Pittsburgh has been identified, as a community leader says he is "fighting for his life."
Kavan Markwood, 20, was critically injured after he fell from the bleachers and landed on the warning track during Wednesday's Pirates-Cubs game, officials said.
"There are some positive signs that were shared with me that he is responding to, but he's fighting for his life right now," South Allegheny School District Superintendent David McDonald told KDKA on Thursday.
Kavan Markwood identified as fan who fell
Markwood graduated from South Allegheny High School in 2022, a district spokesperson confirmed on Thursday.
In a statement, the district spokesperson said Markwood "made a lasting impact on the South Allegheny community" while he was a student.

Markwood played football for the Gladiators and was named team MVP as a senior. He also took home all-conference honors. He went on to play football at Walsh University in Ohio before enrolling at Wheeling University in West Virginia.
"Kavan is best known for his resilience, strength, and kindness," the district spokesperson said. "He is a friend to all—someone who lifts others up and faces challenges with courage and grace."
McDonald said Markwood is "just a good, solid young man."
"If there is somebody who going to be able to overcome this, it's going to be Kavan Markwood because he's a tough kid," he said. "He's a fighter. He's proven that for 21 years to get to the point where he is now, and we need to rally around Kavan."
Fan in critical condition after accidental fall at PNC Park
Pittsburgh Public Safety said in an update on Thursday that it is treating the fall as "accidental in nature."
On Thursday, Pirates Chairman Bob Nutting released a statement that said, in part: "We are all deeply saddened and truly heartbroken after the terrible accident that occurred last night. It was one of the most difficult moments many of us have ever experienced."
Markwood fell moments after the Pirates' Andrew McCutchen hit an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning on Wednesday. Markwood was taken to a hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment. He remained in critical condition on Thursday.

Sources told KDKA that Markwood, who was at the baseball game with his best friend and girlfriend, fractured his skull. Markwood's friend jumped onto the field from the stands after the fall.
"Kavan is at a baseball game with some friends, rooting for the Bucs and having fun at a game with friends. (McCutchen) hits a double and he jumps up and he's excited, and a horrible thing happened," McDonald said.
McDonald says Markwood had just gotten a job in insurance and was set to start taking certification classes.
"He is really a success story from the standpoint of his mental toughness, his personal toughness," McDonald said. "But he's got a chipped front tooth and when he smiled at you, he had that mischievous smile that melted you."

PHILADELPHIA — Phillies third baseman Otto Kemp waited. As Chicago Cubs pitcher Daniel Palencia and catcher Carson Kelly sorted out PitchCom issues. As Citizens Bank Park grew raucous around him. As Palencia reset, as Phillies teammates Bryson Stott and J.T. Realmuto inched away from their bases and closer to home and a walk-off win in Monday's 11th inning. Advertisement Really, Kemp had been waiting a while. Nearly three years to visit Citizens Bank Park after his August 2022 signing, holding off so his debut would be more meaningful. A lifetime for his major-league debut, Saturday in Pittsburgh, and perhaps just as long to lay down a good bunt. He had never bunted in a minor-league game. Had not bunted in a game, period, since playing summer ball in St. Cloud, Minn., in 2021 — a ball he popped up straight to the catcher. But the Division II player turned undrafted signee with the Phillies turned major leaguer laid one down, sending the Cubs' infield scrambling as he hustled to first to load the bases with the score 3-3. 'Just trying to get on top of it and execute,' he said. The Phillies needed someone, anyone to step up. To get out of their own way. To grind out a win and snap a five-game losing streak. It was not pretty nor easy, but it was achievable as they walked off the Cubs 4-3 in the 11th on Monday. Nine of twelve Phillies batters combined for 16 hits. Fifteen of those 16 hits were singles. The Phillies went 5-for-16 with runners in scoring position, a category they sit 29th in the majors in this month, but they prevailed. 'We had 19 base runners tonight and scored (four) runs,' manager Rob Thomson said. 'That's kind of hard to do. But I did like our at-bats a lot.' Back-to-back bunts in the 11th and a Brandon Marsh game-winning hit saved a rollercoaster night for an offense that seemingly couldn't get out of its own way. Edmundo Sosa and Nick Castellanos tried to turn surefire singles into doubles on the basepaths six innings apart. The Cubs easily tagged out both at second. Trea Turner couldn't make his way back to first in time in the third, a pickoff that ended the inning. The at-bats took time to come together, too. The Phillies loaded the bases in the fourth but only scored one run as two ground-ball outs followed — including one off a first pitch. Outside changeups became easily fielded grounders in the sixth. A three-pitch strikeout in the seventh had Alec Bohm slamming his bat and spiking his helmet into fragments. Advertisement Some signs of life for the Phillies' offense provided a respite. With Bryce Harper on the injured list with right wrist pain, it's going to take everyone. The Phillies embraced that Monday. Weston Wilson had his first hit since May 23. Marsh, who entered Monday batting .216 with a .638 OPS, found some joy with his first career walk-off hit. And perhaps no one understood the assignment better than Kemp, who went hitless in his first two major-league games after slashing .313/.416/.594 with a 1.010 OPS for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The boos ricocheted around the ballpark when he committed an error in the second, losing a ball in the lights and allowing Kelly to reach base. Two innings later, he was careening toward the ground, arm extended, to catch a Dansby Swanson line-out. Then came his first career hit — and a wild trip to from first to third on a failed pickoff — and the second, the third soon followed. Kemp rode out the error, rough at-bats in his first MLB game, facing Pirates ace Paul Skenes in his second. Going undrafted out of Point Loma Nazarene University, practicing bunting over the past few days after not doing so in a game in years, even getting lost before Realmuto helped him find the clubhouse Monday. He did it. 'It's unbelievable, the energy that I felt today, support from all these fans,' Kemp said. 'The buzz is crazy. That was another reason why I didn't want to experience (Citizens Bank Park) before the first big-league game.' The boos seem a lot smaller when the crowd is frantic over a bases-loaded, walk-off win. So, too, do the Phillies' recent woes, when you're staring at sparkling stadium lights. It was just one game. Seattle fills out forward group, while Vancouver emphasizes defense following PWHL expansion draft
PWHL Seattle GM Meghan Turner can already envision having her top two lines in place with a group of forwards led by Hilary Knight. In Vancouver, general manager Cara Gardner Morey's emphasis was defense first. The league's two newest teams took distinct approaches in continuing to build their respective identities during the league's seven-round expansion draft on Monday night. The draft followed the PWHL's five-day exclusive signing period in which both teams signed their allowed maximum of five players. Though Vancouver used five of its seven selections on forwards, Gardner Morey opened the draft by choosing Ottawa defenseman Ashton Bell with the No. 1 pick. Bell and Boston's Sydney Bard, selected 13th on Monday, join a talented blueline that already includes the former Minnesota tandem of Claire Thompson and Sophie Jaques, who signed with Vancouver last week. 'I was a defender and I really think it's such a valuable position, and finding the right D and having a great core, one through eight even, is what makes championship teams,' said Gardner Morey, who is also set in net with the signing of Ottawa goalie Emerance Maschmeyer. In Seattle, Turner used the No. 2 pick on selecting Ottawa defenseman Aneta Tejralová. She then chose forwards with Seattle's next three selections in picking Boston's Hannah Bilka, New York's Jessie Eldridge and Toronto's Julia Gosling. The trio join a forward group that already features Knight, Alex Carpenter and Danielle Serdachny, who were signed last week. Seattle's initial 12-player roster features a mix of leadership in veterans Knight and Carpenter and emerging youth with four of six players selected in the first round of last year's draft in Serdachny (selected second), Bilka (fourth), defenseman Cayla Barnes (fifth) and Gosling (sixth). 'I'm really excited for these younger players to be able to learn from truly some of the best in the game in terms of Alex Carpenter and Hilary Knight,' Turner said of the two long-time U.S. national team stars. 'I don't know if I was specifically forward-minded, but it's hard to pass up the three that I did sign.' Both expansion franchises are working under the same salary-cap restrictions as the league's other six teams, though the PWHL does not reveal player salaries. And both enjoy an advantageous head start with the league limiting existing teams to initially protecting only three players, before allowed to add a fourth player to the list after a team loses two from its roster. Each of the existing teams lost four players apiece, with the rules favoring the expansion teams by allowing them to be competitive from the start of the PWHL's third season, expected to open in November. Seattle's lineup features plenty of offense. Knight, a four-time Olympian, is an PWHL MVP finalist this year after finishing tied for the league lead with 29 points. Carpenter was an MVP finalist in 2024, when she finished tied for second with 23 points. And Eldridge, this season, finished tied for fifth in the league with 24 points (nine goals, 15 assists). Vancouver earned the first pick after winning a ball drawing. Both teams then alternated in having two picks each before Seattle closed the draft by selecting Boston defenseman Emily Brown 14th. Turner split her picks in selecting three forwards and four defensemen, rounded out by Montreal's Anna Wilgren and Toronto's Megan Carter. Vancouver chose two defenseman and five forwards, including Toronto's Izzy Daniel, who closed her senior season at Cornell in being selected the 2024 Patty Kazmaier award winner as women's hockey MVP. Daniel joins former Toronto teammate Sarah Nurse, who signed with Vancouver last week. Joining Thompson and Jaques in Vancouver are two more members of the two-time defending champion Minnesota Frost in forwards Brooke McQuigge and Denisa Krizova. Vancouver also drafted Montreal forward Abby Boreen and New York forward Gabby Rosenthal.
