The couple are being probed by two separate special prosecutors appointed after the former leader was ousted over his brief declaration of martial law that triggered six months of political crisis and social upheaval. Kim appeared for questioning on Wednesday at the office of the special prosecutor on charges that include stock fraud, bribery and illegal influence peddling. She apologised for causing concern but did not answer questions from reporters about the allegations.
Oh Jeong-hee, a prosecutor acting as spokesperson for the special prosecutor's team, mentioned three criminal statutes listed on the court warrant request that cover the allegations against Kim but did not give details of the charges. Seoul, South Korea – South Korea's former first lady Kim Keon Hee became the first in the country's history to be arrested. The charges against the wife of impeached president Yoon Suk Yeol include stock fraud, bribery and influence peddling, charges punishable by years in prison. The 52-year-old has denied the accusations against her, according to a special prosecutor leading the investigation. Kim underwent hours-long questioning last week, with the prosecutors filing for her arrest warrant the day afterwards. 'I sincerely apologise for causing trouble despite being a person of no importance,' Kim said upon arrival at the prosecutors' office. The allegations against Kim One of the charges against Kim came as a result of an incident in 2022, when she attended a NATO summit with her husband wearing a luxury Van Cleef pendant reportedly worth US$43,000. The item was not listed in the couple's financial disclosure as the local law requires. Kim said the luxury pendant was a fake bought 20 years ago in Hong Kong, with the prosecution found that the piece of jewellery was in fact genuine. Additionally, Kim is accused of receiving two Chanel bags valued at US$14,500, as well as a diamond necklace, as a bribe from a religious group in return for influence regarding the group's business interests. The prosecution ordered that Kim be arrested due to fears she would destroy evidence and interfere with the investigation, the spokesperson said. Kim's husband Yoon, too, faces trial following his ouster in April due to a failed bid to impose martial law in South Korea. His insurrection charges could be punished by life in jail or even a death sentence. DW

Israel bombards Gaza City
Israeli planes and tanks kept bombarding eastern areas of Gaza City overnight, killing at least 11 people, witnesses and medics said on Tuesday, with Hamas leader Khalil al Hayya due in Cairo for talks to revive a US-backed ceasefire plan. The latest round of indirect talks in Qatar ended in deadlock in late July with Israel and Hamas trading blame over the lack of progress on a US proposal for a 60-day truce and a deal to release captives. Israel has since said it will launch a new offensive and seize control of Gaza City, which it captured shortly after the war's outbreak in October 2023 before pulling out. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plan to expand military control over Gaza, expected to be launched in October, has increased a global outcry over the widespread devastation, displacement and hunger afflicting Gaza's 2.2 million people. It has also stirred criticism in Israel, with the military chief of staff warning it could endanger surviving captives and prove a death trap for Israeli soldiers. It has also raised fears of further displacement and hardship among the estimated one million Palestinians in the Gaza City region. Foreign ministers of 24 countries including Britain, Canada, Australia, France and Japan, said on Tuesday the humanitarian crisis in Gaza had reached "unimaginable levels" and urged Israel to allow unrestricted aid into the enclave. A Palestinian official with knowledge of the mediated ceasefire talks said Hamas was prepared to return to the negotiating table and the leaders who were visiting Cairo on Tuesday would reaffirm that stance. "Hamas believes negotiation is the only way to end the war and is open to discuss any ideas that would secure an end to the war", the official, who asked not to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter, said. Egypt's state-affiliated Al Qahera News television said the Hamas delegates have arrived in Egypt "for consultations on ceasefire talks". However, the gaps between the sides appear to remain wide on key issues, including the extent of any Israeli military withdrawal and demands for Hamas to disarm. — Reuters
