3A district semis: Lincoln comeback ‘for the city,' Auburn Mountainview beats Gig Harbor

Yahoo19-02-2025
It looked like the youth of Lincoln's roster might finally catch up to it. The Abes, who feature just two juniors and no seniors, looked frustrated against the No. 3 seed Federal Way Eagles in a 3A District 3/4 semifinal game on Tuesday night at Mount Tahoma High School.
The shots weren't falling and the calls weren't going Lincoln's way. The boiling point came when Lincoln coach Ryan Rogers received a technical foul early in the fourth quarter after bending the official's ear for several minutes on the sideline.
Federal Way led by 10 at one point late in the game. Then Lincoln dug deep, putting together stops on the defensive end and converting transition shots at the other end. Junior post Kasey Williams came up with a big 3-point play, guard O'Shea Lamar came up with a clutch steal and a pair of free throws and Lincoln completed the improbable comeback, stunning Federal Way, 57-56 to advance to the 3A District 3/4 championship game on Saturday.
'It's amazing,' said Lincoln sophomore guard Trey Collier, who scored a team-high 16 points. 'I've never heard of anybody like this, our team. Two juniors, the (oldest) we've got. We're doing it for our city so it feels great.'
Lincoln, the tournament's No. 2 seed, got production from a lot of its young roster on Tuesday: Collier led the way with 16, freshman Davion Shareef-Dulaney scored 11, Williams had 11, Lamar had eight and forward Justus Holt added eight.
'That's what makes our team so special — it's any guy's night on any given day,' Rogers said. 'We can go 10, 12 deep. … It's just a domino effect.'
It feels like Lincoln is ahead of schedule, but there's a familiarity between the players that has them playing beyond their years.
'Just our chemistry,' Collier said. 'We've known each other our whole lives. We don't let the little things get in our heads, conflict us. Just working together throughout the season, learning little things throughout the season has helped us peak at the perfect time.'
Guard Brayden McVey led Federal Way with a game-high 19 points in the loss.
Top-seeded Auburn Mountainview was on the cusp of getting knocked off by Gig Harbor in the second semifinal game at Mount Tahoma on Tuesday night. Then Sebastian Arius, this winter's 3A NPSL Most Valuable Player, took over.
He scored 17 of his game-high 24 points in the second half, including a pair of clutch 3-pointers and the go-ahead basket and free throw, to lead the Lions from behind against Gig Harbor, 67-66.
'I just couldn't let (my team) down,' Arius said. 'I led them this far and they look for me at the end of the game. I had to finish it off.'
It wasn't Arius' best shooting night from deep prior to the fourth quarter. The two 3-pointers he hit were his only two of the game. They came at an opportune time.
'It was big,' he said. 'I just gotta keep shooting at the end of the day, like my coach says. Just keep reminding me, just keep shooting and it's gonna fall eventually. It felt nice to see a couple go down.'
Junior guard Kolven Posey added 16 for the Lions. Gig Harbor 6-foot-8 forward Michael Masini led the Tides with 18 points, 15 of which he scored in the first half. Cole Browne and Ty Buchanan added 15 apiece.
Auburn Mountainview (22-1 overall) has been one of the South Sound's fun stories this year, putting together a nearly flawless season under coach Kendall White after a 14-8 campaign last year. Now, the Lions will play Tacoma's Lincoln High for the 3A District 3/4 title on Saturday.
'It's a blessing, honestly,' Arius said. 'It's really just a blessing.'

Blue Jays' John Schneider Has George Springer Message Amid Veteran's Resurgence

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Tuesday night was just the latest impressive act in an incredible turnaround season for the Toronto Blue Jays' George Springer. Springer was hit by a pitch in the top of the first inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates, perhaps as restitution for the two teams' bench-clearing incident on Monday. Instead of escalating the situation, Springer simply waited a couple of innings, then launched a home run off pitcher Mitch Keller his next time up. The blast was Springer's 20th of the season, and it set the tone for a 7-3 Blue Jays win. Toronto maintained its five-game lead atop the American League East with 35 games to play. PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - AUGUST 19: George Springer #4 of the Toronto Blue Jays celebrates his two-run home run during the second inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park on August 19, 2025 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. (Photo by)Before the season, Springer looked like an ankle weight on the Blue Jays' payroll, with two more years on his deal valued at $50 million in total. Now, he's turned the clock all the way back to his prime, when he made three All-Star appearances in a row from 2017 to 2019. Blue Jays manager John Schneider made it clear on Tuesday night that Springer's resurgence has had a massive impact on Toronto's worst-to-first turnaround from last year to this year. "He sets the tone," said Schneider, per Keegan Matheson of "Whether it's hitting home runs, grinding out at-bats, advancing on a dirt ball, scoring from first, stealing a base, he's the epitome of what we're doing. "I can't speak highly enough of him, the way he's going about this and the way other guys are responding to what he's doing." Springer is slashing .292/.383/.514 in 105 games this season, his best OPS in a season of at least 100 games since 2019, when he finished seventh in American League Most Valuable Player voting. Suddenly, it doesn't look like there's any chance Toronto will try to salary dump him ahead of the final year on his contract. The 35-year-old is the only position player on the Blue Jays' roster with a World Series ring, and he undoubtedly has plans to lead them to another. A'ja Wilson is a chaos agent in the 2025 WNBA MVP race

Las Vegas Aces forward A'ja Wilson could pull off a photo finish upset in the 2025 WNBA MVP race. For months, Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier has been arguably the best player in the league. Collier came out of the gates with intensity and helped Minnesota establish the best record in the WNBA (28-6), including winning nine straight games to open the season. The Aces? Not so much. Their slow start to the season and 11 losses before the All-Star break did them little favors. Not to mention, Wilson also had a rough start and missed several games with injuries. However, now it's Collier who's out with an injury, and her absence has left the door open for other players to creep into the MVP conversation. WNBA PLAYOFF PICTURE 2025: 6 spicy storylines as postseason nears What helps a player get MVP consideration? Averaging a double-double and ranking second in the WNBA in points per game, rebounds per game and blocks per game. Wilson also has eight matchups where she scored 30 or more points this season, including 32 points, 12 rebounds, five blocks and four assists against the Atlanta Dream Tuesday night. Not impressed? What about averaging 26.9 points, 13.1 rebounds, 1.6 steals and 1.9 blocks during the Aces' league-leading eight-game win streak? Wilson hasn't just entered the chat; she's become a full-on chaos agent in the MVP race. There's still a great chance that Collier wins the MVP race, but Wilson is causing enough commotion right now to make voters think twice about who should be MVP. If Wilson continues on her current incredible tear and Las Vegas climbs into the top-three spots in the league standings ― As of this publishing, the Aces are fifth ― she could win her *checks notes* fourth MVP award, the most in WNBA history. Don't sleep on A'ja Wilson.
