"BJP never does politics on such issues, will fully cooperate in relief activities": G Kishan Reddy on Telangana chemical factory blast
'NDRF, Police and other agencies are engaged in relief operations...Central financial assistance of Rs 2 lakhs each will be given to families of the deceased persons and Rs 50,000 to the injured,' Kishan Reddy told reporters here.
'The BJP never does politics on such issues. We will fully cooperate in relief activities...The state government should take all steps to prevent such accidents,' Reddy said.
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed grief over the blast.
'Saddened by the tragic accident in a chemical factory in Sangareddy, Telangana. The NDRF team rushed to the spot immediately and is continuing the rescue operation along with the local administration,' Amit Shah said in a post on X.
'My heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones. Praying for the swift recovery of those injured,' Shah added.
Earlier in the day, Director General of the Telangana State Disaster Response and Fire Services, Y Nagi Reddy, stated that rescue officials are currently unsure of the number of people trapped under the debris.
He added that, according to industrial experts, the blast occurred during the air handling and drying of Microcrystalline cellulose.
'Today, at around 9.48 am, there was a blast in the drying unit at Sigachi Pharma Company. The explosion led to a fire. A total of 12 people have died and 35 are injured in the incident,' Nagi Reddy told reporters after visiting the accident site.
'As per industrial experts, the incident happened during the air handling/drying of Microcrystalline cellulose. We are currently unsure of the number of people under the debris,' he added.
Rescue operations, including those by NDRF, are currently underway.
Telangana Ministers Venkatswamy and Damodar Raja Narasimha also visited the site today.
Speaking to the media, Venkatswamy said that currently, 12 people are in critical condition, whose treatment is underway.
'Nearly 63 people reported for work at this factory this morning. Initially, it was said that a reactor blast had occurred in the factory. We have just visited the site, and we now know that it was not a reactor blast,' he said.
'The factory incharge also lost his life in the accident. There is no one here who can tell what exactly happened out of the 63 people who reported here in the morning. We have learned that eight people have died. Right now, four more bodies have been recovered. Twelve people are critical with burn injuries. The remaining 22 people have 20-25% burns and are receiving treatment. We will get more clarity in the next one or two hours,' he added. (ANI)

Side hustle turns sour for Bengaluru techies as transport authority cracks down on private car rentals
Bengaluru: Instead of letting their swanky cars gather dust in basements while they worked from home, many techies in the city have hitched their vehicles to self-drive rental apps for a quick buck. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now But the wheels came off this side hustle this week when the transport department swooped in, stating it was illegal to rent out white-board cars! In a surprise crackdown, the Kasturinagar RTO (regional transport office) hauled away 21 private cars that were attached to Zoomcar, a self-drive car rental app. Transport officials maintained that these cars, some of them high-end SUVs, were being run commercially without valid permits. Regional transport officer (East) GP Krishnananda said his enforcement team of six carried out the drive across the city after repeated warnings were ignored. This was the first major crackdown by the department against white-board vehicles being run as rental cars in the last two years. Earlier, the Karnataka Transport Authority had pointed out that Zoomcar held a rent-a-motorcab licence, which expired in Jan last year. The allegation against the company is that it was hiring white-board vehicles in violation of motor vehicle rules. The Times of India tried reaching out to Zoomcar for comments, but in vain. In fact, Krishnananda and team carried out a special operation to identify such white-board cars by posing as customers. It all began Wednesday when officials approached the owners as regular customers and booked vehicles, claiming they were heading out on trips with friends. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Once the booking was confirmed, they went to the owner's location, picked up the car to check if it bore a white board, and then drove it straight to the Kasturinagar RTO office. When the owners tracked the GPS and noticed their vehicles were at an unusual location, they called to find out what was happening. That's when officials dropped the bomb — the cars had been seized. Krishnananda told TOI: "Zoomcar still hasn't renewed its aggregator licence. Private vehicles cannot be used commercially — it's a clear loss to the govt and totally illegal. Of the 25 cars seized, most belonged to software engineers, some were from other states including BH-series, and one was even owned by a defence employee. Each vehicle now faces a fine of Rs 30,000 to Rs 35,000, while out-of-state cars must also pay Rs 5 lakh to Rs 7 lakh as lifetime tax. The vehicles will be released only after fines are cleared and the owners give an undertaking not to reattach them." The owners have been booked under Section 200 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Among the car models seized were Baleno, Glanza, Safari, Dzire, Kia, Tata, and Hyundai. Private cars only for personal use During the seizures, officials faced resistance from vehicle owners. The RTO stressed that anyone wanting to run a transport business must register their vehicle with a yellow board; only then can it be rented out legally. Officials confirmed that stringent measures would continue against such violations to curb the misuse of private registration for commercial purposes. "This is our second such drive: about six months ago, we issued notice after finding 15 vehicles, but despite warnings, people continued these activities," Krishnananda said.

Punjab demands Rs 60,000cr from Centre, cites pending GST, rural fund, other dues
1 2 Chandigarh: Punjab finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Thursday urged the Centre to pay the state govt a total of Rs 60,000 crore, including a pending goods and services tax (GST) compensation and other outstanding funds. Cheema criticised the "arbitrary" rationalisation of GST tax slabs as a "gamble" by the Centre, calling it BJP's "jumlebaazi" (fraud). He also questioned the move to rationalise GST by slashing "sin tax" on goods like unmanufactured tobacco and cigarettes. After attending back-to-back meetings of the Union govt's group of ministers (GoM) on GST in New Delhi, Cheema told TOI that the state suffered substantial financial losses under the GST regime without receiving due compensation. "Centre wants to shatter the economy of the states and it is the biggest attack on India's federal structure. When states don't have funds to carry out developmental works, they will have to approach the Centre with folded hands for constructing schools and hospitals. Since the introduction of the GST regime, 27 exemptions have been given to various sectors and items, and rates have been revised 15 times already. It shows the Centre's GST system is faulty and needs to be corrected," he said. Providing a breakdown of the Rs 60,000-crore demand, Cheema said the amount includes Rs 50,000 crore for uncompensated GST losses, Rs 8,000 crore in pending rural development fund (RDF), and an additional Rs 1,000 crore that is set to be withdrawn from the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna by dropping certain projects in the state. Cheema highlighted the financial impact on Punjab since GST regime was introduced. "Since the introduction of GST, Punjab has suffered a loss of Rs 1,11,045 crore," he said. He added that while the state's revenue projection was Rs 2,37,520 crore, Rs 1,26,485 crore was promised as compensation under the GST regime. The minister also voiced concerns over the Centre's handling of the compensation cess and the slashing of tax on "sin" goods. He alleged that Punjab suffered financial losses due to the Centre's "wrong policies". He added if the state had not joined the 'one-nation, one-tax' regime, its tax collection would have been much higher. Regarding the tax rate changes, Cheema accused the Centre of "gambling in the name of rationalisation" and randomly changing slabs. He cited the example of tax on unmanufactured tobacco being slashed from 90-98% to 40%, while the tax on cigarettes was reduced from 33-64% to 40%. He questioned how this could be a move to ensure people's health. He noted that the tax on processed food like pasta was proposed to be reduced from 12% to 5%. "At the meeting, we demanded that the state should be compensated on account of any losses due to rationalisation of GST rates," he said. Slamming the BJP, he said, "It is jumlebazi of the BJP-led Centre. They say people will celebrate Diwali, but they have played a gamble by trying to make some goods cheap and others costly... We have supported some of the changes, but the Centre should compensate the states for the losses." During his recent Independence Day speech, PM Narendra Modi announced that "next-generation GST reforms" would be unveiled by Diwali, referring to them as a "Diwali gift" and a "double Diwali" for the people.
