Congo to resume World Cup 2026 qualifiers after missing two matches with FIFA ban

The Hindu6 hours ago

Congo will be allowed to continue participating in the World Cup qualifiers despite missing two fixtures in March when it was banned, world football's governing body FIFA said on Wednesday.
Congo (not DR Congo, which is separate country in Central Africa) was suspended from February to May because of government interference in the running of its football association (FECOFOOT) but the ban was lifted when officials returned to their positions and were handed back access to the headquarters and technical training centre.
Sports minister Hugues Ngouelondele had appointed an ad-hoc committee last year to run the association, claiming it needed to sort out disputes among association office bearers, but FIFA suspended FECOFOOT due to third-party interference, which violates its statutes.
Which are the matches Congo missed in FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers Congo?
During the ban, Congo were not allowed to participate in any international competition, which meant it could not play 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Tanzania and Niger in March.
What is the result of those matches?
According to FIFA rules, the points from those fixtures were forfeited and a 3-0 victory awarded to Tanzania and Niger, respectively.
What are Congo's upcoming matches in FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers?
Congo is scheduled to play Tanzania at home in September and conclude its fixtures in October with matches at Niger and Morocco.
Can Congo still qualify for FIFA World Cup 2026?
Congo has no points in the group yet, which Morocco lead with 15 points, six more than Tanzania in second place. The group winner qualifies for next year's World Cup in North America while the runner-up has a possibility to participate in playoffs if they are among the four best second-placed teams in the nine African qualifying groups.
Congo will continue in the qualifiers when they resume in September, even if they have no chance of qualifying. Congo was African champion in 1972 but have never been to a World Cup.
Which other countries have received similar FIFA bans due to government interference?
FIFA has taken a hard line on government interference in football matters with the likes of Chad, Kenya, Pakistan and Zimbabwe among those banned in recent years.

"Hope they come back victorious": Kapil Dev extends best wishes to Shubman Gill-led Indian team ahead of England series

By Vipul Kashyap New Delhi [India], June 18 (ANI): As India prepares for a high-stakes Test series in England under the leadership of Shubman Gill, legendary cricketer Kapil Dev extended his best wishes to the young captain and the team on Wednesday. Speaking ahead of the much-anticipated tour, the former India skipper expressed his pride and optimism. 'We feel very proud and wish them all the luck. I hope they come back victorious,' said the 1983 World Cup-winning captain on the sidelines of an event here. Kapil also shared his thoughts on premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who has made it clear that he does not want to take on the responsibility of leading the national side in Test cricket. Respecting Bumrah's stance, Kapil remarked, 'This is his personal views, to me the team is more important.' The fourth-ranked Test team will line up without its batting bigwigs Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who bid adieu to the Test format last month. Along with the batting wizards, India won't have the presence of its frontline crafty off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who retired from international cricket midway through the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Ex-NFL player Ramzee Robinson sues Chiefs for wrongful termination, racial discrimination

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A former NFL defensive back is suing the Kansas City Chiefs for wrongful termination from his job as director of player engagement after accusing the franchise of discriminating against him because he is Black. Ramzee Robinson, who spent nine years with the Chiefs, filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri on Sunday. In the lawsuit, Robinson claims that he was called into a meeting in February and accused of attacking a female co-worker, and that Chiefs refused to show him security video of the encounter. Robinson ultimately was fired from his position, which involved locker room management, mentorship and other responsibilities within the team. The lawsuit claims that Robinson was paid a salary of $125,000 by the Chiefs, but that his research found other NFL teams paid comparable positions an average salary of $171,932, not including other benefits. It also claims that "the Chiefs paid African-American business employees less than their white counterparts.' Chiefs spokesman Brad Gee told The Associated Press on Wednesday that while he could not comment on pending legal matters, 'to be clear, the Chiefs do not tolerate discrimination of any kind." 'We look forward to the facts of this case coming to light,' Gee said. The 41-year-old Robinson was the final player chosen in the 2007 draft by Detroit. He played in 19 games over two seasons for the Lions, then appeared in three games for Philadelphia and four for Cleveland in 2009. He never played for the Chiefs. /hub/nfl

Macleod wary of Japan as Wales seek end to losing streak

Back-row forward Josh Macleod expects a Japan side coached by veteran boss Eddie Jones to pose plenty of problems when Wales bid to end their lengthy winless run next month. Wales travel to Japan on the back of 17 straight Test defeats -- a record for a major nation -- since they last enjoyed a victory, over Georgia at the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France. Former Australia and England coach Jones, now in charge of Japan for the second time, hopes to extend that woeful sequence during a two-Test series in Kitakyushu and Kobe on July 5 and 12 respectively. "I'm not too familiar with him (Jones) myself but I have heard on the grapevine that he's got certain attributes. I think we'll find those out on the pitch," said Macleod on Wednesday. "No Test game is easy, but as a group we haven't shied away from it (the losing streak). "We've touched on the fact that we are looking to end that, we've got a job to do in the conditions. We've got to pull together and stay tight as a group, look to produce on the pitch and get that win." Macleod has returned to the Wales squad to provide loose forward competition for Taulupe Faletau, Aaron Wainwright and others following a career blighted by injuries. The 28-year-old was denied a Six Nations debut against Scotland in 2021 after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon in training. Macleod had to wait until the 2022 clash against Georgia to win his first senior cap, only to then miss the 2023 World Cup with a shoulder injury. "I've had a decent bit of bad luck over the years," said the twice-capped Macleod. "This year one of my focuses has been to stay fit and do all I can off the pitch to hit that target. So far, so good." jdg/jc
