Uber to launch self-driving taxis in London in 2026
Trials will begin with safety drivers for emergencies before fully autonomous Uber taxis hit the London streets.
Ride-hailing firm Uber will launch self-driving taxis in London next year when England trials new driverless services, the firm and the UK government said on Tuesday.
Under the Uber pilot scheme, services will initially have a human in the driver's seat who can take control of the vehicle in an emergency, but the trials will eventually transition to being fully driverless.
The government announcement will see companies including Uber allowed to trial commercial driverless services without a human presence for the first time in the UK.
They will include taxis and 'bus-like' services.
Making autonomy 'safe and reliable'
Uber CEO Andrew Macdonald described London's roads as 'one of the world's busiest and most complex urban environments'.
'Our vision is to make autonomy a safe and reliable option for riders everywhere, and this trial in London brings that future closer to reality,' he said.
Members of the public will be able to book the transport via an app from spring 2026, ahead of a potential wider rollout when new legislation — the Automated Vehicles Act — becomes law from the second half of 2027, the Department for Transport added.
Job opportunities
The technology could create 38,000 jobs, add £42 billion ($57 billion) to the UK economy by 2025, and make roads safer, it said.

'The future of transport is arriving. Self-driving cars could bring jobs, investment, and the opportunity for the UK to be among the world-leaders in new technology,' Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said.
'We can't afford to take a back seat on AI…. That's why we're bringing timelines forward today,' added Technology Secretary Peter Kyle.
The wider rollout will also allow the sale and use of self-driving, private cars.
Driverless vehicle trials have been underway in the UK since January 2015, with British companies Wayve and Oxa 'spearheading significant breakthroughs in the technology', the ministry said.
'These early pilots will help build public trust and unlock new jobs, services, and markets,' said Wayve CEO Alex Kendall.
Safety in self-driving
According to the government the forthcoming legislation will require self-driving vehicles to 'achieve a level of safety at least as high as competent and careful human drivers'.
'By having faster reaction times than humans, and by being trained on large numbers of driving scenarios, including learning from real-world incidents, self-driving vehicles can help reduce deaths and injuries,' it said.
Driverless taxis with limited capacity are already on the roads in the United States and China, most notably in the central Chinese city of Wuhan where a fleet of over 500 can be hailed by app in designated areas.

China, Africa ask US to return to 'right track' on trade differences
China and 53 African countries called on nations, especially the US, to return to the "right track" of resolving trade differences, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Wednesday. The statement came after China's foreign minister Wang Yi met with African officials in the city of Changsha located in southern Hunan province. The White House, in its April 2 "Liberation Day" tariff announcement, imposed some of the highest tariffs on several African countries. That included levies of: up to 50% on goods from Lesotho; 47% for Madagascar; 40% for Mauritius; 38% for Botswana; and 31% for South Africa, the continent's biggest exporter to the US. The China-Africa statement, made on behalf of China, 53 African countries and the African Union Commission said it "firmly opposed any party reaching a compromise deal at the expense of the interests of other countries." "We call on all countries, especially the United States, to return to the right track of resolving trade differences through consultation on an equal, respectful and reciprocal basis," the statement said. China is willing to implement zero-tariff measures for the 53 African countries that it has diplomatic relations with, the statement said, apart from Eswatini, the only African country that supports Taiwan. China's relations with African countries have strengthened as its own economy slows and it has emerged as Africa's biggest lender. In recent years, China has stepped up cooperation in areas from agriculture to infrastructure. The continent offers a much needed avenue for Chinese state-owned infrastructure firms struggling for projects as indebted local governments hold off on spending, and as a market for its electric vehicles and solar panels, areas where the US and EU say China has over-capacity.

Toyota and Daimler to merge truck subsidiaries
TOKYO - Shares in Hino Motors, the truck-making unit of Japanese auto giant Toyota, plunged on Wednesday after it announced a merger with a subsidiary of Germany's Daimler Truck. The move is seen as an attempt to stay competitive at a time when global automakers are faced with US trade tariff uncertainty and new Chinese rivals. The companies had said Tuesday that the integration of Hino and Daimler's subsidiary Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus would "establish a new strong Japanese truck powerhouse". They said they aimed to complete the merger, on an equal footing under a listed holding company, by April 2026. Hino Motors shares were down more than 12 percent in morning trade on Wednesday. "Daimler Truck and Toyota will each aim to own 25 percent of the (listed) holding company of the integrated Mitsubishi Fuso and Hino," a joint statement said. "The companies aim to improve business efficiency in areas such as development, procurement and production," it said. "They expect to significantly enhance the competitiveness of Japanese commercial vehicle manufacturers and strengthen the foundation of the automotive industry in Japan and Asia." The new company will work to develop models using new fuels and technologies, from electric trucks and hydrogen-powered trucks to autonomous driving systems. Analysts say Japanese firms have lost ground in the EV market in recent years by focusing more on hybrid vehicles, industry analysts say.
