The maths of coaching and the chemistry of captaincy
The Azharuddin-Bedi combination was not destined to be a great one. In New Zealand where the two first came together, Bedi told the media after a poor Indian performance that if anyone wanted to throw himself into the Pacific Ocean, he would not stop them. A great player with a deep knowledge of the game lacked 'chemistry' with the captain. This 'chemistry' seems to be more important than almost anything else.
Watch Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes going about their task. You suspect they could finish each other's sentences. During the recent India series, the cameras occasionally panned on McCullum signalling to Stokes on the field; it wasn't seen as interference, merely as a reminder of earlier discussions. Powerful figure
Today's coach is powerful. The captain's role begins and ends at the boundary line. This is partly because in international cricket, the coach leads a team which is usually larger than the one the captain leads. Inputs and data and mathematical possibilities are funneled through him to the captain who makes his decisions based on these. Some coaches are happy to remain in the background. Captaincy is not an exact science, and captains sometimes ditch the data and go with their guts; the unexpected can be as lethal as the designed.
How important is the coach? He does make the captain's job easier by handling practice sessions, room allotments and by presenting to him the result of coaching discussions with the rest of the staff. He is the details man, and the captain the recipient of instructions on a need-to-know basis so his head is not cluttered with too many things. He can focus on the decisions on the field. Many still get involved at a granular level; a few might be better off without a coach.
The passing of Bob Simpson, who played a key role in taking a young Australian side to the top in the mid-80s, and his relationship with skipper Allan Border has focused attention on the matter afresh.
Simpson, a former captain, did not have a team with modern gizmos, and had to rely on native sense and experience. A later coach, John Buchanan, had played no international cricket but was successful, taking Australia to two World Cup triumphs.
Yet, the question he was asked by Bedi at an awards function is one many have asked of coaches in general. Bedi asked: 'Tell us, John, have you made this Australian team great, or have they made you?' Both, might be the possible answer.
India have a new captain and coach, and it will be interesting to chart the Shubman Gill-Gautam Gambhir partnership. Gill showed aggression in England. Will that complement or clash with Gambhir's own aggression? Teams take on the personality of their captain.
Balancing act
Coaching India involves a unique balancing act to retain clarity among superstar players, demanding fans, challenging media and the politics of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
John Wright, who struck up a fruitful partnership with Sourav Ganguly, saw the team following the match-fixing scandal and was at the helm as India began to win abroad more consistently. When India first became the No. 1 team in the world, M.S. Dhoni had in his corner Gary Kirsten; the Virat Kohli-Ravi Shastri combination led to success too, especially in Australia where India won back-to-back series. By this time Kohli had made the captain the more powerful, using his clout to have coach Anil Kumble replaced. With Rahul Dravid as coach and Rohit Sharma as captain — two even-tempered men — it was an equal relationship.
Results are important for both captain and coach. But a poor captain with a good result trumps a good coach with a poor result every time.

Jaiswal has played 23 T20Is for India so far, scoring 723 runs at a strike rate of 164.31. His last T20I came in July 2024 against Sri Lanka, coincidentally the same series in which Shubman Gill also played his last T20I for India before being picked for the Asia Cup. The selectors managed Gill and Jaiswal's workload, asking the duo to stay fit and be available for the Tests. This was the first time that every player was available for selection in T20Is, and Gill got the nod ahead of Jaiswal. 'See, I understand that selection is a thankless job. Leaving somebody out, telling someone they are dropped, it is not an easy thing. You have to speak to the players, you have to go through the sadness. I just hope Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal were given a call, and they were told the reasons behind not being picked,' Ashwin said on his YouTube channel 'Ash Ki Baat'. 'Genuinely, I understand Shubman Gill's selection. He is also the vice-captain. He has scored a lot of runs for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL. He has credentials to be picked in the T20I setup,' he added. Ashwin scrutinised Ajit Agarkar and the rest of the selection committee, saying Jaiswal was part of the T20 World Cup squad, so how could he be shown the door? There is strong merit to Ashwin's remark, as in the press conference, Agarkar confirmed that Sanju Samson only played as an opener, as Gill and Jaiswal were unavailable for selection in T20Is. The former India spinner, who represents Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL, said the obsession with making one player the captain in all three formats needs to stop. 'Jaiswal has also been in some fine form. Maybe they are thinking of Shubman Gill as the leader for the future. Maybe he can be the all-format captain. But it is not necessary to have the same captain in all formats,' said Ashwin. 'What is sadder is that you have announced Gill as the vice-captain, so Sanju Samson's place is also under threat. Bangladesh, Kazakhstan to be part of Asia Cup in place of Pakistan & Oman
With just 10 days to go for the first match, Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) finally announced the schedule for the men's Asia Cup hockey tournament. Pakistan, however, will not be part of it, having been replaced by Bangladesh in the eight-team tournament that will be held from Aug 29 to Sept 7 at Rajgir Sports Complex in Bihar. Oman also pulled out of the tournament at the last moment, with Kazakhstan taking their place. The remaining five teams taking part in the event besides hosts India are Japan, China, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia and South Korea. While India have been clubbed with Japan, China and Kazakhstan in Pool A, Pool B consists of Malaysia, Korea, Bangladesh and Chinese Taipei. After the pool stage, where the teams will play each other once, the top two teams from each pool will play in the Super4s. Once again it will be played in a round-robin format with the top two teams making it to the final. The winner will be awarded a spot in the FIH World Cup to be held next year in the Netherlands and Belgium. As far as the fixtures are concerned, Malaysia will play the tournament opener against Bangladesh, while India will hope to make a winning start when they take on China. Being the No. 1 side in Asia, Craig Fulton's men will undoubtedly come into the tournament as strong favourites. But hockey fans will certainly feel the absence of Pakistan. Their participation was always doubtful following the Pahalgam incident. However, the Indian govt had said it would provide visas to the players and even Hockey India was confident of their participation. But Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) refused to travel citing security concerns. AHF president Fumio Ogura, meanwhile, said in a statement, "The Asia Cup will bring together the very best of Asian hockey. With World Cup qualification on the line, every match will carry enormous importance. We are confident this edition will showcase thrilling competition, inspire millions of fans, and leave a lasting legacy for the sport in Asia." Korea continue to be the most successful side in the tournament, having won the title five times in the past. As for India, they finished third in the last edition in Jakarta but it does seem they will finish on top this time around. Riku, Kuldeep set for Asia Cup action
1 2 3 4 5 6 Lucknow: Two UP players, chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav and batter Rinku Singh , have secured berths in the Indian squad for Asia Cup , to be played in UAE from Sep 8. The team was announced in Mumbai on Tuesday afternoon. Kuldeep, who was also a part of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test series in England, could not make it to the playing XI in any of the five Test matches. After the Indian Premier League in May, he was not seen in action in any official matches and now will head directly to Dubai for the Asia Cup, which will be played in T20 format. Rinku Singh has seen some action in the ongoing UPT20 League. He led the Meerut Mavericks in the inaugural match and bowled a couple of overs, taking one wicket. Talking to TOI, Kuldeep's coach Kapil Pandey said, "After the England tour he is in his home town (Kanpur) and doing a lot of net practice and playing friendly matches. He is fit and fine for the Asia Cup." "He is always a dominant force on Asian pitches and should do well again, like in the 2018 Asia Cup when he had the most wickets during the tournament. He is in form and India's number one spin bowler when playing in Asia," he said. Speaking about the squad, former India wicketkeeper Saba Karim said, "Inclusion of Shubman Gill is a good move. He has earned place in the T20 team on the sheer strength of his performance in the Test series in England. Being made the vice-captain, the team management and national selectors see him as an all format player-cum- captain." Asked about the middle order batter Rinku Singh, he said, "I'm glad he is being given another chance. The Indian team still believes in his value to the team. He bats well, has started bowling off-spin, and is an excellent fielder. You can place him anywhere in the outfield, and he has safe hands."
