Trainer 'gutted' after losing appeal against horse's controversial demotion
A France Galop panel ruled that Longchamp stewards were correct to reverse the placings of the French 1,000 Guineas and place first-past-the-post Shes Perfect behind Zarigana
Trainer Charlie Fellowes has been left "gutted" after losing an appeal against a controversial stewards' ruling which denied him a first Classic success. Shes Perfect, owned by a syndicate run by social media influencer Basher Watts, lined up in the French 1,000 Guineas.
The daughter of Sioux Nation and jockey Kieran Shoemark finished a nose in front of favourite Zarigana. But connections' joy turned to despair after the stewards judged Shes Perfect guilty of interference when she edged left into fourth home Exactly, who in turn bumped the fast-finishing Zarigana and reversed the placings of the front pair.
Watts was seen celebrating wildly with syndicate members after the field crossed the line but minutes later the fairytale was over when the Longchamp stewards made their ruling.
Fellowes and Shoemark travelled to Paris on Tuesday to argue that the raceday stewards made the wrong decision and backed up their claims with new footage of the race, taken from behind and overhead..
They also highlighted Mickael Barzalona's actions in the moments after he dropped his whip when he struck Zarigana 12 times with his bare hands.
France Galop's disciplinary panel took all the evidence into account but rejected the appeal in their ruling published on Wednesday.
The panel blamed Shoemark for the interference, saying he had allowed Shes Perfect to lean for several strides in the last 350 metres of the race, and was more focussed on using his whip than preventing her move off a straight line.
This had caused Exactly, to his left, to become unbalanced and then in turn lean into Zarigana just as she was poised to deliver her challenge.
Exactly's jockey Ryan Moore provided written evidence which stated he had been carried off his line by interference from Shes Perfect and forced him to change his whip hand to avoid a collision.
'I didn't really know what to expect, I think it was a really difficult decision to make,' Fellowes said. 'You only have to look at the comments on social media, it really was 50-50. Some thought it was incredibly harsh and some thought it was a fair outcome.
'That was probably a fair reflection on the incident, the front-on camera looks awful but from the camera behind and overhead it looks as if she's done very little. It was a very, very hard case and I'm sure it wasn't a decision that was taken lightly.
'Obviously I'm absolutely gutted, it's a very big deal for my yard. I've got 40 horses in and to win a Classic, a Group One, is huge for us and to have it taken away under these circumstances is difficult.
'In those Group Ones we just don't seem to have much luck, you only have to go back to Prince Of Arran in his third attempt at the Melbourne Cup. It's gutting, but I completely respect the decision and maybe there'll be a rematch at Ascot in June.
'If I had a pound for every time someone has messaged me since last Sunday saying 'at least you know you have a good filly on your hands' I would be a very rich man!
'It is true, we've got a very talented filly and wherever she runs next she's going to be one of the favourites for a big race. Whether that's the Prix de Diane or the Coronation we haven't decided, but she's a filly to really look forward to for the rest of the season.
'It's an amazing story and the ownership group are fantastic. She couldn't have taken the race in France any better, she's fresh and well and raring to go again.'

Beckett hoping he might just reach the ‘summit' this weekend
Beckett has only had four runners in the premier Classic, coming closest with Westover three years ago. However, he has won the Oaks twice, with Look Here and Talent. His yard is now one of the biggest in the country and while he is well represented in all three Group Ones at Epsom this weekend, he is unequivocal when asked which race he would like to win above all others. 'I was asked by a member of the French press if the Arc was the race I'd wanted to win above all else and my response was 'behind the Derby only' and I stand by that,' said Beckett. 'I think if you are an Englishman and you train racehorses, the Derby is, and hopefully always will be, the summit. Few people get to do it and if it ever came off it will be more than I ever could have hoped for when I set off training, that's for sure.' Pride Of Arras won the Dante Stakes at York and remains unbeaten in two starts to date, with Beckett not too worried about a lack of experience. 'Inevitably it is a concern, but given how he went round York, I know it's a flat track but everything else is a test, and how well balanced he is, it is not a primary concern – but I could be wrong!' said Beckett on a media call organised by the Jockey Club. 'I'm not going into it with that as a concern, but we'll find out on Saturday.' Stanhope Gardens has not had a traditional preparation, as though he pushed Derby favourite Delacroix close in the Autumn Stakes, this season the only suitable race Beckett could find was over a mile in a conditions race at Salisbury. He said: 'The two have had very different preps. If I'd had a conventional prep with Stanhope Gardens I'd hope they'd be a bit closer in the betting. 'Bookmakers are rarely wrong, so I think it's likely they'll finish in that order, but I never thought Talent would finish in front of Secret Gesture in the Oaks in 2013. 'If Ruling Court and Delacroix both stay we'll all have to go a bit, but it's a question of whether they both will. 'It's the same every year with people saying 'I think he'll stay', but we never know until they try. I think that's the biggest single factor, whether those at the head of the market get home.' In recent years the Derby has been dominated by Aidan O'Brien and Coolmore. But Beckett thinks the loss of super-sire Galileo may bring about a change to the race's complexion. 'It's not daunting taking on Coolmore and Godolphin. Whatever happens it's great to be there with two of the front seven in the betting,' he said. 'The sport relies on horses coming out of anywhere and Coolmore's domination of the Derby hasn't necessarily done the race any favours in the wider sense. 'We all applaud what Aidan and Coolmore achieve, but the fact Galileo and Montjeu aren't here might just change the dynamic of the race and that has got to be great for the sport.' At the draw on Wednesday, however, Beckett was done no favours by former champion jockey Willie Carson when he drew stall 16 for Pride Of Arras and two for Stanhope Gardens, from which no Derby winners have so far emerged. Beckett said: 'I can't worry about it because I can't do anything about it. Westover was drawn in two and there'd been no winners out of there and my heart sank when I read that. 'I wasn't aware there'd been no winners out of 16. The Great Gatsby was second from 16 a while back (2003). That would concern me less than two.'

There's little doubt she's the best filly in the race with stamina the only question mark. She wasn't stopping at Newmarket and isn't a keen sort so isn't likely to pull her chance away. At first glance, her breeding does seem to scream a mile and the softish ground may play to more of a stayer. We have only seen this daughter of Dubawi twice but she has created a big impression. She won at Kempton on debut in August before Saeed Bin Suroor put her away. Advertisement Her next outing was a really promising fourth in the 1,000 Guineas where she was definitely doing her best work in the closing stages. She was a little green when the pace hotted up and she will have learned plenty before being supplemented for this test. Her dam stayed 1m2f strongly in soft ground so there's every chance she'll relish this trip. Saeed is something of a forgotten trainer these days but he's got two Oaks wins from his halcyon days so knows what it takes to win. Advertisement GISELLE 3 ELLE of a filly. She only had two rivals to beat in the Lingfield Oaks Trial on comeback last month but did it by nine easy lengths. She handled the track so should be fine at Epsom too. She is one of the few in the field who has no stamina doubts and there's a lot more to come. She scored on dead ground as a juvenile and has a lively each-way chance for Aidan O'Brien. Advertisement GO GO BOOTS 2 KICK off Boots. Considering Oisin Murphy is on board for the Gosdens, she is big price for all she has a bit to find on form. Her third in the Musidora at York last time was far from a disgrace. She looked very much a work in progress on the Knavesmire and ran around a bit in the closing stages. Advertisement That's not what you want to see before tackling tricky Epsom and she looks more suited to the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot next month. MINNIE HAUK 3 HAUK has to fly. Ryan Moore's choice of the Aidan O'Brien trio crossed the line with plenty left when winning the Cheshire Oaks on comeback. She will definitely come on for that run and is guaranteed to see out the extra furlong here. Advertisement Handling Chester often means Epsom will be fine too. On the negative side, she didn't beat a lot on the Roodee so will need to fine more form-wise although O'Brien runners often take a big step up for a run. QILIN QUEEN 2 QUEEN won't be crowned. She is progressing nicely for Ed Walker and battled all the way to win a Newbury Listed race last time. Advertisement That was on the nod from Revoir who also lines up today. That was over 1m2f when she went from the front and just held on so stamina may be an issue. Either way, it's a fair leap to be winning a Classic on current form. REVOIR 3 Advertisement REVVED up. The line came a stride too soon when she finished second to Qilin Queen at Newbury last time but Ralph Beckett's filly looks a hotter prospect. She came home strongly so should be suited by this step up in distance and has improvement to come after just two starts. In-form Beckett's fillies often come on significantly for a run and she's right in the each-way picture. WEMIGHTAKEDLONGWAY 2 Advertisement WAY out. Add an extra star if the ground is riding genuinely soft as she relished testing conditions when winning a Navan Group 3 over 1m2f last time. That was a big improvement on her effort in the Ballysax on comeback where she looked a mile off Oaks standard. She has a fair bit to find on form so needs that downpour. WHIRL 4 Advertisement GIVE it a Whirl. She may yet prove to be the best of the Aidan O'Brien runners after her easy Musidora win at York last time. That has been a useful pointer to the Oaks and she had lots of running left at the end of 1m2f so stamina shouldn't be an issue. ELWATEEN (4.00 Epsom, nap) caught the eye with a staying-on fourth in the 1,000 Guineas and can blossom over this longer trip. She won't mind a bit of cut in the ground and can go close at decent odds under Jim Crowley. Desert Flower showed her class when winning the Guineas at Newmarket and will be hard to beat if lasting home — which isn't guaranteed on pedigree.
