French Oaks redemption bid on the cards for Shes Perfect

Shes Perfect is set to return to France to atone for her misfortune in the French 1000 Guineas with a likely crack at the Prix de Diane. The Sioux Nation filly appeared to have given trainer Charlie Fellowes his first Group One success at ParisLongchamp when first past the post in the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches. She drifted to her left across the track, however, and as the winning margin over Zarigana was only a nose, she was placed behind that rival by the stewards. An appeal against that decision failed but Fellowes has not been deterred and feels the 10-furlong trip of the French Oaks should suit her perfectly. 'I think the plan at this stage is to go to the Prix de Diane,' said Fellowes. 'We're keen to explore 10 furlongs with her and she got headed by (third-placed) Mandanaba in the French Guineas and then fought back and got back in front of her, so I think she will stay. 'She's out of a Galileo mare so on pedigree she should stay and I've always thought on her home work she will stay, so I think we will try 10 furlongs and that is where we are leaning.'

Kieran Shoemark able to ride Luther in French Derby despite ban as Charlie Fellowes seeks change of fortune

SUSPENDED Kieran Shoemark will play his 'joker' in order to ride Charlie Fellowes' ace in the French Derby. The jockey is currently serving a nine-day ban and looked set to miss out on riding 10-1 shot Luther in the Prix du Jockey Club on Sunday. But jockeys in France are allowed to play a so-called joker once a year in order to lift a ban for a single day. It has been a rough few weeks for Shoemark, who lost the job as John Gosden's No1 and was stripped of the French 1,000 Guineas on Fellowes' Shes Perfect by the stewards. But he and Fellowes will at least get the chance for what would be sweet revenge in Chantilly. Fellowes said: 'The rules in France are different, jockeys can't move dates of a ban around like they can here, but Kieran can play a joker so he will be able to ride on Sunday. 'It's great that he'll be able to get back on Luther as he's a brilliant jockey and he knows the horse very well.' Fellowes has had a tough go of it recently, too, and he was gutted when his appeal against Shes Perfect's demotion was thrown out. He said: 'Maybe the Lord will be looking down and saying, 'you know what, he deserves a change of luck'. 'Luther seems in really good form, he is fresh and well and he'll have one more little piece of work before the weekend. "It looks like he is crying out for ten furlongs but he has lots of tactical speed, so I think he will be bang there. "If you watch the Guineas back he sat close to a very strong pace, and the other three who are running in the French Derby at the weekend all sat right out the back. "We used a fair bit of petrol to get to the position we were in, and I think of all the horses who ran in the Guineas we have a rock-solid chance. 'My main worry is it looks like being a big field and if you're drawn high at Chantilly, anything higher than 10, you've had it. I can't buy a good draw at the moment, but maybe we are due one.' Trainer 'gutted' after losing appeal against horse's controversial demotion

A France Galop panel ruled that Longchamp stewards were correct to reverse the placings of the French 1,000 Guineas and place first-past-the-post Shes Perfect behind Zarigana Trainer Charlie Fellowes has been left "gutted" after losing an appeal against a controversial stewards' ruling which denied him a first Classic success. Shes Perfect, owned by a syndicate run by social media influencer Basher Watts, lined up in the French 1,000 Guineas. The daughter of Sioux Nation and jockey Kieran Shoemark finished a nose in front of favourite Zarigana. But connections' joy turned to despair after the stewards judged Shes Perfect guilty of interference when she edged left into fourth home Exactly, who in turn bumped the fast-finishing Zarigana and reversed the placings of the front pair. ‌ Watts was seen celebrating wildly with syndicate members after the field crossed the line but minutes later the fairytale was over when the Longchamp stewards made their ruling. ‌ Fellowes and Shoemark travelled to Paris on Tuesday to argue that the raceday stewards made the wrong decision and backed up their claims with new footage of the race, taken from behind and overhead.. They also highlighted Mickael Barzalona's actions in the moments after he dropped his whip when he struck Zarigana 12 times with his bare hands. France Galop's disciplinary panel took all the evidence into account but rejected the appeal in their ruling published on Wednesday. The panel blamed Shoemark for the interference, saying he had allowed Shes Perfect to lean for several strides in the last 350 metres of the race, and was more focussed on using his whip than preventing her move off a straight line. This had caused Exactly, to his left, to become unbalanced and then in turn lean into Zarigana just as she was poised to deliver her challenge. ‌ Exactly's jockey Ryan Moore provided written evidence which stated he had been carried off his line by interference from Shes Perfect and forced him to change his whip hand to avoid a collision. 'I didn't really know what to expect, I think it was a really difficult decision to make,' Fellowes said. 'You only have to look at the comments on social media, it really was 50-50. Some thought it was incredibly harsh and some thought it was a fair outcome. ‌ 'That was probably a fair reflection on the incident, the front-on camera looks awful but from the camera behind and overhead it looks as if she's done very little. It was a very, very hard case and I'm sure it wasn't a decision that was taken lightly. 'Obviously I'm absolutely gutted, it's a very big deal for my yard. I've got 40 horses in and to win a Classic, a Group One, is huge for us and to have it taken away under these circumstances is difficult. 'In those Group Ones we just don't seem to have much luck, you only have to go back to Prince Of Arran in his third attempt at the Melbourne Cup. It's gutting, but I completely respect the decision and maybe there'll be a rematch at Ascot in June. ‌ 'If I had a pound for every time someone has messaged me since last Sunday saying 'at least you know you have a good filly on your hands' I would be a very rich man! 'It is true, we've got a very talented filly and wherever she runs next she's going to be one of the favourites for a big race. Whether that's the Prix de Diane or the Coronation we haven't decided, but she's a filly to really look forward to for the rest of the season. 'It's an amazing story and the ownership group are fantastic. She couldn't have taken the race in France any better, she's fresh and well and raring to go again.'

‘Shame on racing' – Fury as Kieran Shoemark and Shes Perfect lose French 1000 Guineas appeal despite new video evidence

OUTRAGE 'Shame on racing' – Fury as Kieran Shoemark and Shes Perfect lose French 1000 Guineas appeal despite new video evidence PUNTERS cried 'shame on racing' as not even new video evidence could save Shes Perfect and Kieran Shoemark in their French 1000 Guineas appeal. Sun Racing's Matt Chapman post of footage of the closing stages of the Classic garnered hundreds of thousands of views. Advertisement Chappers and many others insisted the clip showed Shes Perfect did not come off a true line enough to deny Zarigana victory in the Longchamp race the weekend before last. But French stewards stuck with their original decision to reverse placings and award the Aga Khan-owned Zarigana the race and £260,000 prize. It is a devastating blow for trainer Charlie Fellowes and syndicate boss Basher Watts, who has showcased his journey with the star filly every step of the way. But also for Shoemark, with the result capping off an incredibly trying few weeks for the jockey. Advertisement First he lost his gig as John and Thady Gosden's No1 rider after his effort on Field Of Gold in the 2000 Guineas. That has led to him losing the leg up on the awesome grey colt for this Saturday's Irish 2000 Guineas as owners Juddmonte instead opted for the 'best in the business' round the Curragh. Shoemark also missed out on a big ride on Roger Teal's Dancing Gemini in last weekend's Lockinge - with Ryan Moore being picked instead. While it always looked a tough task getting the French stewards to change their mind, no one could blame Fellowes, Shoemark and Watts for giving it a go. Advertisement More to follow.
