China couple choose bicycles over limousines for wedding, get community blessings

A young man and woman in China who swapped traditional luxury bridal cars for a bicycle on their wedding day has captivated mainland social media.
The couple, whose nuptials was held on May 13 in Luohe, Henan province in central China, were showered with blessings along the 20-minute bike ride, Hunan Daily reported.
Chinese families normally use luxury cars for the bride pickup ritual on the big day, the vehicles often being borrowed from friends or rented from wedding organising companies.

But the Henan bride, known as Xing, preferred that her husband used a bicycle to pick her up from her parents' home and take her to the house of his parents.
The decision came as a result of her hobby of bicycle riding and her admiration for the simple love of her parents' generation, said Xing.
'I love riding, so I would like to add this element into my wedding to make it different from others,' Xing was quoted as saying.

Driverless shuttle bus hits tow tractor in second Hong Kong airport collision

A driverless shuttle bus hit an aircraft tow tractor inside a restricted zone at Hong Kong airport on Tuesday, marking the second collision involving the unmanned vehicles in two months. The accident, which did not result in any injuries, occurred around 3pm when the bus, which was not carrying any passengers, detected an obstruction and came to a stop. According to the Airport Authority, a duty officer mistakenly instructed the bus to resume its movements, resulting in a minor collision with the rear of a stationary tow tractor that had partially extended into the driving lane on the apron. Photos posted online by an individual showed the scene of the collision. A preliminary investigation found that the tow tractor was parked at a designated stand but its rear end protruded into the driving path. The bus's sensors identified the obstruction and halted to avoid crossing into the opposite lane. Following protocol, the vehicle issued an alert to the Integrated Airport Centre and manual intervention was required.

Xiaomi posts record revenue of US$16 billion in second quarter on strong electric vehicle sales

Chinese tech giant Xiaomi posted a 30.5 per cent increase in revenue for the second quarter, driven by strong demand for electric vehicles (EVs), even though its core smartphone business experienced flat sales. The Beijing-based company on Tuesday reported revenue of 116 billion yuan (US$16.1 billion) for the three months ended June, a record high that beat analysts' estimates of 114.94 billion yuan. Net profit for the period also reached a record at 10.8 billion yuan, a 75.4 per cent year-on-year increase, exceeding the 8.88 billion yuan forecast by analysts. Xiaomi's Hong Kong-listed shares closed down 1.23 per cent at HK$52.40 on Tuesday ahead of the earnings release. With smartphone sales stagnating, EVs were the primary source of growth for Xiaomi, according to Dan Baker, a senior equity analyst at investment consultancy Morningstar. Revenue from Xiaomi's smart EV, artificial intelligence and other new initiatives business segment reached 21.3 billion yuan in the second quarter.
