PFL Africa moves debut event to July 19; tickets on sale this Thursday
PFL Africa's first event has officially been brought forward by one week, with tickets set to go on sale this Thursday, 22 May.
Originally scheduled for 26 July, the event will now take place on 19 July at the Grand Arena in GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World, located in Goodwood, Cape Town.
In an exclusive interview with Independent Media and MzansiMMA, PFL Africa's General Manager, Elias Schulze, confirmed that South African ticketing platform TicketPro will be the official distributor for the event.
'We like TicketPro's approach, we like their reach, and we believe that they will offer us a viable way to access the right market. We want people to have this access across whatever mechanisms—if it's purely mobile, that's fine. If they need to purchase tickets at selected stores offering the service, such as PostNet or Spar, that's also fine. Let's go where the people are,' said Schulze. Tickets will go on sale at 10:00 am SAST.
The arrival of PFL is set to be a major boost for African MMA, as the global mixed martial arts promotion continues to grow in popularity, rivalling even the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
The Grand Arena will make history as the first venue in Africa to host a major international MMA event. The night will feature 18 top African athletes entering the SmartCage as they begin their journey to claim the PFL Africa title in a knockout tournament.
Headlining PFL Africa's inaugural event will be South Africa's Nkosi Ndebele (8-3), who faces Egypt's rising contender Mahmoud Atef (5-2) in a thrilling Bantamweight semi-final. In the co-main event, Cameroon's Maxwell Djantou Nana (6-1) squares off against Ivory Coast's Mikael Groguhe (6-2) in a battle of heavy-handed finishers.
The card will also showcase a special Women's Strawweight bout featuring undefeated Nigerian prospect Juliet Ukah (6-0). Her opponent is to be announced shortly.
The PFL Africa Tournament will kick off with eight-man brackets in the Heavyweight and Bantamweight divisions. The full tournament schedule and remaining host cities for the semi-finals and finals will be announced soon.
In total, 32 fighters representing 15 African nations will compete across four weight classes in 2025, as the league begins a continent-wide journey to crown the first-ever PFL Africa Champions.
The launch event will also set the stage for the PFL Champions Series: Road to Dubai card, bringing the world's best MMA talent to Africa. Headlining that card will be undefeated Middleweight World Champion Johnny Eblen, who defends his title against Spain's Costello Van Steenis. In the co-main event, Dakota Ditcheva will face Sumiko Inaba in a Women's Flyweight clash. Additional bouts in the Champions Series will be announced in due course.
In July 2024, PFL announced the creation of its third international league, PFL Africa, following the success of PFL Europe and PFL MENA. The league aims to showcase African talent on a global platform.
Former UFC Heavyweight Champion and current global combat sports icon, Cameroon's Francis Ngannou, serves as the acting chairman of the league and plays a pivotal ambassadorial role, aiming to develop the next generation of African champions.
The PFL Africa launch is further supported by strategic broadcast partnerships to ensure wide-reaching distribution across sub-Saharan Africa.
For those unable to attend the event in person, all fights will be broadcast live on SuperSport. Coverage will also be available on Canal+, the official broadcaster for French-speaking sub-Saharan Africa.
To further expand access, PFL has launched a mobile-first platform, distributed in partnership with Content For Mobile (CFM) through leading telecommunications providers. This initiative aims to deliver affordable MMA content directly to fans and reach over 90% of African households.
More details on streaming and broadcasting will be shared in the coming weeks.

Dricus du Plessis' next UFC fight: Four potential opponents
The former UFC middleweight champion will first take time away from the sport to work on a few things. South Africa's former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis may have relinquished his title to Russia's Khamzat Chimaev, but according to his coach Morne Visser, DDP is far from done. The 31-year-old will now go back to the drawing board to address the flaws that led to him losing the belt. Wrestling seems to be the biggest issue for Du Plessis, as witnessed in his fight on Sunday. Currently, the middleweight division is heavily stacked with plenty of fighters standing in line to take on Chimaev for the belt. Here we take a look at four potential opponents who could be next in line for Du Plessis, as he plots his way back to challenging for the middleweight title. Reinier de Ridder The Dutchman is a former training partner of Du Plessis and stylistically this is the fight that makes the most sense as a comeback for the South African. The UFC's No 5 ranked middleweight is a former ONE middleweight and light heavyweight champion with a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and is undefeated in five fights since joining the UFC. With a professional record of 21 wins and only two losses, he has a world class ground game, but can also stand up and brawl if needs be. Reinier de Ridder. Picture: Waleed Zein/Anadolu via Getty Images Anthony Hernandez The No 6 ranked Hernandez – although being in the UFC for some time now – has thrown his hat into the middleweight title picture of late thanks to some devastating victories in the last year. With a professional fight record of 15 wins and 2 losses, the 31-year-old Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt, faces De Ridder in October, with the winner possibly set to face Du Plessis for the No 1 contender's spot to fight for the title. Anthony Hernandez. Picture:Nassourdine Imavov The Russia-born Frenchman is a former UFC middleweight No 1 contender and almost looks a certainty to be next in line for Chimaev, having been knocking loudly on the title challenger door. Just like Du Plessis, Imavov is a big middleweight who likes to keep the fight standing, but also has some holes in his armour when it comes to wrestling. With a fight record of 16 wins and four losses, and riding a four-fight win streak, this boxer will make for a very entertaining fight with DDP. Nassourdine Imavov. Picture: Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC Caio Borralho This Brazilian is a true martial artist, boasting black belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai and is also a brown belt in Judo. A very dangerous fighter, the 32-year-old has a professional fight record of 17 wins and only one loss and is currently on a seven-fight win-streak in the UFC. Fighting out of the world famous Fighting Nerds gym in Brazil, eight of his fights have gone the distance – something that would not excite Du Plessis. He was also the back-up opponent for DDP's last fight against Chimaev.

Renaldo Gouws: 'What evidence is there that Dricus is racist?'
Renaldo Gouws has questioned why South Africans have labelled Dricus du Plessis 'racist'. Images via X: @dricusduplessis Home » Renaldo Gouws: 'What evidence is there that Dricus is racist?' Renaldo Gouws has questioned why South Africans have labelled Dricus du Plessis 'racist'. Images via X: @dricusduplessis Former Democratic Alliance MP Renaldo Gouws has been criticised after he accused South Africans of mistreating white athletes like Dricus du Plessis. This comes after social media users 'celebrated' the UFC's Middleweight World Champion title loss over the weekend. In a controversial tweet, Renaldo Gouws accused non-white South Africans of discriminating against 'white athletes'. The former DA MP – who was sacked from the party over an old video of him using the K-word – used UFC fighter Dricus du Plessis to back his claims. He posted: 'On Sunday, social media went into overdrive to celebrate the loss of one of our own. I have never seen so many South Africans celebrating a country losing a championship belt. 'Why are white athletes treated like this in South Africa?' In a video posted on YouTube, Renaldo called out X users who labelled Dricus as a 'racist'. 'What evidence is there that Dricus is racist. From his first fight, Dricus has stood up for all South Africans. He proudly waves the flag. 'For some reason, some black South Africans are obsessed with the notion that this guy is a racist because they just like that he is an MMA fighter, that is a champion in the UFC. 'Dricus has not said anything remotely racist in his life. But people are jumping on the bandwagon because he has a white skin, and because they have fallen for fake news about Dricus supporting white genocide. 'Even if Dricus was of the belief that a white genocide is taking place in South Africa, how is that racist? Under Renaldo Gouws's tweet, many social media users responded to his line of questioning about why Dricus has been criticised over his controversial views. Podcaster Penuel Mlotshwa explained: 'South Africans love white athletes, passionately so. But they have issues with people who spread hurtful propaganda. 'Would you treat black athletes badly in South Africa if you had an issue with Siya Kolisi chanting Kill the Boer? Or would I be lying to blanket-paint you with such falseness to push a narrative?! 'Do better. Isolate the issue and don't lie about South Africans and try to ignite racism that isn't there.' Mark Fish. Francois Pienaar. PSDT. Chad le Clos. Neil Tovey. Rassie Erasmus. John Smit. Handré Pollard. Morné Steyn. Faf de are hundreds more. South Africans love White athletes… passionately so. But they have issues with ppl who spread hurtful propaganda.… — Penuel The Black Pen (@GodPenuel) August 19, 2025 Political commentator Keshan Naidoo posted: 'I supported him, but I think we need to be fair regarding those who don't. It's more about politics than him being white. I've never seen such seen such a reaction to any other white athlete. Radio presenter Maxwell Modiba added: 'White athletes are embraced in this country, in the main by black people and various political parties. There is a problem with Dricus in particular. Why are you not addressing WHY black people have a problem with him?' On X, many South Africans have accused Dricus du Plessis of being a 'racist' after he publicly praised US President Donald Trump, who has accused South Africa of promoting a 'white genocide' and 'racially discriminating' against white people. Earlier this year, the 31-year-old said of the controversial president: 'He is amazing, and I've had the privilege of meeting him. 'He said good changes are coming. He's holding many people and countries accountable for everything, and it's amazing to see'. Wearing a slogan T-shirt that said: 'Trump Prefers Champions', Dricus also posted: 'Make RSA Great Again', referring to the president's catchphrase. Dricus du Plessis is unfazed by criticism over Donald Trump support. Images via Instagram: @dricusduplessis Dricus also gave a 'big shout out to fellow South African Elon Musk for also doing the right thing.' The Pretoria-born billionaire has condemned SA for its 'racist laws' after his internet satellite service Starlink was subjected to transformative legislation. Like Trump and Musk, Dricus has often spoken out about his concerns for white South Africans, particularly farmer murders. At his UFC debut in 2020, he told the media of his home country, 'It's unbelievable, people are being murdered daily. Because it's Africa, a lot of the world doesn't see it. Nobody knows what is going on…I want the world to see what is happening in South Africa.' Dricus also infamously criticised South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. Speaking to US interviewer Nina Drama ahead of his UFC title fight last year, the Pretoria MMA fighter accused the government of 'screwing up' the country. He said, 'It's the worst government in the world by a long shot. We are truly and exceptionally s**t…it's the most corrupt in the world.' Of President Cyril Ramaphosa, he added: 'He takes all the money.' Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. "Kaizer Chiefs is a very big team in South Africa and Africa. They have created history today; it's the first team to announce players at the stadium after a win," Vilakazi said The Buccaneers' all-time leading goalscorer added that while Amakhosi's winning form is good for South African football, he remains slightly concerned about their ability to sustain it over the course of the season. "Chiefs are winning, there is nothing wrong with it, it's good for the team spirit and for everyone to come behind the team, especially because of what happened last season. When you see the team win, it gives you hope that everything will be okay," he added. "If they continue with what they are doing over the weekend, they will be surprises". IOL Sport
