‘It's been huge for me:' Local man earns prestigious honor for art
Middletown resident Michael Surber just returned from Italy, where he was recognized as one of 60 artists globally for his talent and contribution to the art world.
'My style is vibrant, colorful and expressive,' he says. 'I find through color that I'm able to say more than I can verbally and express myself better.'
Surber is a marketing representative but at night – he's an artist. He's been balancing the two for years now. His work is much more than meets the eye.
'I'm an abstract artist. I am working fluid paint,' says Surber 'I love vibrant color. The brighter the better for me. They just speak to me differently.'
One canvas at a time, he is showcasing his talents to the world.
'I don't use brushes in any of my paints whatsoever,' he says. 'My paintings are done with palette knives and a paper towel roll, and I just split it, to be whatever it's going to be.'
He showcases his work on social media and at local art galleries. But little did he know his pieces were being considered for international recognition.

'It's a whole judging process that you don't even know is going on because you never applied for it,' he recalls.
In May, Surber was nominated for Art Tour International's Top 60 Master's Award.
Widely recognized as the 'Oscars of the Visual Arts,' the awards honor artists whose work goes beyond technique, championing those who create with meaning, vision, and courage.
He and his oldest son traveled to Ferrara Italy to accept the award.
'I can official say I'm a master artist. It's been huge for me.'
Surber says it's the honor of a lifetime and that he hopes it's a reminder to up and coming artists to never give up on your dreams.
'If you really love it, keep trying,' he says. 'Don't accept no's. I have more rejection letters than I do acceptance letters. Keep pushing the algorithms on social media are not a critic for you and don't let them be. It doesn't matter how many likes you have. If you love it, keep going, keep pushing.'
The Master's Award has opened doors for Surber, and he's in the process of transitioning to art full time.
His next solo exhibit is July 11 in Eaton at Preble Arts Center.

Leanne Morgan is bringing laughs to Netflix once again. The comedian stars in the new trailer for 'Leanne,' a comedy series about a woman navigating the fallout of a 33-year marriage. Netflix ordered 16 episodes of 'Leanne,' which was produced by Chuck Lorre Productions, Inc. in association with Warner Bros. Television. Celia Weston, Blake Clark, Graham Rogers and Hannah Pilkes round out the main cast, with Tim Daly, Jayma Mays, Annie Gonzalez and Blake Gibbons as recurring guests. Nick Bakay and Judi Marmel executive produced the series alongside Morgan, Lorre and McMartin. 'Leanne' releases on Netflix July 31. Nexstar set to stream NASA Live
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — NASA's live programming will begin streaming on Netflix this summer. Viewers will be able to watch rocket launches, spacewalks and views of Earth from space on the streaming platform as part of NASA's efforts to reach a global audience. The partnership comes as there has been a surge in commercial rocket launches led by Elon Musk's Spacex, which has had 81 launches in the first half of 2025. Fast and Furious' Brian O'Conner to return in final film, Vin Diesel says
Brain O'Conner, the cop-turned-outlaw played by the late Paul Walker, will return for the final Fast and Furious movie, franchise star Vin Diesel said Saturday at the Fuel Fast event in Los Angeles. In a short speech that's made the rounds on social media, Diesel said that, when asked by Universal Studios to lock in a release date of April 20, 2027, for the Fast and Furious finale, he responded with three conditions. One was a return to Los Angeles, the second was a return to the street racing that was the focus of the first film. "The third thing was reuniting Dom and Brian O'Conner," Diesel said, referring to his own character Dominic Toretto. "That is what you are going to get in the finale." Walker starred opposite Diesel in the first six Fast and Furious movies before he was killed in a car crash on November 30, 2013. Filming of Furious 7 was already underway at that time, so things were changed to write O'Conner out of the franchise. That included a final scene in which Walker's brother Cody stepped in as O'Conner, with digital effects to make the switch less obvious. Cody Walker stood next to Diesel during the announcement, along with Tyrese Gibson, who plays Roman Pearce in the franchise. Diesel didn't elaborate on how the production team would accomplish his wish list, but digital effects to change an actor's appearance, including superimposing the likenesses of dead actors onto living ones, has only become more common since the release of Furious 7. So it's not difficult to imagine Brian O'Conner making his return this way. The upcoming movie will be the 11th in the main Fast and Furious storyline, not including the 2019 spinoff Hobbs & Shaw. Expected to be Called Fast X Part Two (as it picks up on the storyline from 2023's Fast X) its scheduled release date will be 26 years after the 2001 release of The Fast and the Furious.
