Sardine Run 2025: First fish netted in Port Edward
Port Edward came alive with sardine activity this morning as the first reported shoals were netted and dragged ashore. Although it was a relatively small haul, hopes are that bigger shoals will arrive soon.
Excitement increased when onlookers realised there were sharks thrashing around in the nets. These were safely released by the fishermen.

Social media couldn't resist commenting on circulating videos posted on Facebook.
'Looks more like a Shark Run than a Sardine Run,' quipped one reader. 'More sharks than sardines,' said another.
Others expressed sympathy for the sharks, with calls to free them, and others questioning whether or not this was sustainable or ethical.
Overall, it appears that this was a smallish haul, with the hope that more massive shoals will follow soon.

According to the South Coast Herald, there have been four nets so far, and it's just a matter of time before larger shoals reach the area. The recruitment process ended on 21 May, and the new teachers are expected to start on 2 June. Tanganani Primary is one of two new schools that have tackled severe overcrowding in Diepsloot. Earlier this month, the Department confirmed that 285 learners in the area had yet to attend school in 2025, 206 of them in primary grades. Although Tanganani now offers 18 classrooms, construction on the second school continues, and a third school remains in the planning stages. Still, officials have assured parents that the current facility is secure and ready for learning. Community gathers in spirit for Africa Day
Well-known Mohlakeng pastor Buyi Zulu gave a spiritual, uplifting and motivational sermon at Mohlakeng St Paul's Anglican Church recently to commemorate Mother's Day and Africa Day activities. Pastor Buyi comes from a charismatic Christian background but was previously part of a more mainstream Anglican church that followed the ideals of the late Emeritus Archbishop Desmond Tutu, particularly his all-embracing approach, which promotes tolerance across both Christian and non-Christian faiths. Being Christian does not mean one must detach from their African identity. We must still find our sense of morality and behaviour through our shared humanity,' she said. In her address, she told women that they play an important role. 'God had a purpose when He created women. Creation could not be perfect without a woman. When women have a partnership with God, all will be good, things will happen.' She called on women in all spheres and dimensions, particularly in Mohlakeng, to go on their knees and pray for the youth, the abuse of drugs and recent criminal activities.
