SKM has demanded the immediate arrest of all those responsible for the attack.
It stated that a section of the mob manhandled Rakesh Tikait with the intention of fatally attacking him. The police personnel present failed to prevent the mob attack. It is notable that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath did not condemn the attack on the SKM leader.
"Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait was allegedly heckled by members of right-wing groups in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, on Friday evening when he was about to address a public meeting called in solidarity with victims of the
.
In the melee, Tikait's turban came off, and he was escorted by police personnel and his supporters," said a source.
SKM called upon various sections of the people to expose the actions against farmers, minorities, and the working people. MSID:: 120850073 413 |

#SelfieWithDaughter: 10 years of rural click that appealed to global audience

On June 9, 2015, the world witnessed the birth of the now-iconic hashtag #SelfieWithDaughter. What started as a local initiative in Bibipur village of Jind district of Haryana, soon managed to capture global attention. Aiming to promote gender equality, the campaign raises awareness about ills, including female foeticide. Now, 10 years later, more than 2 lakh social media posts and thousands of news articles now carry a phrase that didn't exist in headlines before 2015. The movement reshaped conversations on gender -- both online and offline, and resonated so strongly that Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised it in his Mann Ki Baat radio address in July 2015. PM Modi applauded Sunil Jaglan, a young sarpanch and the spirit behind #SelfieWithDaughter. During a conversation with HT, Jaglan said that #SelfieWithDaughter is no longer a campaign, but a social movement and a commitment by society. 'So far, we have taken some bold steps as a foundation for the campaign. We introduced 'Lado Panchayat'. The traditional khap panchayats were male-only councils, and for the first time, women were invited to the table, and the council came together to publicly condemn sex-selective abortion — a powerful shift in a deeply patriarchal setting. We also brought up 'women's happiness charts' to monitor the well-being of females in homes, and created 'Balika Sabha' (girls' assemblies) to give young girls a platform to speak, share and be heard,' he said. Under Sunil as sarpanch, a resolution was also passed to ban the use of abusive language against women that was known as 'Gali band ghar'. 'The campaign gained strong community support and had a significant positive impact — for the first time, such incidents were openly discussed in the gram sabha, and those who used abusive language were held accountable. We have touched every perspective,' he added. Jaglan said that families have now started celebrating their daughters, sharing positive stories and images that brought a sense of unity and optimism in a time of crisis. 'Now people are taking this as a commitment and investing in health, education and financial independence of their daughters. Now, people have started making 'period chart' for the women of their families. So far, two lakh plates with daughter's name have been put outside homes. This is the real result and future of #SelfieWithDaughter,' he said. Despite initiatives like #SelfieWithDaughter and 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' -- that also started from Haryana a decade ago -- the sex ratio at birth still remains a challenge in the state. The sex ratio at birth (SRB) is a critical indicator of gender equality. According to the figures from the Civil Registration System (CRS) up to December 2024, Haryana recorded its lowest sex ratio at birth in eight years in 2024 and registered a six-point drop from figures a year ago. The SRB dipped to 910 female births per 1,000 male births in 2024, a six-points drop from 916 in 2023 and the lowest after 2016, when it stood at 900. Government interventions have been undertaken largely—crackdowns on illegal sex determination clinics, strict enforcement of the PCPNDT Act, authorities have this year seized about 8,800 MTP kits and registered over 50 FIRs, including at least 18 against online sellers of the kits, but a lot still needs to be done. Vijender Singh, an assistant professor with the department of sociology, Kurukshetra University, believes that there has been a lot of awareness regarding equality in the society, but what lacks is enough incentivisation to classes other than lower strata. 'Government needs to expand its incentives in the middle and higher section of the society. These sections are aware with the issues and problems arising out of it, but shy away due to lack of incentives that are limited only to those below a certain income level,' he added.

India poised to become 3rd largest manufacturing hub: Union Minister Pralhad Joshi

Dharwad (Karnataka) [India], June 8 (ANI): Union Minister for Consumer Affairs and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi on Sunday expressed strong confidence that India is on track to transform into a global manufacturing hub, citing the country's supportive environment, abundant resources, and dynamic youth. Speaking at the inauguration of the 3rd Greenfield Unit and Sri Rama Temple built by Hodek Vibration Technologies Private Limited in Belur Industrial Area in Dharwad, Joshi highlighted India's unprecedented growth in manufacturing under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership and its emergence as a self-reliant nation across sectors and its potential to become the world's third-largest producer, surpassing challenges faced in 2014. 'India will transform into a global manufacturing hub in the future, as it has a supportive environment, resources and an empowered youth that is required for the manufacturing sector,' the Union Minister stated. 'Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is achieving unprecedented growth in the manufacturing sector today. India today is self-reliant in everything from industry, jobs, education, information technology, transport, and electricity. The import situation that existed in 2014 is no longer there. It is developing as the largest exporting country in the world. Until now, China and Vietnam were the only leading producing countries in the world. Now, India has also joined that list and will emerge as the 3rd largest producer,' he added. Joshi noted the global demand for Indian talent, particularly in Germany, as the country leverages its vibrant youth and resources. 'Today, there is a high demand for Indian youth all over the world, including Germany. Due to the shortage of loyal, educationally qualified employees and technicians, foreign countries are turning to India. India has amazing opportunities in every way, including its vibrant and dynamic youth, resources, and environment, and locals should also take advantage of this,' he stated. Abhijit Khanvilkar, Director of Hodek Vibration Technologies Private Limited, highlighted local opportunities, stating, 'Skilled human resources were available in Dharwad, but not enough job opportunities were available. We initially set up a unit in Dharwad, which has grown to three units, creating job opportunities for up to 500 persons.' Following the inauguration of the greenfield unit, Joshi also inaugurated the Lord Sri Rama Temple there. Earlier, NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam had said that India's manufacturing sector must grow 15 per cent annually to contribute at least 25 per cent to the country's GDP (or USD 7.5 trillion) through Viksit Bharat 2047. According to Joshi, the greenfield unit would help boost industrial growth in the region of North Karnataka and contribute to local employment generation and economic growth. In a post on X, Johsi added that Hodek Vibration Technologies Private Limited was committed to sustainability and has inaugurated a 155 kWp rooftop solar power plant at its Pune unit, aimed at reducing the company's carbon footprint. He noted that the Dharwad unit had also adopted eco-friendly measures. 'Moments from the inauguration of the Lord Sri Ram Temple and its third greenfield unit built by Hodek Vibration Technologies Private Limited at Belur Industrial Area, Dharwad, today. This greenfield unit in Dharwad will boost industrial growth in North Karnataka. It will contribute to local employment generation and economic growth. Hodek Vibration Technologies Private Limited is committed to sustainability and has inaugurated a 155 kWp rooftop solar power plant at its Pune unit. This will promote the use of renewable energy with the aim of reducing the company's carbon footprint. The Dharwad unit has also adopted such eco-friendly measures and has ISO 14001 Environmental Management Certification,' Joshi stated in a post on X. The Union Minister was accompanied by former MLA Amrut Desai, former MLC Nagaraj Chhabbi and Abhijeet Khanwilkar, Director of Hodek Vibration Technologies Private Limited, among others. (ANI)

Union Minister Jitendra Singh reiterates India's commitment to a resilient blue economy

New Delhi [India], June 8 (ANI): Union Minister of Earth Sciences Dr Jitendra Singh, addressing the Monaco Marine Conference on Sunday, reiterated India's commitment to a resilient Blue Economy and pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had spoken about it twice in his two consecutive Independence Day addresses. In a symbolic show of global cooperation for ocean sustainability commemorating the 'World Ocean Day' today, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh and Norway's Minister of International Development, Asmund Grover Aukrust, jointly hosted a high-level event on Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) aboard the historic Norwegian tall ship Statsraad Lehmkuhl at the Port of Hercule in Monaco, according to the Ministry of Earth Sciences. The event was attended by dignitaries, including Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, making it a significant diplomatic engagement spotlighting blue economy collaboration. Speaking at the inaugural session, Jitendra Singh highlighted India's strides in adopting Marine Spatial Planning as a key tool for sustainable ocean governance. 'We believe MSP offers a science-based framework for optimising ocean resources, protecting biodiversity, and ensuring coastal livelihoods,' he said, reiterating India's commitment to a resilient blue economy backed by technology and inclusive decision-making. The India-Norway MSP collaboration, under the Indo-Norwegian Integrated Ocean and Research Initiative, has already yielded visible outcomes. Notably, pilot projects in Puducherry and Lakshadweep have demonstrated the potential of MSP to tackle coastal erosion, manage biodiversity, and engage multiple stakeholders across sectors like fisheries, tourism, and conservation. One of India's most notable achievements, Dr Jitendra Singh said, is the launch of the SAHAV portal - a GIS-based decision support system now recognised as a Digital Public Good, to mark the international ocean day. 'This tool empowers policymakers, researchers, and communities with real-time spatial data, enabling smarter planning and stronger marine resilience,' he noted. The Minister Jitendra Singh added that India aims to scale Marine Spatial Planning across its coastline, reinforcing the nation's global leadership in sustainable ocean management. 'Our science-driven, data-informed approach underscores India's vision for ocean governance that benefits both people and the planet,' he said. The presence of top-level Norwegian leadership underscored the importance both nations place on sustainable maritime cooperation. Bilateral meetings and joint initiatives like this are expected to pave the way for greater global coordination on marine issues, especially as climate change and economic pressures intensify the need for balanced ocean use. 'As India and Norway continue to chart a shared course toward a sustainable maritime future, today's event aboard Statsraad Lehmkuhl served as a fitting reminder: the health of our oceans depends not just on innovation, but on international collaboration' concluded Dr Jitendra Singh.
