Enforcement Directorate raids Congress MLA Sail, Hosapete businessman

Time of India3 days ago
Bengaluru: The
Enforcement Directorate
(ED) on Wednesday raided premises linked to Congress MLA Satish Krishna Sail and others in connection with an alleged illegal iron ore export and money-laundering case.
Sources said searches were conducted at about 15 locations in
Karnataka
, Goa, and Mumbai under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Sail, who represents Karwar in Uttara Kannada district, is accused of exporting illegally mined iron ore seized by forest officials at Belekeri port. The alleged exports caused a loss of around Rs 38 crore to the exchequer, with the actual value estimated in hundreds of crores, they added.
The case originated from a 2010 Karnataka Lokayukta probe that found about eight lakh tonnes of iron ore illegally transported from Ballari to Belekeri port. A special court had earlier convicted Sail in multiple cases, sentencing him to seven years in prison. The Karnataka High Court suspended the sentence last year.

ED teams also raided the residences and offices of Hosapete businessmen Karadapudi Mahesh, alias K Mahesh, and Swastik Nagaraj over their alleged role in illegal ore transportation.
The searches began at 5.30am and continued through the day.
Mahesh, a municipal council member and an associate of former BJP minister Gali Janardhana Reddy, allegedly handled the transportation of ore to ports in Goa, Mangaluru, and Belekeri. The ED has accused Mahesh and his siblings of causing a Rs 104 crore loss to the state exchequer and has earlier attached properties worth Rs 54 crore linked to them.
Nagaraj's residence in Rajiv Nagar and his steel business premises near the APMC were also searched.
The action on Wednesday is part of the larger probe into the Ballari illegal mining scam, which was handed over to the CBI in 2013. The ED is yet to release an official statement.

Cyber criminals target Gujarat temple devotees

AHMEDABAD: On the eve of Janmashtami, a Rs 201 'Makhan mishri offering' scheme in the name of Gujarat's famed Dwarkadhish temple has been exposed as cyber fraud. The fake offer, floated by an outfit called 'Ghar Mandir,' was dismissed by the temple administration, which clarified that official prasad is available only in person or via its authorised website. The con, unmasked just a day before the festivities, revolves around a website called 'Ghar Mandir'. Posing as a divine service, it offers to deliver temple prasad and garlands to devotees' doorsteps for a fixed online fee claiming to mark the 'appearance day of Lord Dwarkadhish.' Behind the pious pitch, however, lurks a calculated ploy to siphon money. The Dwarkadhish Devasthan Management Committee, temple administrator Himanshu Chauhan, and priest representatives have slammed the claims as 'completely misleading.' They emphasised that every offering in the temple is prepared exclusively under priestly supervision in the Bhog Bhandar, first presented to the deity, and then distributed only within the temple premises.
