New guidelines to ensure safety of Riyadh's infrastructure projects

Arab News2 days ago
RIYADH: New guidelines to unify safety standards and ensure residents are not affected by ongoing infrastructure projects in Riyadh are set to come into effect on Thursday.
The Infrastructure Projects Code provides a unified reference with standardized regulatory guidelines for government entities, utility service providers, contractors and consultants.
Fahad Al-Badah, the CEO of the Riyadh Infrastructure Projects Center, told Arab News about the capital's projects in the coming years, with the city hosting major events such as the FIFA World Cup and World Expo.
He said that the volume of investments in infrastructure projects had exceeded SR1 trillion and included more than 1,000 existing and future schemes over the next five years.
He added: 'The code today is in effect the result of an effective partnership between public and private sector workers, asset owners, and contractors.
'More than 100 challenges were addressed within this code to serve as a comprehensive technical reference.'
He said that the code was based on international best practices and standards, taking into account the rapid urban growth in Riyadh.
He added that the capital was witnessing significant growth in the number of projects, and noted that the number of infrastructure licenses had grown by 20 percent annually, reaching more than 150,000 by the end of last year, which was 'a record number.'
He explained that the code included performance indicators to measure goals in terms of the number of licenses, safety rates and spending efficiency.
Al-Badah added: 'The success of any initiative cannot be measured without an approved measurement mechanism.'
The code includes numerous regulations related to safety and barriers, licensing, execution quality, site cleanliness, signage and information boards, dust and waste control, and ensuring accessibility to homes and public facilities.
The code is also designed to improve work quality and compliance levels, enhance on-site conditions, and ensure the safety of residents, pedestrians and workers.
The code mandates that contractors provide safe pedestrian pathways, coordinate traffic movement, secure project sites around the clock, install standardized identification signage, use warning lighting, clean sites daily, and regularly update permits.

UAE-based tech firm makes debut investment in Pakistan's startup ecosystem

KARACHI: A UAE-based technology company has made its first investment in Pakistan, backing a local fintech that provides digital financial services to the logistics sector, the company said on Friday. Yango Group, through its $20 million corporate venture arm Yango Ventures, acquired a stake in Trukkr, a platform that serves Pakistan's $35 billion logistics market. The investment will support Trukkr's expansion, improve its credit-scoring technology and help increase financial access for thousands of unbanked trucking businesses. 'Pakistan's logistics sector is full of potential, and Trukkr is helping move it forward — by giving operators the financial tools they need to scale and succeed,' said Daniil Shuleyko, CEO of Yango Group. 'This is the kind of local innovation we want to help grow, and it's just the start of our work in Pakistan,' he added. Founded in 2019, Trukkr digitizes operations for more than 20,000 drivers and over 100 enterprise clients. Following its acquisition of a non-banking finance company (NBFC) license from Pakistan's Securities and Exchange Commission, Trukkr now offers working capital and fleet financing powered by its proprietary credit engine, Prism. Yango Group operates across over 30 global markets and brings experience in ride-hailing, e-commerce, fintech and AI. Its investment in Trukkr is part of a broader strategy to drive digital transformation in emerging markets, particularly in Middle East, North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. 'In addition to their strategic equity investment, we find that their experience in building state-of-the-art logistics tech will allow us to strengthen our offerings in Pakistan and beyond,' said Sheryar Bawany, CEO of Trukkr.

Riyadh Air Signs Global Distribution Deal with Spain's Amadeus to Fuel Expansion Plans

Riyadh Air, Saudi Arabia's new national carrier and a wholly owned subsidiary of the Public Investment Fund, has signed a global distribution agreement with Spain-based Amadeus, a leading travel technology provider. The strategic move will give the airline access to one of the world's largest networks of travel agents, bolstering its growth strategy and supporting the Kingdom's transformation drive under Vision 2030. According to an Amadeus statement issued Thursday, the partnership will enable Riyadh Air to join the Amadeus Travel Platform, connecting it with travel agents and distributors in over 190 countries. The agreement is aimed at ensuring the airline's offerings reach travelers worldwide, enhancing Saudi Arabia's appeal as a global tourism destination and reinforcing its role as a central hub for aviation and travel. Vincent Coste, Chief Commercial Officer of Riyadh Air, said the company's mission is to build a world-class airline that embodies Saudi Arabia's ambitions. He added that the partnership with Amadeus provides the global reach, distribution strength, and retailing capabilities needed to achieve the airline's goal of serving more than 100 destinations by 2030. 'This collaboration is not only about enabling seamless travel experiences,' Coste said, 'but also about contributing to the broader national vision of diversifying the economy, growing tourism, and enhancing global connectivity.' The agreement also covers the future distribution of Riyadh Air's content through Amadeus' New Distribution Capability (NDC) framework, giving the airline greater ability to offer dynamic, personalized deals to travelers while maintaining stronger control over indirect sales strategies. These advanced capabilities will help Riyadh Air deliver a modern, flexible, customer-focused retail experience. Maher Koubaa, Executive Vice President for Travel and Managing Director for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa at Amadeus, described the deal as a milestone in the development of Saudi Arabia's aviation sector. He said the launch of Riyadh Air marks a significant moment for the Kingdom's aviation industry, and that Amadeus brings not only global reach but also advanced retailing, marketing, and data analytics tools to help the airline compete internationally. Founded in 2023 under the patronage of Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Riyadh Air is a key part of Saudi Arabia's strategy to diversify its economy, invest in tourism and infrastructure, and position the Kingdom as a global aviation hub. Backed by the Public Investment Fund, the carrier is expected to contribute more than $20 billion to Saudi Arabia's non-oil GDP and create over 200,000 direct and indirect jobs in the domestic market.
