Scotland manager voices Lennon Miller hope as overseas move is mooted

Glasgow Times19-05-2025
Miller, who was yesterday named in the 25-man national squad for the friendly internationals against Iceland and Liechtenstein next month, is set to depart Fir Park in the coming weeks.
The 18-year-old, who was last week named SFWA Young Player of the Year, has been tipped to follow his compatriots Che Adams, Josh Doig, Lewis Ferguson, Billy Gilmour, Max Johnston, Scott McKenna and Scott McTominay to a club in a foreign country.
Former St Mirren and Chelsea full-back Clarke is certain the youngster would, like so many of his players in the past few seasons, improve further if he moved to continental Europe.
However, he just wants to see the uncapped kid continue to feature regularly in the seasons ahead.

'I'm not sure what Lennon's plans at,' he said. 'He spoke at the Scottish Football Writers' Association dinner on Sunday night when he picked up his award, which was well deserved, and he wasn't giving too much away.
'Listen, I'm sure they've got offers on the table. I hope that that he, his family and his agent make the right choice for the player, for Lennon.
'But I hope that he goes somewhere he's going to play, where he's going to get minutes and develop in a similar manner to someone like Lewis, for example, who went abroad at the right time and has developed into a really good player.'
Asked if he could see Miller prospering like Ferguson has at Bologna if he was to go abroad, he said, 'Yeah, I could see that. But I can also see he's had a really good season for Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership. He's shown he can play at that level as well.
'So whether he goes abroad, or whether he stays in this country, the most important thing for any young player is minutes on the pitch. And if he can get minutes on the pitch then he will improve.
'Lennon will know if he's ready to go abroad. And his family will know if they're prepared to let him move abroad. Maybe they'll think he's not ready and that will be a factor in the decision. But I think he's a pretty level-headed boy. He's pretty sensible so I'm sure he'll make the right decision.'
(Image: Ewan Bootman - SNS Group) Clarke was delighted to see Ferguson captain Bologna to the Coppa Italia – their first major domestic trophy in 51 years – last week and is optimistic that Gilmour and McTominay can help Napoli to win Serie A on Friday night.
He feels playing abroad has improved his charges as both footballers and people and believes his foreign legion enhance the Scotland squad when they meet up on international duty.
'They just bring a freshness,' he said. 'They learn different ideas and different tactics. Serie A is a very disciplined league. If you watch the games, and I've watched a lot of Serie A this year, it's very tactical.
'It's very demanding and there aren't too many mistakes. You aren't allowed to make big mistakes. Games tend not to be end to end. So the players work with different coaches with different mentalities and they come back with different ideas. Hopefully that will make us better in the future.'

Napoli are one point ahead of Champions League finalists Inter Milan going into their final Serie A game at home to 14th placed Cagliari at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium this Friday night.
Clarke would love to see Gilmour and McTominay become the first Scottish players to become Italian league winners and feels it will help the national team in future if they do.
'I don't want to jinx them by talking about what might happen next weekend,' he said. 'But Scottish people are all of a sudden taking a great interest in Italian football.
'Scott and Billy are fighting for the Scudetto and Lewis has already got a bit of silverware and a nice medal around his neck. Hopefully the boys can finish it off next weekend. They will come into the camp in a really good mood if they do.'
Clarke continued, 'We were obviously really disappointed for Lewis last season when he got such a serious injury. I watched him in the final the other night - and he tried his best to get another serious injury! But he is a warrior. He stuck a couple of plugs up his nose and got on with it.
'He has gone to Italy, his game has improved a lot, when we played away to Greece in March he was excellent in midfield. He is going to be a big part of the Scotland team going forward.'

Dortmund in advanced talks for £40m Chelsea star after Juventus attempted hijack

Borussia Dortmund are in advanced talks to wrap up a permanent transfer deal for Chelsea's Carney Chukwuemeka, according to reports. Chukwuemeka spent time on loan at Dortmund last season and the German club have long been trying to convince Chelsea into allowing the England youth international to join them in a second temporary switch. But the Blues have consistently rejected Dortmund's loan offers and are only willing to offload Chukwuemeka on a permanent basis. It seems a deal is now edging closer with Fabrizio Romano posting on X that Chelsea and Dortmund are finally in 'advanced talks' over a sale. The update comes after the Daily Mail reported that Italian club Juventus had asked Chelsea about Chukwuemeka in an attempt to hijack the move. Metro's weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. The outlet adds that Chelsea are holding out for £40m to sell the 21-year-old midfielder this summer – or at least a figure close to that asking price. Earlier this month, French journalist Sebastien Vidal claimed that Chukwuemeka was 'set to join' Dortmund in a £22m deal – but it looks like he could be sold for a higher amount closer to Chelsea's valuation. Dortmund are also set to bring in a second Chelsea player, Aaron Anselmino, on a loan deal which does not include a buy option. It's believed that Chelsea told Dortmund that they could only get Anselminoif they signed Chukwuemeka permanently instead of a loan deal. Anselmino has 'already said yes' to joining Dortmund on loan as Chelsea and Dortmund continue negotiations on a final price for Chukwuemeka. It is said that Chukwuemeka 'strongly wants' a move to Dortmund, where he would link up with fellow England youth international Jobe Bellingham. Chukwuemeka has made a total of 32 appearances for Chelsea since he joined the Blues from Aston Villa in a £20m deal two years ago. But he was deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge and now seems destined for a switch to the Westfalenstadion. More Trending Along with Juventus, West Ham and Napoli had also been linked with a move for Chukwuemeka before Dortmund entered advanced talks. Dortmund manager Niko Kovac is a huge fan of Chukwuemeka, who made 17 appearances on loan at the Bundesliga side last season. 'The way he takes the ball and carries it, the way he immediately turns in the direction of play, that is really unique,' Kovac said in February. 'He has very good acceleration and technique. The boy will give us joy, if he stays healthy.' Tottenham can immediately get over Eberechi Eze snub by signing 'future of Real Madrid'

Tottenham have reportedly identified Nico Paz, once dubbed "the future of Real Madrid" by former boss Carlo Ancelotti, as an alternative to Eberechi Eze after he snubbed them for Arsenal Tottenham look to have lost out in the race to sign Crystal Palace sensation Eberechi Eze after rivals Arsenal swooped in with a transfer coup. But Spurs ' next target, Como's Nico Paz, was once hailed as "the future of Real Madrid." ‌ Despite Spurs chief Daniel Levy hammering out a £60million proposal for Eze, their north London rivals turned up on Wednesday evening with a £68m package. Thanks to executive vice-chairman Tim Lewis' relationship with Palace's Steve Parish, the Gunners managed to outmanoeuvre their rivals, and Eze has opted for a move to the Emirates. ‌ He hopes to play one final time for Palace in their Conference League play-off against Fredrikstad on Thursday evening, but may be held back due to injury risk. Tottenham must now shift their focus elsewhere, and former Real Madrid star Paz is reportedly on their radar and highly regarded. ‌ Having all but missed out on long-term target Eze, Thomas Frank's Spurs have turned their attention to other attacking midfield targets. They are keen to bolster this area due to injuries to James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, and the departure of Son Heung-min. The Daily Mail suggests that alongside Monaco star Maghnes Akliouche, Como ace Paz is on the club's shortlist. Paz, born in Tenerife, started his career in local academies before moving to Real Madrid's famed La Fabrica in 2016. He started out as a defender but gradually moved further forward into more attacking positions. Following his B-team debut in 2022, Paz was given his first senior opportunity for Los Blancos in the Champions League clash with Braga 12 months later. His maiden league outing followed shortly afterwards. ‌ Alas, facing intense competition for forward positions, he pursued a transfer in August 2024 and joined newly-promoted Serie A outfit Como for a reported £5.1million. He made his debut for the club the following day with immediate impact. Real retain an approximate £10.5m buy-back clause for the youngster, and continue to hold some of his economic rights. The club's former boss Carlo Ancelotti suggested this provision might be triggered down the line while praising the star, which could complicate any potential deal for Spurs. ‌ Speaking to Rai Radio 1 last December, Ancelotti was questioned about Paz and couldn't contain his admiration, declaring: "Paz is a player we follow a lot. He is really good. "He's a great talent. This year of training away from Real is doing him a lot of good. We believe he is a player who can be the future of Real Madrid." Paz earned the Serie A Young Player of the Year award in Italy last season. The 20-year-old then won his first Argentina cap against Bolivia in October 2024 and, after setting up the legendary Lionel Messi, received acclaim once more. ‌ "Nico Paz has an incredible mindset, and that's why he's where he is," Messi declared following the 6-0 triumph. "Nico has a lot of quality and understands the game perfectly. "He has an incredible mindset, and he's with Cesc Fabregas (manager of Como) as coach, who is my friend and will help him grow a lot." What happened to Graham Potter's eight Chelsea transfers including suspended flop with just TWO a success

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) GRAHAM POTTER joined Chelsea in 2023 with a reputation as a progressive, new era of football coach, who created an identity in a Brighton team that previously had none. So naturally, he seemed the right man to give the Boehly-Clearlake era at Stamford Bridge three things: stability, hope, and extremely clever recruitment - staples of what he had delivered at Brighton. 9 Graham Potter made eight signings while Chelsea boss Credit: Reuters 9 Todd Boehly backed the manager with a wad of cash Credit: Getty Under his leadership, the Blues signed EIGHT players in the January transfer window of 2023. And with Chelsea set to face off against their former coach, now in charge of West Ham, on Friday night, SunSport has had a look at what was a disastrous group of signings... The first two players through the door under Potter were Andrey Santos and David Datro Fofana - two young recruits who personify Chelsea's recruitment strategy. Andrey Santos (£13m) went on loan to Strasbourg, establishing himself as one of the most talented young midfielders in Europe. READ MORE IN FOOTBALL SPURRED ON Spurs 'decide to make club record bid for new target after Eze deal hijacked' Now he is set to try and earn his place in Enzo Maresca's starting XI this season with the club already rejecting offers in excess of £40m for his services. Datro Fofana, however, represents the other side of the coin - an £11m signing from Molde FK who was supposedly the 'next Drogba' only to be loaned out to Union Berlin, Burnley, and Goztepe. Chelsea are now seeking a permanent sale for the 22-year-old who played just three games for the Blues. Next through the door was Benoit Badiashile for £35m from Monaco, followed by Joao Felix for a £9.7m loan fee. 9 Andrey Santos is fighting for his place under Enzo Maresca Credit: Alamy 9 Datro Fofana is now playing in the Premier League with Burnley Credit: Getty 9 Joao Felix is in Saudi Arabia with Al-Nassr Credit: AFP BEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERS Badiashile is still viewed as part of the Chelsea project, a tough defender who has had his pathway somewhat blocked by Cobham starlet Levi Colwill. He's made 34 appearances since signing, but may have a chance to prove his worth this season with Colwill injured. Todd Boehly's wife goes viral after awkward exchange with Chelsea owner during Crystal Palace draw Rating Potter's signings Here's how SunSport rates each of the eight transfers.... David Datro Fofana - 2/10 - Cheap fee, went out on loan and failed, now looking for a sale. Andrey Santos - 8/10 - Cheap fee, went out on loan and thrived, now a first team option worth a fortune. Benoit Badiashile - 5/10 - Yet to prove himself, with mixed performances so far, decent depth for Chelsea. Joao Felix (loan) - 2/10 - Signed on loan and underperformed, who knows why he was then re-signed. Mykhailo Mudryk - 1/10 - Cost a fortune before being banned, minimal returns on an expensive investment. Noni Madueke - 6/10 - A solid winger who helped the club progress, sold for a healthy profit to Arsenal. Malo Gusto - 5/10 - A good first season followed by a disappointing second, Chelsea would recoup money spent on him if sold. Enzo Fernandez - 8/10 - A very hefty fee, but Fernandez has been a key player in Chelsea's recent successes, a leader in the team who has improved year-on-year, this should be a huge campaign for him. As for Joao Felix, his signing was a disaster under Potter. But, somehow, Chelsea then decided to make the deal permanent after a mediocre season at Barcelona. He scored four goals in 16 games under Potter, and despite showing flashes of brilliance, fans were left underwhelmed on the whole. Four days later came a big one, Mykhailo Mudryk. The Ukrainian was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal before Chelsea swooped in with a £62m deal agreed with Shakhtar Donetsk, plus a further £27m in bonuses. After an electric debut at Liverpool and some Conference League flashes of greatness, it is impossible to deny that Mudryk's signing was a disaster. The winger is currently facing a four-year ban from football after being charged by the FA over doping, with Chelsea now looking forward with the signing of Jamie Gittens and it looking like Alejandro Garnacho will join too. Noni Madueke was signed next, arguably one of the better bits of business done in this era. He joined from PSV for £30m and after two seasons of improvement in which he contributed to a top four finish and the Conference league win, was sold to Arsenal for a profit. Potter's penultimate signing was Malo Gusto for £31m from Lyon, which represents decent value for the Blues, even though he has had a mixed experience at Chelsea so far. 9 Mykhailo Mudryk is still facing a four-year ban for doping charges Credit: AP 9 Noni Madueke joined Arsenal for £52m this summer Credit: Reuters 9 Enzo Fernandez has probably been the pick of the bunch, but isn't perfect Credit: Getty 9 Chelsea are a better team when Reece James plays instead of him, but, when James was injured, Gusto really stepped up before a disappointing second season. There are questions over how he fits into Maresca's system now. And lastly came the most expensive of the lot - Enzo Fernandez on deadline day - signed for £107m from Benfica. He came with so much hype, off of the back of a World Cup winning season where he had become one of the most hyped young midfielders on the planet. When you're signed for over £100m, generally, you aren't afforded time to 'settle in' to the Premier League, and Fernandez wasn't. He was harshly criticised by Chelsea supporters and wider football fans - but he has somewhat turned it around. His consistency perhaps leaves something to be desired, but he has become a leader under Enzo Maresca and is a crucial part of Chelsea's plan that has so far led them back into the Champions League and to becoming World Champions. Perhaps he was a little expensive, but plenty of fans at Stamford Bridge wouldn't swap him for many other players in world football.
