Student inspires former teacher to adopt two little girls on Valentine's Day
Love was in the air at Duval County Courthouse Friday, and it wasn't just because of Valentine's Day.
It's because of the 17 children dressed in pink and red who have been waiting for this day to finally become official members of their new families.
'Them getting up saying Mom is it Friday yet – Mom is it Friday yet,' Camille Covin said.

Covin, a former teacher, was among those who adopted a child Friday.
She had been a foster parent to two young sisters, Fatima and Melina, for four years, and decided it was time to take the next step.
'Since the day I got them, I have been Mommy ever since,' Covin said.
After being a mother to two grown daughters and grandmother of five boys, Covin never thought she would be raising two little ones again.
That changed in 2021 when a third-grade student inspired her.
'There was a student in my classroom that I was determined to get so that's why I became a foster parent,' she said.

However, after she got her foster license something unexpected happened.
'He moved, and the first two children I got was Melina and Fatima,' Covin explained.
The judge allowed the two girls to slam the gavel Friday, officially making them Covin's daughters.
'It's been a journey, but I would do it all over again.'
She also has a message to that student who moved away.
'Ms. Covin still loves you.'
Currently, there are more than 370 youth in Duval and Nassau counties open to adoption from the foster care system, including more than 100 teens in need of a forever family.

Lutheran Services Florida steps aside from leading Head Start in Duval County amid federal rebid
Big changes are on the horizon for early childhood education in Duval County, as Lutheran Services Florida (LSF) will no longer lead the region's Head Start program. The federal Office of Head Start has notified LSF that it plans to begin negotiations with a different provider for the role. LSF has led the Duval County Head Start program for over a decade, serving between 1,000 and 1,400 children annually with early education, family support, and wraparound services. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< Despite this long-standing presence, LSF officials said the decision to transition program leadership is not due to performance concerns. 'This decision has nothing to do with performance,' said Maria McNair, director of the LSF Head Start program. 'It's part of a standard federal rebid process designed to ensure continued program quality.' The rebid process, required periodically by the federal government, opens up leadership of Head Start programs to new applicants to ensure high standards are being met. McNair says efforts are being made to help staff transition. 'We're trying to ensure that the majority of our employees transition over to the new organization,' she said. Despite losing the lead role for Head Start in Duval, LSF isn't leaving the area. The organization will continue offering Early Head Start services for children under age three, supported by a newly renewed five-year grant. Historic Mayport Lighthouse in plans to be relocated
The Mayport Lighthouse Association (MLA) received an amount of $85,000 in grant money to explore moving the historic St. Johns River Lighthouse. Read: What is 'No Kings Day': 1,800 protests planned around U.S., over 70 in Florida, dozens in Georgia They received $75,000 from the Florida Lighthouse Association and $10,000 from the US Lighthouse Society. The lighthouse is placed on the Naval Station in Mayport. It's currently under dirt and can't be accessed by the public. Invasive tumbleweeds are causing problems in Nassau County: Learn how to combat them
The City of Fernandina Beach and the non-profit group Invader Raiders are teaming up to help combat an invasive plant growing in Nassau County. The Russian Thistle, a spikey tumbleweed commonly shown in depictions of the wild west, has popped up in parts of Florida. Once mature, it often ends up breaking loose and rolling across local beaches, so the goal is to get them while they're young and green. A single plant can produce more than 200,000 seeds, according to the University of Arizona. When they roll, they leave those seeds behind and contribute to an increasing population the following year. The tumbleweeds pose a fire hazard and a threat to both native beach wildlife and people enjoying the beaches. Invader Raiders will host a Russian Thistle training session and plant round-up on Wednesday, June 11th at Fort Clinch State Park. The event will begin at 8:30 A.M. and end around 10 A.M. Volunteers are asked to bring gloves and water with them to the meetup in the East End Parking Lot. The groups are also searching for volunteers to 'adopt' and walk a half mile of the beach twice a month through August or September to help remove the invasive plant.
