Buoyant Afghans plot Australia downfall after dumping out England at Champions Trophy
Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi on Thursday targeted another big scalp in the form of Australia after knocking England out of the Champions Trophy, with a semi-final spot the prize.
The Champions Trophy debutants sent England crashing out of the 50-over tournament with a thrilling eight-run victory in Lahore on Wednesday.
Afghanistan similarly stunned then holders England at the 2023 World Cup in India.
They play world champions Australia at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium on Friday in their final group match and must win to reach the last four of the eight-nation tournament.
'Obviously a win like this boosts every team's confidence and strengthens them,' Shahidi said after Afghanistan sent England packing.
'Our morale has increased even more.'
The skipper added: 'The upcoming match will be crucial for both teams in the race for the semi-finals.
'Australia is a tough and good team. I have said this in previous conferences as well -- that we came here to play good cricket.
'We will try to play a positive game. Just like we defeated England, we hope to beat Australia as well.
'We won't put that pressure on ourselves by thinking too much about the semi-final qualification.'
Rain is forecast in Lahore but even a washout will keep Afghanistan in contention to reach the semi-finals, but they will then have to depend on other results or net run-rate.
Australia beat Ashes rivals England by five wickets in their opening match, then their game with South Africa was washed out without a ball being bowled. Another washout would send the Australians through.
Despite the uncertainty and rain also forcing them to train indoors, Australia batsman Marnus Labuschagne said his side were 'ready to go'.
'I think most of our preparation sort of came before the tournament,' he said.
The Afghans will again enjoy strong support in Lahore but Labuschagne said that will only spur on Steve Smith's team.
'We'd love to win tomorrow and silence the crowd and really put that on,' said Labuschagne.
Zadran sparkles: Afghanistan, a growing force in white-ball cricket, and Australia have played four ODIs previously with the Australians winning all of them.
At the 2023 World Cup, Afghanistan had Australia on the ropes at 91-7 when a cramping Glenn Maxwell hammered an unbeaten 201 to pull off victory in Mumbai.
Afghanistan roared back to beat Australia at last year's T20 World Cup and they reached the semi-finals in a landmark achievement.
The Afghans suffered a 107-run hammering to South Africa in their Champions Trophy opener last week but bounced back to post 325-7 against England.
Ibrahim Zadran smashed 177, the highest individual innings in Champions Trophy history, after Afghanistan chose to bat and were struggling on a precarious 37-3.
In reply, England were all out for 317 to suffer their second straight defeat.
The 23-year-old Zadran, who scored 17 against South Africa, is back in action after a long lay-off following ankle surgery.
'Even though he was away from cricket for six months, it's never easy for a player to return from injury and make such a strong comeback in a high-stakes match,' said Shahidi.
'I am extremely happy for him because he is a very talented and hard-working player.'
'They aren't going to take us lightly', coach Trott: Head Coach Trott lauded Afghanistan's win over England to keep their semifinal hopes alive but wants his team to immediately shift their focus to the Australia showdown, where a win will seal their place in the knockouts.
'I'm going to make sure when they wake up tomorrow, they enjoy tonight, (but) wake up tomorrow ready for Australia. As soon as they wake up tomorrow, the focus is on Australia,' Trott said.

The spectacular drone show that filled the skies above Amman last Thursday evening with messages of love and support for the Jordan national team may have gone, but the excitement of qualifying for a first World Cup still lingers on in this ancient city. Almost all of the billboards – digital and analogue – that frame the winding roads, display images of the team, messages of congratulations from the king or the star player Musa Al Taamari as well as Ali Olwan, the hat-trick hero from that 3-0 win over Oman that sealed the deal in Muscat. On Sunday evening in a busy shisha bar, just a long goal kick from the old Roman theatre, locals were watching Portugal beat Spain on penalties in the final of the Uefa Nations League, but among the smoke there was talk of how Jordan will do next summer in North America. For the fans, the habit of drinking lots of coffee and staying up to watch games past midnight will be a useful one in 2026. The team are also preparing – starting against Iraq on Tuesday evening. A week ago, it promised to be a tense, tight and potentially traumatic winner-takes-all affair, but now it is going to be more of a celebration following Jordan's win over Oman and Iraq's defeat to South Korea. 'We were so happy to be here and have a chance to play against teams like South Korea and their big stars but we showed that we can match them and that we deserve to be here.' said Yousef. 'Now we want more. If we can draw with South Korea in Korea then we can beat Oman in Amman, and then who knows?' A second night of World Cup celebration in Amman in the space of five days would be unprecedented in the city's long history. Confident Smith relishing Lord's reunion
The Home of Cricket is where the heart is for Steve Smith, and the batting great believes Australia's excellent Lord's record puts them in a strong position for the ICC World Test Championship Final 2025. Australia defend their title against South Africa from Wednesday, and they could not have hand-picked a better venue outside of their home country. Traditionally, Australia have always thrived at Lord's. They have won two of their last three Test matches here and were unbeaten between 1934 and 2009 – a run of 18 Tests. Add to that, they have won seven of their last 10 ODIs since 2005. As you would expect for a player with 36 Test centuries and an average of 56.74, Smith has an excellent Lord's record as well. He scored a double-century in an Ashes Test 10 years ago, and 110 in 2023, helping him to 525 runs in total and an average of 58.33. Indeed, he is just 51 runs away from becoming the highest-scoring overseas player in Lord's history – an honour that currently belongs to his countryman Warren Bardsley, who last walked through the Long Room with pads on 99 years ago. So, it is no wonder Smith – relaxed and refreshed after a three-month break from cricket – is in a confident mood. 'We have been training really well, the last week or so,' he said. 'The batters feel like they are in a good place, now we will go out and play. We have very fond memories of the World Test Championship Final from down the road at The Oval. 'Coming here to Lord's, it's a place we have traditionally played good cricket so we are excited about the prospect of facing South Africa here. 'The Dukes ball is a bit different to what we have with our home and away games most of the time, but we are excited about this contest.' Breaking the habit of a lifetime, Smith has downed tools since the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025, where Australia lost in the semi-finals to India. Even in his time off, he normally keeps a bat close at hand so he can practice in the mirror. But this time, he opted for a clean break and peppered his social media channels with updates of his life in New York City with wife Dani. At 36, Smith is refusing to look too far into the future and has previously conceded this may well be his last appearance at Lord's – with Australia not due to play here again until 2027. Still, with four Test hundreds in his last eight innings, he remains one of the best players in the world, and so it is no surprise that, when he picked up a bat again last week, things immediately clicked into place. And it is a good thing it did. South Africa boast one of the best bowling attacks in the world, led by Kagiso Rabada – second in the ICC Men's Test Bowling rankings – and Marco Jansen, and Smith admits he and his fellow batters will be under pressure. 'Us batters have our work cut out,' he said. 'They're a good side, they're here for a reason. South Africa have been a good cricket side for a long time. 'I have had a good break, had a couple of months off, and had a first hit the other day, and it has clicked into place. 'It is a nice place to bat, I have had some success. It takes time to get used to the slope, but you get value for shots, especially hitting down the hill. 'It can be nice to hit on. It can be tricky when it moves around, batting here is about playing what is in front of you. 'Spin will play a big part as the game goes on as well. It is dry, there has not been too much rain, it does look dry, and I think spin will come into it.' Smith has seen it all and won it all too. A world champion in all three formats, he admits Australia's 2023 World Test Championship success ranks as high as any other. 'It was right up there to win it,' he said. 'It was great to win a Test Champ final, and be back here to defend our crown. We have had a good team for four years now and we're desperate to defend it.' ENDS
