Zurhaar fires in North's drought-breaking MCG win
North Melbourne have ended an eight-year drought at the MCG with a tense four-point victory over Richmond, with Cam Zurhaar kicking four goals.
Zurhaar was the most prolific forward on the ground as the Kangaroos hung on for a heart-stopping 12.6 (78) to 11.8 (74) triumph on Sunday.
Tom Lynch cut the margin to six points with his second goal late in the final quarter and the Tigers had two further shots in time-on, but Kane McAuliffe and Tim Taranto fired wide.
Kangaroos defender Toby Pink took a goal-saving mark opposed to Lynch in the final minute to help seal the result.
After close losses to Port Adelaide and Essendon, then a draw with top side Brisbane, North (2-7-1) finally franked their improved form with a win.
It was their first at the home of football following nine straight defeats in a barren run since 2017.
Tristan Xerri won a titanic tussle with Toby Nankervis, both men shouldering a massive burden at ruck contests in a game littered with 137 stoppages.
Xerri had 19 disposals and 52 hit-outs, helping his side to a 54-33 win at clearances.
Luke Davies-Uniacke (27 disposals), Colby McKercher (22) and Jy Simpkin (20) were also important contributors, with Nick Larkey and Jack Darling kicking two goals each.
Taranto (30 touches, 10 clearances) worked tirelessly for Richmond and Seth Campbell kicked three goals, while Kamdyn McIntosh added two.
But there was no fairytale finish for two-time premiership hero McIntosh in his 200th game.
North were top at stoppages in the opening term and Zurhaar contributed two early goals to help his side lead at quarter-time - 6.0 to 2.1 - for the first time this season.
It was the Kangaroos' second-highest first-quarter tally in 46 games under Alastair Clarkson.
But a game-high 24-point lead evaporated as the Tigers turned the tables in congestion and dominated territory in the second term, reaping the benefits of their improved pressure.

Richmond's Hugo Ralphsmith produced a goal-of-the-year contender when he shrugged off Colby McKercher, thought about kicking a banana, looked inside for a better option, then turned towards the boundary and dribbled a right-foot shot through from a tight angle.
McIntosh kicked go-ahead goals for the Tigers at the start of both the third and fourth quarters in a see-sawing contest.
But key forwards Larkey and Darling converted set shots to put the Kangaroos back in front in the last quarter and they held on in the desperate final stages for a morale-boosting win.

Rather than settle for a veteran's minimum contract, for the first time in his career, Harrell tried his luck overseas and boy, he experienced a lot since 2024. He played for three international teams in three different countries. Harrell started his overseas journey in Australia, playing for the Adelaide 36ers, but then changed continents two more times as he played in China with the Xinjiang Flying Tigers and for a month he represented Puerto Rican club, Gigantes de Carolina. Living close to Russia All three countries are very different in every aspect of day-to-day experience, so when we got a chance to interview Harrell, we had to ask him about the differences in those experiences. Interestingly, Harrell says the only culture shock he experienced was in China. Advertisement "China was the only one that made me go, 'Wow, this is kind of where I am.' The language barrier is completely different. The way Chinese people move, look and view life is completely different than being in the United States," Harrell began his answer before continuing. "Their government is completely different over there; it's a whole different way of living. And it's really different when you're not in a city like Beijing or Shanghai; I was in a city that was more out West. That s*it was close to Russia, bro. And everywhere I went, I had to have a translator [program] on my phone so I could translate what they were saying into English." On the other hand, it seems he enjoyed his experience in Australia the most. "Australia is dope. I would probably never go there if it's not for the game of basketball, but then, to be able to go over there and see how people welcomed me. They damn' near look at me like I'm Australian. They speak English and you have a diverse group of people there, so you're learning about different cultures they have. It was dope," Harrell fondly remembered. Driving to games Even though he had only been in Puerto Rico for a month, he liked the experience, too. He even liked that he had to drive to games. Advertisement "It was dope, too; the island is dope. I would probably never go there as well if it wasn't for basketball. It's been a blessing to see these different countries. It was funny because in Australia and China, we flew to places where we played, but in Puerto Rico, you hop in the car and just drive to that sh*t; that sh*t is like an hour away. But it was cool, it was dope, you didn't have to deal with airports," he said with a smile on his face. Harrell continued talking about the passionate Puerto Rican fans he experienced as he also mentioned the recent DeMarcus Cousins incident there. Cousins was ejected from a game after almost getting into a fight with a courtside fan who was provoking him and things escalated as he was leaving the court. Angry Cousins was flipping off the opposing fans, but they responded by throwing things like beer at him. That only pushed him to a deeper rage as he was trying to fight through security and police to get physical with them, but luckily, they were able to restrain him. Advertisement "I'm still shocked with the sh*t that happened with DeMarcus Cousins," Harrell admitted. "That sh*t was wild, but this is how their fans are. They're maybe not as crazy as Euroleague fans, but after seeing that sh*t, I don't know. But it was dope to still have a lane outside the NBA to go to and still see people support the leagues that they have," he concluded. Puerto Rican and Euroleague fans often see cheering for their favorite clubs as a way of life; for them, it's not just something to do after work, and it's not an activity to relax on the weekends. Advertisement It's the best day of their life when their team wins, and it's the worst day ever when they lose as they live vicariously through those clubs. Of course, there are a lot of NBA fans like that, but most of them won't express their happiness or sadness during the game in the way overseas fans do. It's very similar to a European soccer culture, where fans called Ultras sing and cheer throughout the whole game, there is pyro involved, etc... The bad side of it often includes fights between the fans of the rival clubs or, in extreme cases, attacks like the one that happened to Cousins. Luckily, Harrell never experienced something like that happen to him and with him only being 31, he has more than enough time to get back to the NBA and never be in the situation like Cousins was. 'Great pickup': Fans react after Broncos sign forward from Melbourne Storm
Michael Maguire has moved to bolster the Brisbane Broncos' forward depth by signing journeyman forward Ben Talty with immediate effect. Talty has been in the Melbourne Storm system since 2023, plying his trade with the North Sydney Bears in the NSW Cup. The Bears are a feeder team for the Storm, and it saw Talty play in the pre-season comp for Melbourne against the Warriors in February. The 26-year-old scored a try in that game, but has never been handed his first-grade debut in an official NRL game. The Bears announced on Monday that Talty was departing immediately to take up a full-time deal with the Broncos. "The Club confirms the immediate release of Ben Talty who has been offered a full-time contract position with the Brisbane Broncos," a statement said. "Talty came to the Bears in Round 14, 2023 and has been an important part of our NSW Cup team ever since. We wish Ben well in his NRL journey." Talty started at the Newcastle Knights in 2019 before switching to the Bears four years later. He's played in three NRL trial games to go along with 89 career games in reserve grade. How Maguire plans to use Talty at the Broncos remains to be seen. The high-profile club have a severe lack of depth in their forwards, with players like Brendan Piakura, Jordan Riki, Kobe Hetherington, Fletcher Baker and Jaiyden Hunt all coming in for criticism this year. That depth will be tested this weekend against Cronulla, with Maguire having to decide whether State of Origin forwards Payne Haas and Patrick Carrigan back up from Game 2 on Wednesday night.
