France's top diplomat calls for foreign press access to Gaza
He spoke after the AFP news agency warned that the lives of Palestinian freelance journalists it was working with in Gaza were in danger and urged Israel to allow them and their families to leave the occupied coastal territory.
"I ask that the free and independent press be allowed to access Gaza to show what is happening there and to bear witness," Barrot told France Inter radio in an interview from eastern Ukraine.
Asked if France would help AFP stringers leave Gaza, Mr. Barrot said France was "addressing the issue" and hoped to be able to evacuate freelancers working with French journalists "in the coming weeks".
On Monday, an association of journalists at AFP called the Société des Journalistes (Society of Journalists) sounded the alarm, urging "immediate intervention" to help reporters working with the agency in Gaza.
The SDJ cited the example of one such freelancer, a 30-year-old living with his family in Gaza City, who reported on Sunday that his older brother "fell because of hunger".
"We have lost journalists in conflicts, we have had injuries and prisoners in our ranks, but none of us can remember seeing a colleague die of starvation," it said.
AFP management responded in a statement posted on X and Instagram, which said that it shared the anguish about the "dire situation" of colleagues in Gaza.
"Since October 7, Israel has prohibited access to the Gaza Strip for all international journalists. "In this context, the work of our Palestinian freelancers is crucial to inform the world," it said.
"But their lives are in danger, which is why we urge the Israeli authorities to allow their immediate evacuation along with their families."
AFP evacuated its eight staff members and their families from Gaza between January and April 2024.
Mr. Barrot called for an "immediate ceasefire" after Israel on Monday expanded military operations to the central city of Deir el-Balah.
"There is no longer any justification for the Israeli army's military operations in Gaza," he said. "This is an offensive that will exacerbate an already catastrophic situation and cause new forced displacements of populations, which we condemn in the strongest terms."

Microsoft tech is used for targeting Palestinians in Gaza, Satya Nadella met top Israel spy in 2021: Report
For months now, many Microsoft employees have accused the company of working with Israeli military and help it conduct the current offensive in Gaza, but until now there has been no specific proof. Now, there seems to be one, if we believe a report which has been published simultaneously by the Guardian and +972 Magazine. The report, citing a number of sources and documents that the Guardian team has reportedly seen, claims that Microsoft Azure powers a big chunk of Israeli surveillance machine, including in Gaza where it has been used to target report notes that Microsoft's cloud technology, Azure, has allegedly been used by an elite Israeli military intelligence unit – Unit 8200, which is similar to the National Security Agency (NSA) in the US, to build a massive and potentially intrusive system for tracking millions of Palestinian phone calls in Gaza and the West Bank. According to the report, discussions to move this top-secret intelligence to the Azure cloud between Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and the head of Unit 8200, Yossi Sariel, date to 2021 at the very report points to a deep and seemingly controversial partnership between Microsoft and Israel, which is facing charges of genocide not just in public conversation among social media users but also in institutions like International Court of Justice. The report relies largely on leaked Microsoft documents and interviews with 11 sources from Microsoft and Israeli military intelligence and highlights that the tech giant even has an isolated part of its cloud infrastructure solely earmarked for Unit 8200. Microsoft, on its part, acknowledges its Azure partnership with Israeli military but claims that its technology has not been used actively in Gaza offensive to target Palestinians. Earlier in May, the company posted on its blog: 'Based on our review, we have found no evidence that Microsoft's Azure and AI technologies, or any of our other software, have been used to harm people.'Nadella meets top Israeli spyThe most explosive part of the Guardian report is the one where it details Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's meeting with Sariel. The meeting was reportedly to secure Nadella's backing so that Israel could leverage Azure's storage capabilities and computing power, which were then used to build a powerful mass surveillance tool. The surveillance system became operational in 2022, the report says, and it aimed to collect and store recordings of millions of mobile phone calls made daily by Palestinians. The report notes that this data is now stored in Azure servers located in Ireland and has stated that CEO Satya Nadella was unaware of the specific type of data Unit 8200 intended to store on Azure. 'At no time during this engagement has Microsoft been aware of the surveillance of civilians or collection of their cellphone conversations using Microsoft's services, including through the external review it commissioned,' a spokesperson from the company was quoted as saying in the Guardian leaked documents and interviews, however, reveal startling details suggesting Azure might have been central to storing these daily communications and entailing the aftermath that followed. It is also worth noting that while Nadella has shied away from commenting on Israel's offensive in Gaza, even though Microsoft employees have repeatedly brought attention to the topic, he did quickly condemn the October 7 attack that Hamas carried out on Israeli citizens. Tweeting on October 11, 2023, Nadella wrote, 'Heartbroken by the horrific terrorist attacks on Israel and the escalating conflict. My deepest condolences are with all those killed and impacted. Iran Executes Nuclear Scientist Spying For Israel's Mossad
Last Updated: Iran executed nuclear scientist Rouzbeh Vadi for allegedly passing sensitive nuclear information to Israel's Mossad. Vadi confessed to espionage and meeting Mossad agents. Iranian state media confirmed on Thursday that Rouzbeh Vadi, who was executed for allegedly passing sensitive information about Iran's nuclear program to Israel's Mossad intelligence agency, was himself a nuclear scientist. News agency Reuters cited judiciary's news outlet Mizan as saying that Vadi was on Wednesday convicted of espionage after providing Mossad with intelligence on key nuclear sites and individuals, including a nuclear scientist who was killed in Israeli airstrikes in June. The deadly conflict, which lasted 12 days, majorly targeted Iran's senior military leaders, nuclear experts, and critical nuclear facilities, prompting Iran to respond strongly with missile and drone attacks on Israel. Vadi, who held a PhD in nuclear engineering from Amir Kabir University of Technology, was a researcher at Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation—the country's top nuclear authority, news agency Reuters reported. State broadcaster IRIB aired what it claimed was Vadi's confession video. In the video, Vadi accepted that he supplied details about sensitive facilities like the uranium enrichment plants at Fordow and Natanz, as well as operations at the Uranium Conversion Facility (UCF) and the Fuel Manufacturing Plant (FMP). 'The entry and exit of nuclear material into the Uranium Conversion Facility (UCF) and Fuel Manufacturing Plant (FMP) were very important to them," Vadi said while referring to his Mossad contacts. Vadi also admitted to meeting Mossad agents five times in Vienna, where he was allegedly instructed to create a cryptocurrency account for receiving payments. He claimed Mossad promised him a foreign passport in exchange for long-term cooperation. IRIB also shared a screenshot of a research paper Vadi co-authored in 2012 at an Iranian nuclear conference, alongside Ahmad Zolfaqar and Abdolhamid Minouchehr—two nuclear scientists reportedly killed in Israel's June strikes. Executions of Iranians convicted of espionage have significantly risen this year.
