Gig workers with disabilities unable to access lounges

Time of India5 hours ago
Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation has set up lounges with air conditioning, power outlets and toilets in Anna Nagar and T Nagar for gig workers to relax between orders, but the spaces remain inaccessible to people with disabilities (PwDs).
K Sasikumar, a food delivery partner, says being on the road all day on his battery-powered wheelchair is physically exhausting as his app algorithm forces him to travel to faraway locations. "Since I take my wheelchair to faraway locations, using the wheelchair on these roads induces severe body pain. I tried using the lounge once, but there is no way to access it as it's on a pavement with no way to get on it with my wheelchair.
Also, the entrance has an extended door frame that hinders the path. It's nice the govt is coming up with such initiatives, but when they build such structures, they should keep us in mind," he said.
S Namburajan, vice-president of Tamil Nadu Association for the Rights of All Types of Differently Abled and Caregivers (Taratdac), said the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act (RPwD Act), 2016 in India mandates accessibility across various sectors, including physical infrastructure, transportation, information and communication technology (ICT), and public services.

The Act also states that the govt should ensure all public buildings and spaces that are already constructed be made accessible through modifications.
"Despite such an Act in place, policy makers continue to build places that are inaccessible. It needs to be strictly enforced during planning phase."

While GCC plans similar lounges in Thiruvanmiyur, Villivakkam, Royapettah, Mylapore, and Nungambakkam, activists say small retrofittings can make a huge difference. Sathish Kumar, an activist, said a ramp should be made that connects the road to the entrance. "There should be a charging space for wheelchairs and the width of the toilet door should be 3 feet. The toilet also should be accessible and be made spacious according to space available.
"
"We've taken note of the issue and are planning to install a temporary ramp as we work on constructing a permanent one," said GCC commissioner J Kumaragurubaran.

60 rescued in 6 days as kanwariyas test Ganga's depth

Dehradun: Every monsoon, as the Ganga roars through Haridwar, the river draws more than just reverence during Shravan. Kanwariyas throng its banks to collect holy water, but some, swept up in the moment, or perhaps by sheer impulse, end up diving straight into its churning depths. Call it faith, bravado, or sheer daredevilry, but once again this year, scores of pilgrims have had to be fished out by the Uttarakhand State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), whose annual pre-kanwar warning, "Don't jump in if you can't swim", rings out like a ritual chant. But few heed the message. Despite repeated announcements, hazard signs, and police interventions, many still leap in, armed with zero swimming skills, no life jackets, and a misplaced sense of invincibility. In just six days since the yatra began, around 60 kanwariyas have been rescued, one has drowned, and another remains missing. Over the past three years, SDRF has pulled 430 pilgrims from the brink. "It's like clockwork," said one weary SDRF jawan, ankle-deep in the river currents with a rescue rope and the expression of a man who's seen it all before. "We're not rescuing swimmers. We're rescuing floaters with supreme confidence and zero training. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Đây có thể là thời điểm tốt nhất để giao dịch vàng trong 5 năm qua IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo " Gokul, a kanwariya from Haryana, dripping and dazed after being hauled from the river near Har Ki Pauri on Tuesday, declared, "Ganga maa bulati hai" (Mother Ganga calls me). An onlooker, however, clarified that it was actually his friend who dared him to jump for a video. Calling the yatra one of the most challenging operations of the year, SDRF commandant Arpan Yadhuvanshi said about 60 trained personnel have been posted along both riverbanks, as pilgrims are known to leap from anywhere, at any time: day or night. Most rescues happen near Kangra Ghat, Premnagar Ashram, and Har Ki Pauri, zones of "chronic aquatic overenthusiasm," as authorities now wryly put it. SDRF has staged mock drills, stationed speedboats, rafts, and throw bags at key points, and pleaded with devotees to avoid turning devotion into disaster. Still, the same scenes replay every year. Local priest Ujjwal Pandit offered perhaps the most fitting line: "Faith can move mountains. But sometimes, it just jumps into rivers."

Most manjappai vending machines lie idle in Coimbatore

A manjappai vending machine. Photo by P Sreedharan COIMBATORE: Automatic cloth bag vending machines, introduced as part of an eco-friendly initiative under the Meendum Manjappai scheme, are lying idle in Coimbatore. The machines -- each costing approximately Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh -- was installed in 15 locations in the district, according to the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) website. They were installed in places including the district collectorate, Gandhipuram bus stand, R S Puram Uzhavar Sandhai, the flower market on the Mettupalayam Road, Sulur and Pollachi. The machine's capacity ranges from 250 to 500 bags. Most of these machines are now non-functional and abandoned. The machines were installed to promote the use of cloth bags as a replacement for single-use plastic bags by the public. Despite an investment of more than Rs 10 lakh on these machines, public awareness about their existence remains low. As part of the campaign, an app integrated with GIS mapping of these machines was launched for public use. TOI visited the flower market, Gandhipuram bus stand, RS Puram Uzhavar Sandhai and collectorate to check the functional status of these machines. The machine on the collectorate premises had a few bags but was non-functional due to a disconnected electricity supply. The situation at the Gandhipuram bus stand was not different, with the machine showing clear signs of neglect. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo R Gomathi Devi, a commuter at Gandhipuram bus stand, said, "For more than a year, I have rarely seen this machine functioning. I believe many people are unaware of its existence. Regardless of usage, regular maintenance would attract people. Even if the machine is operational, its dusty appearance creates an impression of being defunct." A flower vendor at the bus stand added, "The machine's placement near the bus office is not ideal. It should be installed in areas with high purchasing activity like the Crosscut Road. This would encourage people to choose cloth bags over plastic covers." Responding to these concerns, a TNPCB official said, "While TNPCB handles the installation of machines, their maintenance is the local administration's responsibility. Corporation or panchayat should maintain it. We can inspect the condition based on public complaints, which can also be registered through the app."
