GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Dogs who were rescued from a filthy pickup truck in Walker are ready to be adopted for the holidays, according to the Kent County Animal Shelter.
On social media Tuesday, the shelter posted the photos of nine dogs who it says would 'love to spend their time home this Thanksgiving.' They are just a few of 17 dogs who were rescued from a truck stuffed with animals back in October. After arriving at the Kent County Animal Shelter, one of those dogs gave birth to two puppies, increasing the total to 19 dogs.

'All of these pups are soooo nice, and very ready to leave,' the shelter wrote in the post.
Anyone who wants to meet the dogs are invited to the shelter Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. To see all the dogs up for adoption, visit the Kent County Animal Shelter website.

The dogs were found the evening of Oct. 14 after someone called in a report of 'several' dogs in a pickup truck parked outside a restaurant along Alpine Avenue north of I-96. Responding animal control officers, deputies and Walker police officers found the pickup packed with dogs barking nonstop. A responding deputy said there was a significant amount of feces and no water inside the vehicle.

After being taken to the Kent County Animal Shelter, the dogs underwent necessary evaluations and care, the shelter said. They were a mix of breeds and sizes but mostly middle-aged adults.
The dog owner, Carolyn Newsome, pleaded not guilty to failing to provide 10 or more animals with animal control. It's a felony punishable by up to four years in prison, a $5,000 fine and 500 hours of community service.
With the addition of the 19 dogs, last week the animal shelter said it was caring for 94 dogs. More than 30 were ready for adoption and have been spayed or neutered, heartworm tested and microchipped. Until Dec. 1, the animal shelter is offering a special adoption fee of $50 for all dogs. It includes a Kent County dog license and an extra month of flea/tick and heartworm preventative prescriptions. Bug-eyed telescope ready to find Earth-smashing asteroids

It's only a matter of time before a catastrophically sized asteroid barrels towards Earth again. Until very recently in human history, there was no way of knowing if one was hurtling towards us, much less do anything to alter its path. Now, international space agencies and disaster preparedness experts have powerful tools to keep watch over the skies—and the newest aide just opened its bug-inspired compound 'eye.' According to the European Space Agency, the Flyeye-1 telescope recently completed its 'first light' test at the Italian Space Agency's Space Geodesy Center, located about 160 miles east of Naples. Soon, it and as many as three other similar installations around the world will work in tandem to provide comprehensive, automated surveys of space every night to scan for cosmic threats. 'The earlier we spot potentially hazardous asteroids, the more time we have to assess them and, if necessary, prepare a response,' explains Richard Moissl, Head of ESA's Planetary Defence Office. 'ESA's Flyeye telescopes will be an early-warning system, and their discoveries will be shared with the global planetary defence community.' Similar to an insect's vision (hence its name), Flyeye captures incoming light through its 3.3-foot-wide primary mirror. That light is divided into 16 independent channels, all equipped with their own secondary lens and detector cameras designed to flag extremely faint objects. Flyeye's automated observation schedule is designed to factor in variables such as lunar brightness along with other survey telescopes like NASA's ATLAS, the Zwicky Transient Facility, and the forthcoming Vera Rubin Telescope. So what happens if Flyeye spies a suspicious space rock out there in deep space? The plan is for experts at ESA's Near-Earth Object Coordination Center (NEOCC) to review and verify any potential concerns. If the situation warrants further investigation, the NEOCC will then forward their report to the Minor Planet Center, a global hub for asteroid data. Subsequent research will lead to international contingency planning, which could involve any number of solutions, such as smacking the asteroid off course with a targeted spacecraft launch. Before that can happen, Flyeye needed to demonstrate its up to the task. For its first light test, Flyeye focused on multiple known asteroids, including 2025 KQ. Astronomers discovered the space rock only two days earlier, offering direct proof that the telescope is already capable of rapid follow-up observations. 'These images of the sky above the ancient stone hills of Matera, Italy, are more than just a test—they are proof that Flyeye is ready to begin its mission,' ESA said in its announcement. Flyeye-1 is now on its way for installation on Monte Mulfara in Sicily. If all goes according to plan, the telescope's first sibling will be up and running sometime in 2028.

One of NE Ohio's most notorious killers wants out of prison — again

AKRON, Ohio (WJW) — One of Northeast Ohio's most notorious killers is making a bid to get out of prison, again. Doug Prade, a former Akron police captain convicted of killing his ex-wife, Dr. Margo Prade, will have his first parole hearing Wednesday, June 4. Ground beef sold nationwide possibly contaminated with E. Coli Prade is serving 20 years to life at the Marion Correctional Institution. He was convicted of his-ex-wife's murder in 1998. Last week, Fox 8's Dave Nethers, spoke with one of the Prades' dearest friends. Donzella Anuszkiewicz, who also is a former federal investigator said, 'There's no doubt in my mind that he did it.' Woman dies from brain-eating amoeba in tap water The Prades had divorced, but friends, family, and court testimony show he continued to harass and threaten his ex-wife. 'We were very afraid for Margo,' said Anuszkiewicz. On the day before Thanksgiving 1997, Margo was shot six times inside her minivan parked outside of her Akron medical office. Doug Prade has maintained his innocence and in 2013 his conviction was overturned. Your Ohio electric bills are probably going up in June He was released from prison based on DNA evidence related to a bite mark on Dr. Prade's lab coat. Eighteen months later, he was back behind bars. That evidence was rejected. Wednesday, Prade will go before a parole committee, a small group of parole board members, who will hear his plea for release. Within days, they will make a recommendation to the full board. If they recommend parole, there will be a full hearing with lawyers and victims permitted to speak. Six years ago, when Doug Prade's appeals were rejected by the Ohio Supreme Court, then Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh said the former police captain was right where he belonged. 'It was just a vicious murder and he deserves to serve a very long time in prison,' said Walsh. 'He had been harassing her, He had been illegally wiretapping her phone, threatening her, and assaulting her. She was terrified of him.' Traditionally, the inmate is allowed to have an attorney present at the parole committee hearing, however, only Doug Prade will be permitted to speak. The committee will then make a recommendation to the full parole board in the coming days. If they favor release, they'll hold the larger hearing before making a final decision. Panthers acquire Dolphins CB Jalen Ramsey in hypothetical trade offer from ESPN

Panthers acquire Dolphins CB Jalen Ramsey in hypothetical trade offer from ESPN The Carolina Panthers may have what it takes to reel in one of the biggest fishes on the market. With a few NFL stars still possibly up for grabs, ESPN enlisted the help of four analysts and experts to cook up some spicy hypothetical trade proposals. Among the players included in the simulation was Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who Benjamin Solak connected to the Panthers. Solak offered up a 2026 fourth-round pick from Carolina for Ramsey, and wrote the following: Ramsey is a fan of Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, who coached him in Los Angeles, and the Panthers have a big need at safety opposite new addition Tre'von Moehrig. As 30-year-old Ramsey enters the latter part of his career, safety might be a better position for him. If he has the legs to play corner, starting roles on the outside and in the slot are up for grabs in Carolina. The team made huge additions across its defensive front this offseason but still needs help on the back end. As Solak alluded to, Ramsey recently heaped a bit of praise on Evero, calling him one of the best coaches he's ever been around. The two spent three seasons together with the Los Angeles Rams, when Evero served as the team's safeties coach, secondary coach and defensive passing game coordinator. One of those three seasons ended with a Lombardi Trophy—as Ramsey, Evero and the Rams pulled out a 23-20 win against the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI. Evero would then be hired as the Denver Broncos' defensive coordinator at the start of the next campaign in 2022. But back to the simulation—where ESPN Dolphins beat reporter Marcel Louis-Jacques favored Solak's offer from the Panthers over two from the Rams and one from the Los Angeles Chargers: Considering the Dolphins gave up only a backup tight end (Long) and a third-round pick to acquire Ramsey in the first place, Solak's offer is the closest thing to breaking even in terms of draft capital. An additional fourth-round pick from Carolina gives Miami a whopping seven selections in the first four rounds of the 2026 draft, not including any compensatory picks. Acquiring Ramsey would also entail some number-crunching for the Panthers and Dolphins. Ramsey still has four years remaining on his contract—with cap hits of $16.6 million in 2025, $25 million in 2026, $26.8 million in 2027 and $36.1 million in 2028. So, yeah, adding a three-time first-team All-Pro corner won't be that easy. Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content.
