Modi Arrives In Canada For G-7 Outreach Summit Amid Global Tensions

Hans India8 hours ago

Prime Minister Narendra Modi touched down in Calgary, Canada on Monday, June 16, 2025, for the highly anticipated G-7 Outreach Summit. The gathering has drawn significant international attention due to the ongoing escalation of conflicts involving Israel-Iran tensions and the Russia-Ukraine war.
The summit, set to take place in Kananaskis, Alberta, will bring together world leaders including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy alongside Modi as key invitees to the exclusive forum.
Modi's Canadian visit, following his official engagements in Cyprus, presents a crucial opportunity to mend strained India-Canada relations. The diplomatic relationship had deteriorated significantly under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's leadership, particularly after his September 2023 allegations linking Indian state actors to the killing of pro-Khalistan activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on June 18, 2023.
The new Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has signaled a shift toward diplomatic normalization, emphasizing India's significant global standing and the importance of sustained engagement between the two nations.
This marks Modi's first major multilateral engagement following Operation Sindoor, India's counter-terrorism operation targeting Pakistani-based terrorist infrastructure in May.
Summit Focus Areas and Participants
The G-7 Outreach Summit, scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, will center on three critical themes:
Global Community Protection: Addressing worldwide security challenges and threats
Energy Security and Digital Transformation: Accelerating the transition to sustainable energy and digital infrastructure
Future Partnership Development: Establishing long-term strategic alliances
Beyond Modi and Zelenskyy, Canada has extended invitations to leaders from Australia, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, and South Korea, creating a diverse platform for international dialogue.
Following the conclusion of his Canadian engagements, Modi is scheduled to depart Tuesday evening for Zagreb, Croatia, completing the final leg of his comprehensive three-nation diplomatic tour.
The Prime Minister's packed itinerary reflects India's active engagement in addressing global challenges while simultaneously working to strengthen bilateral relationships across multiple continents.

PM Modi Meets Mark Carney At G7, Calls India-Canada Ties ‘Important In Many Ways'

Last Updated: PM Modi At G7 Summit: PM Modi said, 'India and Canada will make progress in many sectors in the coming times." Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, calling the India-Canada relationship 'important in many ways" and expressing hope for renewed progress in multiple areas of cooperation. 'I am very grateful to you for inviting India to the G7," PM Modi said during the meeting, adding, 'And I am also fortunate that I have got this opportunity to visit Canada once again after 2015 and connect with the people of Canada." He said, 'India and Canada will make progress in many sectors in the coming times." 'India is the world's largest democracy. As G20 chair, India launched several initiatives that benefit the global community. Now, there is a significant opportunity to carry forward the strong foundation we laid in the G20 and translate it into action through the G7. India has always embraced such opportunities for the global good—and will continue to do so in the future," he said. What Mark Carney Said During Meeting With PM Modi 'It's a great honour to host you at the G7," Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told PM Modi, adding, 'Your presence here is a testament to the importance of your country, your leadership, and the shared priorities we aim to address- from energy security and the transition you are helping to lead, to the future of artificial intelligence, the fight against transnational repression, terrorism, and more. It is my great honour to have you here as we work together on these critical global challenges." India-Canada relations plunged to a historic low last year following the killing of pro-Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in 2023. Then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau publicly accused Indian agents of involvement in the killing- claims New Delhi strongly denied, calling them 'absurd" and instead accusing Canada of harboring extremist elements. In the months that followed, both countries expelled diplomats, froze trade negotiations and dramatically scaled down bilateral engagement. Mark Carney Signals Course Correction The diplomatic tone has shifted since April 2025, when economist-turned-politician Mark Carney succeeded Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister and extended the G7 invitation to PM Modi. 'As chair of the G7, it is important to invite the most important countries to talk about issues such as energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals—and India is really at the very centre of global supply chains," Mark Carney had said ahead of the summit. Former U.S. President Donald Trump has launched a fresh attack on French President Emmanuel Macron, saying Macron "always gets it wrong." The statement has sparked renewed speculation about strained ties between the U.S. and France, and the possible impact on Western unity at the G7 table. Mobile App -

India-Canada Ties On Revival Mode? PM Meets Mark Carney: 10 Points

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 meet in Alberta today. Their bilateral meet carries the hope of a reboot in ties since they deteriorated last year under Justin Trudeau. Here are the top 10 points from this big story: PM Modi is in Alberta on the invitation of Prime Minister Mark Carney. India is not a member of G7, but attends the meetings. The invite is seen to have signalled Canada's intent to get ties with India and the ongoing partnerships in multiple arenas back on track. Ottawa's relationship with New Delhi had dropped to an all-time low last year, following the killing of pro-Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023. This is PM Modi's first visit to Canada since. Then Prime Minister Trudeau had pointed fingers at New Delhi, alleging the involvement of Indian agents in the murder. New Delhi had refuted the allegations and accused Justin Trudeau's government of allowing pro-Khalistan groups to operate from Canadian soil. In October. Last year, India recalled its high commissioner and five other diplomats and expelled an equal number of representatives from Canada. Mr Carney, an economist who joined politics recently, succeeded Justin Trudeau in the top job in April. Last week, Mr Carney said India's position as the fifth largest economy and its billion-plus population warranted the invite. "As chair of the G7, it is important to invite the most important countries to talk about issues such as energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and India is really at the very centre of global supply chains," he had told reporters. "As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigor, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the summit," PM Modi had said before leaving for the three-nation tour. The G-7 summit comes amid an escalation in hostilities between Iran and Israel. In a statement, the G7 nations have expressed support for Israel's right to defend itself and condemned Iran.
