'I'm pretty confident we can turn it around'

BBC News11-03-2025

West Ham boss Graham Potter told BBC Sport after Monday night's defeat to Newcastle: "It ebbed and flowed a bit. We had a good start and they came back into it. Then we had some good opportunities. There wasn't much in it. We didn't do enough to win the game but we could have got something out of it."The goal was disappointing, we felt there was a push on Max."It's two hands on the back. It's a push. You can see from Isak's non celebration he thinks it's a push. Clear for us but I'm not VAR."We were playing against a really physical man-to-man defence. The players were doing their best. We'd like things to be more progressive but you have to credit the opposition."It just wasn't our day today. We had some opportunities. We had our moments, we could have been better with the ball."On what has changed since he has come in: "You have to look at what the situation was. We were conceding a lot of goals. We tried to stabilise things. Overall the attitude and commitment was really strong. "We just need to carry on improving our attacking play. It's not easy to do it at mid-season but I'm pretty confident we can turn it around."Did you know? West Ham have failed to win any of the 15 Premier League games this season where they have conceded the first goal (D4 L11).

However, City will be prepared to accept a fee of around £45m for Grealish, 29, who Pep Guardiola axed from his Club World Cup squad. SunSport understands Napoli would prefer to sign Grealish. But they know Garnacho would be a better investment — as he is nine years younger. Napoli would love to reunite Grealish with City legend Kevin De Bruyne, who signed a two-year deal on Thursday to end a trophy-laden ten years at the Etihad. Tottenham and Everton have been linked with a move, while a return to Villa could appeal. However, it is unlikely City would receive a £45m offer from a Premier League club — meaning a loan would be his only option to stay in England. Garnacho would prefer to stay in the Premier League but United's £70m price tag has put off suitors. Chelsea backed off after showing interest back in January. The Argentine winger was left out of Ruben Amorim's starting line-up for the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham and only went on as a late substitute. Boss Amorim then told Garnacho to find a new club this summer. 6 6 Meanwhile, Inter Milan are stepping up their efforts to land United's goal-shy forward Rasmus Hojlund. Inter are interested in taking the 22-year-old to the San Siro on loan next season, with a view to a permanent deal in 2026. United would prefer the cash now as they look to give the manager extra funds to make changes. Former Atalanta forward Hojlund scored just four Prem goals last season — ten in all competitions — and looked short of confidence by the end. Yet his stock remains high in Italy and Inter are looking to take him back to Serie A — although they are reluctant to stump up United's £38m asking price. 6 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW

George Russell hopes Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri ‘keep throwing away points'

Russell won from pole position at the Canadian Grand Prix to claim his first triumph of the year and just the fourth of his career. The British driver has been one of the grid's standout performers this season, and his win in Montreal takes him to 62 points behind championship leader Piastri. Epic. Just epic. — Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team (@MercedesAMGF1) June 15, 2025 Russell is 40 points behind Norris after he failed to score following a collision with McLaren team-mate Piastri. Runner-up Max Verstappen is 43 points off the championship pace. 'I don't know how both Max and I are so close to those two (Norris and Piastri) in the championship because McLaren clearly have the dominant car,' said Russell. 'I cannot imagine they will keep throwing away points in the manner that they are doing but of course we hope that continues to be the case. 'I don't foresee us getting in the championship fight through pure pace as Lando did last year. We will only be there if things like today continue to happen.' As it stands, Russell is out of contract at the end of the season with Mercedes boss Toto Wolff having previously stated he has explored Verstappen's availability. But when asked if his performance here will help him get his next deal with Mercedes over the line, Russell, 27, continued: 'It doesn't hurt at all. 'I am not concerned about next year. I know I am going to be on the grid. I feel I am driving better than ever. I have got more in the tank and I am ready to fight for a world championship. 'I am not talking with anybody else, and any teams that have shown interest I have been quite open to them to say to them that my intention is to stay with Mercedes. 'That has always been clear. I am loyal to Mercedes. They gave me this chance to get into Formula One. And there hasn't been any hard feelings with any of the talks going round, especially around Max because why wouldn't teams be interested in Max? 'If every driver did not have a contract for next year, Max would be the number one of every single team and that is understandable. 'But here are two seats for every race team and I knew if I would continue to perform as I am doing I would not be under threat. I am in a good place and there is in no rush to do contract negotiations.'

Mikel Arteta makes decision on two Arsenal players leaving this summer

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta wants a top quality striker to boost his team's title hopes next season but there are also set to be outgoings before the 2025-26 campaign kicks off Arsenal have no intention of cashing in on Riccardo Calafiori this summer - but they will sanction an exit for Oleksandr Zinchenko with AC Milan courting the former Manchester City star. The Gunners shelled out around €50million (£42m) last summer to bring Calafiori, 23, to The Emirates. After an injury-hit campaign the Italy international was the subject of an enquiry from AC Milan who wanted to bring the former Bologna defender back to Italy. ‌ Milan were rebuffed by Arsenal and Calafiori also wants to stay in London; that is why AC Milan are now pursuing a move for Zinchenko who is allowed to leave this summer. ‌ Zinchenko, 28, has one year left on his current deal and wages are still a sticking point but AC Milan are ready to push to get the deal done. They have also previously been interested in Arsenal's Jakub Kiwior but his impressive end to the campaign may mean the Gunners want him to stay. Injuries and the emergence of Myles Lewis-Skelly at left-back restricted Zinchenko to just 15 Premier League appearances last season, with the Gunners now boasting a wealth of options in the full-back area. That has effectively seen Zinchenko become surplus to requirements and his £200,000-a-week plus wages will also help Arsenal begin a summer reshuffle. They have been linked with Ajax's Jorrel Hato but also want to get some players out to allow them to bring in new squad additions. While a potential move for Hato would further bolster one of the Premier League's leanest defences, Mikel Arteta and Co are focusing on strengthening at the other end of the pitch. ‌ A new No.9 is at the top of Arsenal's summer wishlist with Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko the club's leading targets. Andrea Berta, the Gunners' new sporting director, has held advanced discussions over both players. Ollie Watkins is also still on the club's radar after their failed attempt to land him back in January, with the possibility that a deal could be revisited. Martin Zubimendi and Kepa Arrizabalaga are also targets with Arsenal seeking to add another dimension to their midfield and fresh competition for their No.1 keeper, David Raya, ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.
